대학의 여성주의 교육과 남학생들의 저항 (Women's Studies at Universities and Male Students’ Resistance)

초록

대학교 여성주의 강좌에서 남학생과 여학생은 성 정체성에 따라 여성주의에 대한 공감과 이해가 다르다. 일반화는 어렵지만 여학생은 남학생에 비해 여성주의에대한 민감성이 높은 편이라고 할 수 있다. 이 글은 대학생들의 여성주의에 대한이해를 바탕으로 어떤 여성주의 교수의 전략을 통해 여성주의 강좌를 수강하는 남학생의 저항을 줄일 수 있는가를 살펴본다. 이를 위해 문헌자료, 강좌에서 학생들의 토론, 에세이, 영화 비평 등을 분석하였다.
남학생들의 저항은 세 유형으로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 여성주의에 반감을 분명하게 드러내는 경우, 둘째, 남성 중심적 사고를 노골적으로 드러내지 않지만 그렇다고 여성주의를 지지하지도 않는 경우이다. 이는 가장 대중적인 반응이며 분석과 성찰의 어려움과 함께 양성 평등, 차이의 인정과 같은 규범적 수위를 강조하는도덕적 환원(moral reductionism)을 보인다. 셋째, 계몽된 남성들로서 여성주의를 지지하지만 자신의 자연화된 특권을 교정하려는 노동은 하지 않은 경우이다.
이 글은 이러한 저항을 줄이기 위한 전략으로서 여성에게 가해지는 억압을 강조하면서 공감을 의도하는 대중적인 방법은 한계가 있다고 본다. 그러한 전략은사회적 약자로서의 여성의 역할을 재생산하고 피억압자의 인식론적 특권 때문에공감 또한 그렇게 수월하게 실천되는 것이 아니기 때문이다.
필자는 학생들 자신의 생활과 삶이 어떻게 복잡한 수위의 가부장제와 얽혀있는 지를 파악하는 것이 중요하다고 보는데, 학생들은 성역할의 강제라는 가부장제의가장 기본적인 특징을 잘 파악하고 있다. 그런데 남성에게 강제되는 불편함을 가부장제로 집약하지 못하고, 남성으로서 물리적·심리적 특권의 현실에 대한 검토보다는 역차별 문제로 다시 한 번 성별 대립, 혹은 여성에 대한 비판으로 환원하는경향이 많다. 대개 가부장제가 남성=가해자, 여성=피해자라는 도식으로 이해되고 있기 때문이다.
이를 해결하기 위한 한 방법으로서 가부장제가 남녀 문제 이상의 권력 관계의장이라는 이해, 동성 간에 발생하는 권력 위계 문제, 심리적 테러, 여성의 가부장적 성역할의 내면화, 가부장제가 남성에게 가하는 불편함과 장기적 · 구조적 특권등의 다층적 현실을 살펴보아야 한다고 주장한다. 대학의 여성주의 강좌로 학생들의 의식의 변화나 생활의 실천을 기대하는 것은 무리인데, 다만 교수자로서 남성페미니스트의 가능성을 원천적으로 회의하기보다 최소한의 범위에서 성찰의 장을제공하고 여성주의 분석의 초점을 명확하게 제시하는 것이 중요하다고 본다.

영어초록

Due to the difference in gender identity, the level of understanding andreceptiveness to feminism in feminist courses at universities differs significantlybetween male and female students. Although generalization is difficult, it wouldbe safe to say that female students, as compared to their male counterparts, aremuch more receptive and favorable to feminism. The purpose of this paper is toexplore how approaches and strategies in feminist pedagogy could be applied incollege settings to address and reduce male students’ resistance toward feminism.
In order to do so, this paper analyzes various academic literature as well asstudents’ lecture discussions, essays, and movie reviews in relation to feminism.
The resistance held by male college students toward feminism can becategorized into three distinct types. The first type shows no hesitance indemonstrating his antagonism toward feminism. The second type neither assertshis patriarchal notions nor displays any support to feminism. This type is mostcommonly displayed by male students and such phenomenon could be explainedby ‘moral reductionism’ in which they face difficulties in analyzing and reflectingon their lives in a patriarchal society, while employing normative statements suchas gender equality, recognition of difference, and women’s rights. The third typeis so-called enlightened and therefore supports feminism; however, he does notgo to the extent of relinquishing his power and privileges in a patriarchal society.
In the attempt to reduce male students’ resistance, I pinpoint thelimitations of focusing on both women’s oppression and the strategy ofcompassion. By focusing on these two matters, it will only reproducestereotypical sex role. Besides, compassion is not easy to practice as it ought todue to the epistemological privilege of the oppressed.
I demonstrate the importance of providing a space where male studentscould reflect on their own daily lives in relation to the existing societalcomplexities of the patriarchal system. Interestingly enough, both male andfemale college students are aware of the fundamental features of patriarchalsystem or enforced sex role. However male students have difficulties explainingthe relationship of enforced masculinity to patriarchy. Moreover, instead ofacknowledging the exhaustive list of their privileges, they tend to revert back tothe question of reverse discrimination, or pinpoint women’s internalization ofpatriarchy. It is manly because patriarchy is considered as the notion of ‘men asoppressors, women as victims.’To solve this problem, I demonstrate the need to examine themultifaceted realities of patriarchy such as problems of power relations withinsame sex, psychological terror, women’s internalization of patriarchal sex role,and males as victims and their institutional privilege. Although it is almostimpossible to expect male students who have attended women’s studies practicefeminism on a regular basis, it is necessary for feminist lecturers to accuratelypresent the focal point of feminism, and to provide ample opportunities forthem to analyze and reflect on their lives in relation to the existing patriarchalsystem.
