Early Poetry in AmericaImagism and its earlier findingsImagism, which is known to be one of the most compelling and noteworthy movement in history of literature, was actually a poetic trend of early twentieth century supported and adopted initially by handful of such modern poets as Ezra Pound, Hilda Doolittle, Richard Aldington, and F.S. Flint, as noted in four Imagist anthologies published between 1914 and 1918, yet leaving many other influenced either directly or indirectly. However, in this article, rather than examining how it influenced the contemporary or post-imagism poems, the main focus remains in associating earlier poems which exhibit some, if not all, imagism features with a typical imagist poem and trying to demonstrate that the flow had been, at least in part, influenced by those early poems. Though mainly roosting in a common sense that a chicken cannot be hatched out of nothing, this idea might provide some insights to the unexplored part of literary world.Prior to anan Imagist theory. The famous principles of Imagism, which were first set down in Flint's "interview" of Pound for Poetry in March 1913, were the following:1. Direct treatment of "thing," whether subjective or objective.2. To use absolutely no word that does not contribute to the presentation.3. As regarding rhythm: to compose in the sequence of the musical phrase, not in the sequence of the metronome.(Jones 129)An observation of a short poem “The Red Wheelbarrow” written by William Carlos Williams in 1923, which was….., will be the first start of journey into the new finding.so much dependsupona red wheelbarrowglazed with rainwaterbeside the whitechickens.(The Red Wheelbarrow, William Carlos Williams)As easily observable, in this poem no words used except for the purpose of projecting a complete image of such things as a wheelbarrow and chickens with abundance of colorful snapshot, rhythm has also been clearly built up to sound musical with alternating lines of two and one stressed sylrequently adopt leaving the vast space unfilled. In addition, it could also be seen as personally satisfying to the poet, representative of the possibility of an American way of life, or as a pleasurable poetic device.1) Therefore, Red Wheelbarrow, as noted, is in its complete form of imagist poem. Then, what kind of early poems can possibly be viewed as imagist in accordance with those criteria? Selected poems of mine are Rhodora and Aftermath, respectively by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, both of which have been discussed during the classes. It would not be true if they are said to fit into all three categories, yet taking a better observation at their characteristics with supposed standards would take us to the vicinity of the fresh appreciation of them. Quite interestingly, the poems, just like other early poems, have been so far handled and analyzed in terms of textual meaning and possible lessons, not with as many tools used as these days.“The Rhodora” definigory in light that it is dealing with the flower rhodora, and especially the earlier lines of the poem consist of description of environment surrounding it and with rich use of color and image-shaping words. It does not, though, either completely fail or meet the second standard. Words used in the first half of the poem absolutely build up the presentation of concrete images, whereas the second half does not truly reflect the adoption of descriptive words. However, meaningful in observing this poem is its halfway fitness into the imagist category in consideration that it was written in 1847, almost 70 years earlier of imagism prevalence. In “Aftermath,” though, more rhyming and rhythmic melody is permeable throughout the whole poem. Even though it appears not to make the most efficient use of language, which the third criterion means, after considering the time when it was written (1873), this type of concise writing with musical element was rarely seen, so we can judge by the contemporwn, birds, poppy, seeds, and crow, do function as painting tools with which to fill a clean canvas inside our mind, even if not as clearly as the modern imagist words. Finally, the poem undoubtedly deals with a thing. As noted, it describes the snapshot and sometimes the short clip of what it looks likes after war. And in the snapshots and short clips, the summer fields are mown, the birds are fledged and flown, and the dry leaves strew the path, which are all unhappy and very dry tone that formulates the dreary and deadpan feeling after war.Once again to be defined, imagism was a movement in early 20th-century Anglo-American poetry that favored precision of imagery, and clear, sharp language. 2) Nevertheless, as discussed so far, its sprout can be traced back to the earlier period in history of literature, at least in part, if not all. Briefly mentioned as it was during this argument, my conjecture is that it may be due to the lack of researchers’ interest in that feature of earlier p41).
American culture mirrored in TV show ‘Friends’Through ‘Friends’, which is a very famous TV sitcom aired originally in NBC, many aspects of American society are dealt with and viewed in various ways. And that is supposedly one of many factors that enabled the TV show to attract so many people not only from U.S. but also from around the world. Besides, popularity and fame it has in Korea is one significant reason why this has been picked out of uncountable numbers of TV shows in America because it means that it explains and displays those aspects of America easily enough to foreigners as well. In other words, many episodes of that show could be regarded as a well made miniature of huge American society.First, as America itself is called ‘melting pot’, the characters in ‘Friends’ also consist of people who have various nationality. Joey Trivionni is Italian, and Ross is a descendent from Jewish. Out of 6 main characters, roughly 30% of them are alien or are rooted in foreign culture. However, if supporting and extra characters counted in, the number of foreign-based characters would sharply increase. The point is that even though a lot of people inside that show have different backgrounds and roots one another, they intermingle very well and very naturally. This is an analogy of American society where many constituents in it have different colors, but at the same time those colors harmonize very well and present one totally different tone.Secondly, homosexual subject springs out in many different episodes. If it was in Korea that those homosexual scenes were aired, it would’ve created much more sensation than in U.S. Or simply those scenes could’ve been cut out even before they got projected on TV screens. What represents the homosexual culture in America can be seen in the relationship between Ross and his ex-wife. In that relationship and all the things going on with the lesbian family, it can be noticed that there aren’t as many social and systemic discriminations against that family in U.S. as in Korea. Not to mention that there are several states in U.S. that allows homosexual marriages in reality, it is well known that American society is much more tolerant with homosexual atmosphere in it. Probably one of many reasons why it can be relatively prevalent in American society is also somewhat due to its deeply rooted respect to ‘diversity’ and ‘freedom’.Thirdly, various structure of American family can be also peeped in many episodes of Friends. For example, Ross got divorced 3 times, while Rachel 2 times. On the other hand, Chandler has Dad who transited his gender to female, whereas Phobe’s Mom killed herself when she was still young and her father has gone away. In comparison, it is very hard to find those kinds of characters in Korean popular TV shows. That is just because those broken families aren’t as many in Korea as they are in U.S. Rather, Korean TV shows are almost always to encourage family connection and affection within its members. Probably the reason why they are somewhat ‘forced’ to do so is that Korean society is not so diversified yet as to accept those diversified form of family. Of course in this case, especially about family structure, being diversified and having lots of family arrangement in culture doesn’t mean the culture is superior to the other culture.
