고구려 생활문화사 연구론 (Studies of the Goguryeo people's Life and Culture)

There are very little research materials regarding the lives and culture of the Goguryeo people left. Recent archaeological excavations, or written documents,or art historical materials such as tomb murals, are the ones that are left today.
To make matters worse, the majority of research materials collected from recent archaeological excavations is related to history and culture of Shilla, Baekjae and Gaya. So, research materials related to the Goguryeo people's life and culture should be collected, organized and analyzed in a new way, which would help us deal with the various tasks ahead, and also vitalize all the studies of Korean ancient life and culture in general.
One way to enlarge the existing deposit of research materials is to broaden the range of our observation, by using materials related to the life and culture of other countries which shared borders with Goguryeo and therefore came to share a lot of cultural elements with the Goguryeo people as a result of either close contact or long-term socio-cultural exchanges. This has already been done by some researchers, but if done extensively considering either more variables or the connections between already found materials, it may be possible to draw more aspects of the Goguryeo life from them, and also in greater detail.
Widening the time frame is also a useful way to find relevant materials. We can find out how some aspects of the Goguryeo life and culture were passed on to later inhabitants of the same territory, by examining the traditions,concepts, and lifestyles displayed by occupants of the same area in later periods. Also, some traces of Goguryeo can be found through traditions,customs, folk tales and legends in regions where Goguryeo immigrants or refugees settled down, and it may not be impossible to find some surviving elements.
Taking different approaches to analyzing the materials or finding hidden or unused information could also be another way of collecting more sources. In addition, there is a way of retracing the production of a certain source of information, or retracing the spread of a certain source, or even comparing two different sources, for example, sources that are directly related to the Goguryeo life and culture and another source related to completely different society or region. Considering that historical and cultural research materials may have been modified in various fashions, it is also a historian’s responsibility to verify and critically analyze any source.
