초록

본 연구에서는 한국교육개발원의 ｢한국교육종단조사2013｣의 1차년도 데이터를 사용하여 초등학교
5학년 국어, 영어, 수학과의 학업성취도와 학업성취수준 향상에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대해서 살펴보
았다. 개인·가정배경, 학교배경 및 여건, 학생과정, 학교교육활동의 제반 요인을 통제한 후 여학생이
남학생보다 국어과와 영어과의 학업성취도가 높고, 학업성취수준 향상 가능성이 더 높았다. 가정배경
중 부모의 사회·경제적 배경은 학업성취도에 강력한 영향을 미치며, 모든 교과의 기초수준 이상에서
상위수준에 도달하는데 영향을 주었다. 부모의 교육기대수준과 부모의 가치관도 교과별로 다르지만
대체로 보통수준과 우수수준이 될 가능성에 영향을 주었다. 학교 배경 및 여건 중 학교평균 사회·경
제적 지위는 학업성취도와 성취수준 향상에 가장 큰 영향을 미쳤으며, 교과별로 차이가 있으나 보통
수준 이상에 도달하는데 영향을 주었다. 도시규모, 설립유형과 교원 1인당 학생 수는 학생의 학업성취
도와 학업성취수준 향상에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 독서향유정도는 성취도와 보통수준 또는 우수수준
이 될 가능성에 영향을 주며, 창의적 사고능력은 세 교과 성취도에 정적 관련성을 보이고, 성취수준별
로는 보통수준이나 우수수준이 될 가능성을 크게 하였다. 시험스트레스와 외적조절동기는 국어, 수학
과의 성취도와 성취수준 향상에 부적 관련성을 보였다. 교우관계가 좋거나 규칙을 잘 준수한다고 해
서 성취도가 좋은 것은 아니었으나 일부 교과 기초미달 학생에게는 도움이 되었다. 수학성취도는 스
스로 공부하는 시간과 정적 관련성을 보이며, 우수수준이 될 가능성이 높으나 국어과와 영어과의 경
우는 부적 관련성을 보였다. 수업태도는 국어, 영어, 수학성취도와 정적 관련성을 보이고 성취수준별
로는 보통수준이나 우수수준이 될 가능성을 더 크게 하였다. 영어과 선행학습은 학업성취도와 성취수
준 향상에 정적 관련성을 보이고, 사교육 참여는 영어·수학성취도와 성취수준 향상에 정적인 관련이
있었다. 방과후학교 참여 여부는 수학과의 경우 부적 관련이 있었다. 학교교육활동인 수업분위기, 성
취압력, 교사열의, 학생과의 수업상호작용, 학교 내 폭력 정도는 성취도에 영향을 미치지 않고, 성취수
준 향상에는 영어와 수학과 일부 서로 다른 수준에서 영향을 미치고 있었다. 연구결과에 기초하여 정
책적 시사점이 제시되었다.

영어초록

This study examined student and school variables that would affect academic achievement and
improvement of academic achievement level among elementary school students in their 5th grade
based on the first year data 『Korean Education Longitudinal Study 2013』. With other factors of
school education such as personal/family background, school background and condition, student
process and school educational activities, under control, the academic achievement of female
students was higher than that of male students in Korean and English subjects. In addition, the
former turned out to have higher possibility in terms of improvement of academic achievement
level. Among family background factors, social and economic backgrounds turned out to cause the
most significant effect on academic achievement, especially in reaching a higher level from the
basic level in every subject. While the power of influence of the parents' expectations and values
of education were different depending on subjects, it turned out that generally, their expectations
would affect the possibility for students to reach the proficient and advanced levels. As for school
backgrounds and conditions, a school's social and economic status would be the most influential
to academic achievement and improvement of academic achievement level. In particular, this factor
turned out to affect the possibility of reaching the basic level although there might be difference
depending on the subjects. The extent of reading enjoyment would affect the possibility of
reaching the proficient or advanced level as well as the academic achievement while stress of
tests and extrinsic motivation were in negative relation to the academic achievement and the
improvement of academic achievement level in Korean and Mathematics subjects. Creative
thinking ability was in positive relation to the achievements of the three subjects. It enhanced the possibility of reaching the proficient or advanced level of academic achievement in each subject.
Achievement in mathematics was in positive relation with the time of studying for oneself, and it
increased the possibility of reaching a advanced level, but it was in negative relation in Korean
and English subjects. Attitudes toward classes were in positive relation to the achievements in
Korean, English, and mathematics subjects, and they enhanced the possibility of reaching the
proficient or advanced improvement of academic achievement level. Maintaining good relationships
with classmates or complying well with rules did not always lead to a higher improvement of
academic achievement level, but it turned out to be helpful for below-basic level students in
certain subjects. The pre-private tutoring for English classes was in positive relation to academic
achievement and improvement of academic achievement level, while having private tutoring was in
positive relation to the achievement of English and mathematics subjects as well as improvement
of academic achievement level. Participation in after school program showed negative relation in
the subject of mathematics. To sum up, it turned out that school education activities examined in
this study including class atmosphere, pressure of achievement, teacher's enthusiasm, interaction
with students in classes, and extent of school violence did not affect academic achievement while
they affected improvement of academic achievement level in English and mathematics subjects in
a different level. Based on these research results, some policy implications were suggested.
