초록

The purposes of this research is to implement the theory and framework behind the ‘Regional Industrial Eco-system (RIES)’ case-study as pertaining to the industrial sewing district of downtown Seoul. Also this research will investigate the effects and explore the influence pertaining to the regeneration of this area based on different characteristics of the actors involved in the sewing industry. RIES Case study’s results are as follows. Firstly, as the historical background, In 1990’s as Rent of Dongdaemun shopping centers increased, almost manufacturers moved to residential area near by where Skilled labors were fluent and role of manufacturers have were seperated. Secondly as the characteristics of the actors involved in production, There are about 1,205 firms in the design business in Dongdaemun which consist of 142 manufacturers and 960 subcontractors. These firms have significant differences due to their main functions, location, size, and facility rent costs.
Manufacturers can execute samples, patterns, and provide cutting and sewing. Thirdly as value chains and networks, This aspect only pertains to manufacturing and an advantage of this single focus is its ability to provide speedy and low priced manufacturing. To achieve this, value chains are skipped and some manufacturing steps are merged. The results of the empirical analysis on effect of urban regeneration methods by the characteristics of actors are as follows. Firstly, manufacturers consider speedy production and a wide range of products to be an advantage while disadvantages include lack of labor, but Subcontractors consider an advantage to be market proximity and disadvantages to be lack of and uncertainty of works. It can be concluded that subcontractors are more dependent on networks and external economy of agglomeration than manufacturers. Also, manufacturers are more probable to improve industrial structures and improve their environment, Subcontractors are more likely to focus on improvement of industrial structure than manufacturers. It is commonly concluded that manufacturers prefer to focus on facilitating design and whole-sale parts and also on solving lack of labor issue, Contrarily, subcontractors and workers prefer to establish networks inside and outside to ensure employment. Manufacturers are especially interested in the shared brand development and sale shops to improve income, Subcontractors are interested in information and employment through network building. In conclusion, manufacturers want a new labor force and technical training as well as an improved working environment, Subcontractors want a stable employment and high unit costs through building networks inside and outside.
