조선시대사 연구와 대외관계 자료 - 조․청관계를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Research History of Joseon - Qing Relations and Historical Material)

초록

본고는 조선시대사 연구 중 대외관계사 연구 현황 및 주요 자료 활용에 대해 살펴본 논문이다. 조선시대 대외관계사는 명․청․일본․여진․유구 등을 중심으로 하며, 몽고나 동남아 등과의 직․간접 교류까지 포괄하고 있다. 최근 2000년대 이후로는 중국과의 교류 증가, 중국의 국제적 위상 제고, 중국 東北工程의 진행, 동아시아 담론의 등장 등으로 인해, 조․청관계 연구에 대한 관심이 크게 높아졌다. 그리고 전통적으로 주목받았던 조․청간 정치외교 분야보다는 문화사적인 대외관계사 연구로의 전환이 두드러지는 경향을 보였다.
조․청관계 연구 주제 중 최근에는 冊封-朝貢 관계에 대한 비판과 대안 모색, 조선중화주의의 성격 논쟁, 연행록 연구 등이 주요 주제로 다루어졌다. 이러한 연구들은 그동안의 주요 담론들을 비판하면서, 새로운 대안을 모색하려는 시도로 나타났다. 책봉-조공관계 연구에서는 책봉국과 조공국 양국의 상호관계를 강조하거나, 책봉－조공관계 하에서 조선이 자국 중심의 질서를 모색하였을 가능성이 조심스레 제시되고 있다. 1980년대 이래 조선 후기를 이해하는 주요 관점이었던 朝鮮中華主義 역시 최근에는 조․명관계의 특수성에서 비롯된 유산이며, 주체적이고 자긍적 중화론이기 보다는 모화적 의리론에 기반을 두었던 것으로 이해하는 논리가 제시되면서 논쟁이 이루어지고 있다. 연행록 연구는 2001년 『연행록전집』 간행을 계기로 활성화되어, 발굴된 연행록에 대한 개별연구나 연구방향의 다양화를 진행시키고 있었다.
한편 조청관계사 연구에서는 다양한 자료의 활용이 있었다. 가장 활용빈도가 높은 자료는 『조선왕조실록』, 『비변사등록』, 『승정원일기』 등 연대기들이지만, 외교문서집록인 『同文彙考』, 각종 연행록, 司譯院 官署志인 『通文館志』 등도 활용빈도가 높은 편이며, 典禮書 및 의례관련 등록, 개인 문집과 漂流記 등도 유용한 자료로 활용되고 있다. 그중 본고에서는 『同文彙考』와 연행록을 중심으로 자료 활용 현황을 살펴보았다. 『同文彙考』는 조선 후기의 종합적 대외관계사 자료집으로서, 주요 외교 사안별 풍부한 사례를 담고 있어서 주목할 만한 자료이다. 지금까지 외교문서의 독해에 어려움이 있어 그 활용도가 높지 않았으나, 장기적인 시각으로 각 사안별 항목들을 분석해야 할 필요가 있음이 확인되었다. 연행록 연구에서는 지금까지 ‘18세기’, ‘3대 연행록’, ‘대청인식’ 중심이었던 연구경향의 극복, 17세기와 19세기 연구, 그룹별․시기별 연구, 학제간 교차 연구나 세계사적 시각에서의 연구, 지속적인 자료 발굴 등이 요구되고 있다.

영어초록

This thesis was examined the current state of studies on Joseon-Qing relations and how much to use major data among the studies of Joseon’s history until now. The International relations of Joseon Dynasty has based on Ming, Qing, Japan, Manchuria, Ryukyu etc, also included the direct and indirect relations with Mongolia, other countries in Southeast-Asia. Recently historians are growing more and more interested in the study on Joseon’s relation with Qing, because of growing mutual exchange with China, rising the international status of China, being proceeded North-east Historical Project of China. This status quo has been occurred since the time of 2000 clearly. Specially Their interests have been growing on the culture relationship more than politic and diplomatic relationship with China.
Lately major subjects to be studied have been handled with critics and findings the alternatives about the tribute system, with disputes on Sinocentrism, with the study of Yeonhaengnok(燕行錄), etc. All the while, these studies was showed that they were trying to find the alternatives, with criticizing their arguments about tribute system. The study on tribute system could be leaded to the possibility that had been finding the ethnocentric order carefully. The study of Yeonhaengnok was activated with publishing the complete works of Yeonhaengnok, was moving to have been diversified the direction to study.
Meanwhile, the study on Joseon-Qing relations was applicated as materials of other studies variously. It was sure that they were making the most use of chronicles which were the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, Records of the Border Defense Council, The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat, etc, were also making use of the collection of diplomatic documents frequently which was Tongmunhwuigo(『同文彙考』), Yeonhaengnoks, Tongmungwanji(『通文館志』), etc. There were also applicated missale(典禮書), books of ritual ceremony and personal collection of (literary) works, etc. Among them, I studied how much the historical material make use of on the focus of Tongmunhwuigo and Yeonhaengnok. Tongmunhwuigo is the collection of material which is a very remarkable material which abundant examples were listed case by case, as the total history book of international diplomatic relation in the late Joseon Dynasty. Until now although there are not good enough making use of application because of some difficulty to read and comprehend diplomatic documents, but I felt a need that we should analyse those historical materials item by item with long-term. Yeonhaengnok also should be overcome a way of studying which has focused on the 18th century, three major Yeonhaengnoks, the knowledge of Joseon-Qing relations, and each of the time history should be studied with group at the 17th century and at the 19th century separately. And they should be studied as an interdisciplinary approach, as a global perspective, sustainable finding the historical data.
