‘안락사’란 무엇인가? (The concept and history of Euthanasia)

The article deals with the important matter between life and death, ‘euthanasia’.
Among lots of issues related to euthanasia, the concept of it will be treated here above all. This problem should play a key functional role in the dispute about euthanasia.
(1) The concept should be taken as the starting point for discussion, so that it must be defined as clear and neutral. But many concepts which have recently appeared under discussion are not enough to meet these requirements.
(2) The main reason for that can have something to do with the lack of the research about grounds of the concept, euthanasia. Here is suggested that a historical consideration can make it possible to define euthanasia, because every concept can be proved as ‘the sediment over a period of years’. Through studying the history of euthanasia has been discovered that the concept of euthanasia covers from suicide to a large-scale massacre. As a result, this article wants to define euthanasia as ‘a good death under diachronic and synchronic circumstances. This concept can fulfill the requirements as mentioned above, in other words, clarity and neutrality.
(3) At last, the classification of euthanasia is examined. The predominant classification today is too complicated to intensify the confusion. Above all, the classic classification between active and passive euthanasia has been created difficulties. Thus it is appropriate to sort into euthanasia after the beginning of death, euthanasia on one’s free will and euthanasia against one’s will.
