This paper is to analyze the impact of government expenditures on the economic growth empirically through the endogenous economic growth model. If the relative scale of government expenditure passes a ce rtain level, then the economic growth ra te decreases when the portion of financial expenditures increases in the Gross National Product(GNP). This paper tested the hypothesis, and based on th is, the re su lt is: The increment of government expenditures has a negative impact on the economic growth in Korea. This may be because the relative scale of government expenditures is too much compared to the appropriate level, or the efficiency of expenditures is too low. And also, the hypothesis, "The higher the investable expenditure in the government expenditures, the higher the economic growth rate" has different resu lts depending on the period. As an investable government expenditures, the increment of the educational fund has an positive impact on the economic growth during the period of 1957 to 1980,bu t it is s ta tistica lly insignificant from 1981 to 1999. On the other hand, the increment of the portion of the expenditure which is targe ted to the economic development has sta tistica lly significant negative impact on the economic growth. From the policy prospective, this research suggests the following re su lts; The expansion of government expenditures might restrain the economic growth in Korea. Therefore, we should reduce the size of government for increasing the economic growth. In addition to this, we need more efficient distribution of government expenditures. There are many variables which can affect economic growth: therefore, not only government expenditures, but also the others should be considered in the analysis. For the comprehensive understanding of economic growth, we must include all possible variables and develop a more suitable model in future research.
