연구개발비와 기업가치의 관련성 (Research and Development Expenditure and Firm Value)

초록

[연구목적]본 연구는 재무제표 중 주석을 통해 보고한 기업의 연구개발비의 자산화 여부에 따른 기업가치에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 연구개발비의 자산 인식 여부에 따라 기업가치에 차별적인지 아니면 연구개발에 대한 투자가 기업가치에 긍정적인지 분석하였다.
[연구방법]이를 위해 2009년부터 2022년까지 KOSPI와 KOSDAQ 시장에 상장된 1,315개를 대상으로 자산으로 인식한 연구개발비와 비용으로 인식한 연구개발비의 비중이 Tobin’s Q로 측정한 기업가치에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다.
[연구결과]기업가치에 미치는 일정한 변수를 통제하고도, 당기의 연구개발비 지출(총액)은 기업가치에 긍정적인 것으로 나타났다. 이를 세분화한 결과에서는 자산처리 된 연구개발비는 기업가치와 관련성을 찾을 수 없었으나, 비용처리 된 연구개발비는 기업가치와 양의 관련성이 있었다. 이러한 결과는 외국인 지분이 클수록 뚜렷하였으며, 차기(t＋1)와 차차기(t＋2)의 기업가치와도 양(＋)의 관련성이 유지되었다.
[연구의 시사점]본 연구는 연구개발비의 재무제표 인식 방식에 따라 기업가치에 미치는 영향이 차별적임을 확인한 동시에 연구개발에 대한 투자는 기업가치의 단기적, 장기적 측면에서 모두 긍정적임을 실증적으로 확인하였다. 연구개발에 대한 투자가 산업의 변화에 따라 꾸준히 이어지는 가운데, 본 연구는 자본시장 참여자와 기업 모두에게 시사점을 제공한다.

영어초록

[Purpose]We examined the impact on firm value depending on whether a company’s research and development expenses were capitalized as reported through notes in the financial statements. We analyzed whether research and development costs are recognized as assets is positive for firm value or not.
[Methodology]We use 1,315 firms listed on the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets from 2009 to 2022 and examined the impact of the proportion of research and development costs recognized as assets and research and development costs recognized as expenses on firm value measured by Tobin’s Q.
[Findings]Even after controlling for certain variables that affect firm value, we find that the current year’s research and development expenditures (total amount) is positive for firm value. In the results of this breakdown, no relationship was found between research and development costs treated as assets and firm value, but research and development costs treated as expenses were positively related to firm value. These results were more evident as foreign ownership increased, and the positive relationship was maintained with the firm value of the next (t＋1) and next (t＋2) periods.
[Implications]This study confirmed that the impact on firm value is differentiated depending on the financial statement recognition method of research and development expenses, and at the same time empirically confirmed that investment in research and development is positive in both the short－term and long－term aspects of firm value. As investments in research and development continue to increased over inndustries, this study provides implications for both capital market participants and companies.
