제 1장 문제제기

제 1절 연구의 배경

21세기에 접어들면서 산업사회가 지식, 정보화 사회로 발전하고 있으며, 최근에는 지식기반사회라고 이를 정도로 산업전반에 지식의 중요성이 강조되고 있다. 자원기반관점에서 볼 때 기업에게 있어서 재무적, 물리적 자본도 중요하지만, 지적자본이 경쟁우위의 원천으로 작용함으로서 그 중요성과 관심이 점점 증대되고 있다. 조직 또는 조직의 구성원이 지니고 있는 무형의 지적자본은 경쟁자들이 쉽게 모방할 수 없고, 독특한 경쟁력을 제공하고 있기 때문이다. 스킬, 지식, 경험, 전문성 등과 같은 지적자본은 규모가 크고 오래된 대기업보다 중소기업에게 있어서 더욱 중요하게 작용한다. 대기업에 비해 지적자본이 다른 자본에 비해 차지하는 비율이 높기 때문이다.
대기업의 경우 의사결정과정이 복잡하고 타성에 젖어 경직되어 있지만, 중소기업의 경우 의사결정과정이 짧고 유연하며, 조직이 간소하기 때문에 환경변화에 민첩하고 유연하게 대응할 수 있는 등 여러 가지 효율적인 면이 많다. 중소기업의 이점에도 불구하고 다른 경쟁기업들과의 경쟁에서 살아남지 못하고 초기에 실패하는 경우가 빈번하다(Honjo, 2000; Shepherd et al., 2000). 미국의 경우 신생 벤처기업의 실패율이 창업 첫해에 40%이고, 10년 동안 90%에 달한다(Timmons, 1990; Shepherd et al. 2000 재인용). 많은 연구자들은 벤처기업이 초기에 실패하는 이유를 신생기업의 불리함, 규모의 불리함, 경영능력의 불리함 등으로 꼽고 있다(Honjo, 2000; Shepherd et al., 2000). 신생기업은 자금, 시장, 판매력, 인재, 기술개발 능력 등 기업이 생존하기 위해 필요한 자원을 대기업에 비해 충분히 갖추고 있지 않기 때문이다.
