초록

This study attempts to discuss artistic similarities between literature and paintings and a closer link between poetry and pictorial images. No one can deny the link, thus this study looks at poetic elements of picture books where words and pictures are co-related. Few studies see the picture books from this point of view.
In order to find the poetic elements of the picture books, Puppy’s Excrements by Kwon Jeong-saeng, Where the Wild Things Are? by Morris Sendak, John Patrick Norman McHennessy, the Boy Who Was Always Late and Come Away From the Water, Shirly by John Burningham, and L’Heure Vide by Anne Herbauts are examined. The picture books are written with a poetic form of implicit connotation. Their written verses have rhymes and rhythms which are made by repetitive words and phrases. They use symbols, images, metaphors, parody and irony which are essential principles of poetry.
This study shows that all the picture books are oriented toward fantastics. It might be coincidental that all the picture books in question have fantastic elements. This illustrates that the characteristics of poetic diction are deviated from everyday use of language using ambiguity, metaphors, symbols, and images. The poetic diction itself may imply fantastics.
