도시언어에 대하여 (On the City Language)

초록

본고는 언어학적 측면에서 도시 탐색을 시도한 논의이다. 그 결과 도시와 언어와의 관련성에서 도시언어를 ‘도시의 언어’와 ‘도시와 언어’로 나누었다. 이때의 언어는 국어 연구의 주 대상인 지명과 방언이다. 또한 분화되고 변이된 언어와 도시성과의 관련성에서 지명과 방언을 중심으로 도시언어에 대한 접근 정도를 제시하였다. 이를테면, 지명 연구의 경우는 도시와의 관련성을 거의 배제하였다는 것이다. 도시는 지명 연구를 위한 공간 구획의 위치에 있기 때문이다. 반면 방언 연구는 전통적인 지역 방언에서의 도시가 지명 연구의 그것과 다를 바 없지만, 사회 방언(social Dialect)에서는 도시성의 반영 양상을 볼 수 있었다.
미래의 도시는 전통적인 과학 문명의 도시 토대에서 인간적 삶의 가치가 반영된 도시 건설을 요구받고 있다. 즉 탈산업화, 정보화 시대에 대응하여 역사와 문화가 살아 숨 쉬는 공간을 요구받고 있는 것이다. 그러기 위해서 도시는 인문학적 담론을 담고 있는 그릇이어야 한다. 그런 점에서, 로마 도시가 오늘날까지 존재할 수 있었던 것은 이 도시에 인문학적 사고가 반영되어 있기 때문이라는 사실을 되새겨 볼 필요가 있다.
이제까지 국어학 분야에서는 도시언어로서의 지명과 방언에 대해 토착인들의 삶의 숨결과 전통이 스며들어 있고, 역사를 반영한 결정체로 평가하였다. 이에 대한 연구 결과는 해당 지역 언어의 특징을 규명한 것이고, 도시의 언어, 도시와 언어로서의 결과물들이다.
그런데 해당 지역의 무엇이 지명이나 방언에 반영되었는가에 대해서는 구체적이지 않다. 주로 언어적인 측면만 다루었지, 해당 지역의 인문학적 특징은 배제되었다. 도시에 대한 탐색과 도시에 대한 인식이 미미하였음을 보여 주는 부분이다. 도시와 우리 삶의 관계를 고려할 때, 이제 도시에 대한 새로운 이해와 관심이 요구된다고 할 수 있다. 역사학이나 문학에서뿐만 아니라 언어를 통해서도 ‘도시’의 도시적 성격을 분석해 내어야 할 것이기 때문이다.
또한 도시를 바라보는 시각이 넓어져야 한다. 과거에 형성된 서울시와 언어, 근래에 형성된 구미시와 언어, 미래에 형성될 세종시와 언어의 관계 등을 공시적으로, 통시적으로 바라볼 필요가 있다. 도시는 정적인 상태보다 항상 새로운 환경에 적응하려 하고, 그 상황에 맞춰 변화하는, 동적인 개념으로 볼 수 있기 때문이다.
나아가 도시학과 국어학의 융합적인 연구도 필요하다. 도시언어의 형성 요인을 규명하고, 도시언어의 분화 및 변이에 관여하는 언어 내․외적 요인들에 대한 연구가 이루어져야 하기 때문이다.
그리고 국어(지명과 방언)을 바라보는 시각도 변해야 한다. 국어는 더 이상 언어 로만 존재하지 않는다. 국어는 한국문화에 있어 많은 수의 부분집합이다. 따라서 국어의 내적 구조에 대한 탐색이 지속적으로 이루어져야 하지만, 다른 한편 국어와 관련될 수 있는 것에 대한 외연의 확대도 요구되고 있다. 도시화에 의한 도시가 우리 삶의 새로운 터전으로 확장되고 있음에서 도시 형성에 담겨 있는 언어학적 담론을 발견하는 것이 필요한 시기이다.

영어초록

This article is a discussion of city exploration from a linguistic point ofview. As a result, city language was divided as ‘Language of City’ and‘City and Language’ in connection between city and language. Thelanguage in this time indicates place names and dialects as main subjects inthe study of korean language. Also, it suggested degree of approach for citylanguage focused on place names and dialects in connection betweenspecialized and transformed language and urbanism. For example,connection of city was rarely included in the case of place names. It isbecause city is located in space division for a study on place names. City indialects research is not different from that of place names research intraditional regional dialects, however, aspect of reflection on urbanism canbe seen in social dialects.
City in the future is demanded city construction reflected by value ofhumane life on the basis of city of traditional science civilization. Thus,space where culture and history are lived is being requested in response toinformation age and deindustrialisation. To deal with this, city shouldbecome a plate where discourses of the humanities are contained. In thispoint, it is necessary to look back the fact that city of Rome still exists because thoughts of the humanities are reflected.
Until now, place names and dialects as the city language have beenevaluated as the result that was reflected on history and imprinted breathand tradition of native life in the field of Korean linguistics. As a result ofthis study, it is what distinct features of language in affected region areestablished, and it is the results as Language of City and City andLanguage.
However, what place names or dialects of the region have been reflectedis not specified. It is only mainly dealt with the aspect of language, butdistinct features of the humanities in the region are excluded. It is the partshowing that exploration for city and recognition of city are insufficient.
Given the consideration of relation between city and our life, it can be saidthat now new understanding about city and interests in city are demanded.
It is because urban characteristics of ‘city’ needs to be analysed throughhistorical studies and literature as well as languages.
Plus, the viewpoint of seeing city should be widened. Relations betweenSeoul City and language formed in the past, Gumi City and languageshaped recently, and Sejong City and languages which will be built in thefuture need to be observed synchronically and diachronically. City isalways more likely to be adapted in new environment than silencecondition, and city can be defined as dynamic conception as it istransformed under that circumstance.
Furthermore, integrated studies of urbanology and korean languages arenecessary since formation factors of city language are defined, and study oninternal․external language factors related to differentiation andtransformation of city language should be arranged.
View point of seeing korean language (place names and dialects) shouldbe also changed. Korean language no longer exists as only a language. Korean language can be described a subset of lots of number in koreanculture. Therefore, exploration about internal structure of korean languageshould be done constantly, but expansion of denotation regarding whatkorean language can be related to is also required. As city by urbanizationis extended into new base of our life, it is the time for discovering linguisticdiscourses which reflect city formation.
