초록

본 논문은 지난 150년간 서구에서 불교가 수용되어 온 과정과 그 문명사적 의의, 불교 수용이 서구 사회에 가져온 영향과 반대로 불교가 서구에 수용됨으로써 불교가 변화되고 변용되는 양태를 밝힌다. 특히 서구 불교 수용과 변용의 극단적인 예를 보이는 미국 불교에 대해 그 사상적 문화적 정체성을 분석한다. 19세기 아시아의 이국적인 종교 사상과 교의에 대한 지적 관념적 호기심에서 시작된 서구에서의 불교에 대한 관심은, 20세기 전쟁과 산업화 과정을 통해 서구 사회가 실존적 사회적 위기를 경험하면서 촉발되었다. 스즈키 다이세츠나 앨런 왓츠 등의 강연과 저술을 통해 선불교가 소개되어, 지식인 뿐 만 아니라 대중 전반에서 동양 사상, 문화, 신비주의 등에 대한 관심이 증폭되었고 불교는 대안적 가치와 삶의 방식으로서 수용되었다.
역사적으로 또한 종교 현상적으로 복잡하고 다양한 형태를 띠지만 미국 불교는 동화와 적응의 단계를 넘어서 자신 만의 독특한 문화적 사상적 정체성을 발전시켜 나가고 있으며 앞으로도 그러한 과정은 지속될 전망이다. 미국 불교는 짧은 역사 속에서 괄목할 만한 성장을 보였고 불교 교리를 새로운시각에서 수용, 해석하고 자신의 삶과 사회 현실에 적극적으로 적용하고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다.

영어초록

The widespread proliferation of Buddhism in American has garnered a great deal of recent attention from scholars. In its almost 150 year history, Buddhism in the West has developed a unique identity that emerged from the particular influences and challenges upon it by the societies into which it was introduced. This paper begins by addressing how Buddhism was introduced to and accepted by the West via the experiences of travelers and Christian missionaries in the nineteenth century, analyzes the impact that Buddhism has since had on the western intellectual world, and evaluates its meaning and significance in terms of its relative social and cultural contexts. Most recently, the past 50 years have seen Buddhism in America developing into a complex and diverse social phenomena, with the accepted individuated title of American Buddhism. The constituents of American Buddhism are diverse but can be broadly classified into two groups, namely communities comprised primarily of Asian Buddhist immigrants or their descendants on the one hand, and on the other groups of mostly white middle-class students who continue to organize around missionary teachers from Asia.
In spite of its origins in a plurality of traditions, American Buddhism has experienced a synthetic transformation of its disparate sources and developed its own unique religious culture, distinct from the ethnic Buddhist traditions that it originated from. A few key characteristics are most identifiable: lay Buddhist practice, value emphasis on family and women, and moral and social concerns that have developed into a cohesive movement now labeled "engaged Buddhism". Certain characteristics of engaged Buddhism, such as the opposition to the use of violence and advocacy of peaceful solutions based upon tolerance and mutual respect for environmental, economic,and social justice, are now gaining recognition as a legitimate blend of American Buddhism. Much as it was perceived at its inception as providing answers to the social and existential concerns that society was facing, Buddhism today continues to be examined and considered in regard to the modern complexities of present day societies. Although it is not clear where the path of Western Buddhism will lead in the future, the interesting history of its development provides a fresh perspective in understanding the reciprocal flowing of civilizations through such conduits as acceptance, response, and transformation, to influence contemporary Buddhist practice in the East – including Korea.