Play Review “Liar”BACKGROUNDThe original title of this play is “Run for your life,” which was premiered at Shaftesbury Theater in London, England. It was directed by Ray Cooney. It was so popular as to continue for next 8 years after its premier, and it is now being conducted in many other countries over the world translated into more than 40 languages. Characters are as follows:John Smith: a mid-aged man who has been successfully managed 2 familiesStanley Gardener: John’s friend who’s living under the same roofMary Smith: John’s first wifeBarbara Smith: John’s second wifePorterhouse: an old man who is generous detectiveBarby Franklin: costume designerTrouton: a young man who is keen and sensible detective, charismaticWhy did John Smith feel compelled to lie?It occurred to me that why he’s been forced to lie so much like that will be the main focus to understand this play. Why couldn’t he be honest about the truth, which will be revealed in the end-although nobody believes in the truth-? What drives him and leads him to the dead-end after all? Even though performance of this play seems focused on displaying comic situation that happens while all those lies being done, probably to understand these questions can lead us to the core of this play.To come up with the simple reason that he lies all the way, apparently he is driven by the “fear” of losing everything he got and achieved so far and, to top of it, being punished by law if the truth is revealed. Therefore, his behavior and reaction to the threat of revealing the truth is natural and, to some degree, understandable. However, wasn’t he too confident about his past success of concealing the truth and deceiving others? Probably, he would think of the first sign of danger that came to him not as a real threat, but as one of the usual trivial that have occurred repeatedly in his whole life. Therefore, this play lessons that intoxication with sets of successful lies could lead to another myriads of lies, and, in the end, it could guide a person to the dead-end that ties him or her down to the bottom.Lie, a black hole that disables people to exit.It seems that this play intends to give audiences the message that lie is severely addictive despite its somewhat distracting way - in that sense- of leading the plot. To make matters worse, by this play, it’s not difficult to conclude that a lie reproduces another lie. John makes his friend Stanley a rustic countryside farmer at first, then another John Smith, and then later, the worst of the worst homosexual partner. The lovable and loyal wife Mary suddenly becomes a crazy woman, who can’t see her husband right in front her eyes, and then uneducated and reckless nun. In addition, the attractive lover Barbara is forced to disguise herself as an uncontrollable caretaker and then, a sexually perverted sadist.Sets of reproduced lies became the huge engine of this play to draw audiences into its story and make them laugh and enjoy. Unexpected situation compels the protagonist and his surrounding characters to create another unreasonable lies to get out of the pending situation. That vicious circle repeats endlessly to the finish of this play, never knowing to put a period on it even after the “real” truth has been spoken. In a sense, this play, though this is much longer and well built, seems to have significant resemblance to the famous story of “shepherd,” who repeated lies and was rejected from the townspeople even after he confesses the truth.Audiences are even likely to get lost as the play goes on, for the identities of characters become so mixed and complicated to be neatly defined in a word the way it started. Believe it or not, this play intends to twist all the situation and circumstances in order to show audiences how addiction to lies can result in the worst situation of even losing “self.” In the end, lies that John repeatedly generates stab him from behind like a boomerang as they did to the ‘shepherd,’ who ended up dying because of his lies. Likewise, John himself loses his own identity and self, getting lost in the black hole named “lie.”Lessons & General FeelingsAfter watching the play and getting out of the theater, I could hear somebody say, “The lesson we got from this play is that we shouldn’t get caught if we have affairs.” For sure, that was a joke, but I’d like to take it as a satire toward the whole society. Likewise, this play was explicitly funny and with a lot of humor, at the same time satirical and to the point in terms of its sharp observation about the whole society. It was my second time to watch a play, but I’m sure that thanks to this play, until the third time there will NOT be as much term as I had between the first and second watch. It was FABULOUS. However, from now on, when I have to lie, I’d better be concerned about my nose wondering if it gets longer like Pinocchio as a punishment.
Counterculture of U.S. in 1960s20021643 Su-wan LimIn definition, ‘counterculture’ refers to the values and norms of behavior of a cultural group that go against those of the social mainstream of that time, terminology coined by Theodore Roszak. And, for example, it seems that in Korea, the biggest and hugest counterculture wave revealed itself in 1980s, in large part led by university students, in the form of demonstration and anti-government parade. Much earlier, in 1960s, there was the same kind of movement in the US, which is deemed to create huge impact on the contemporary, and even present American society. It was at that time mainly driven by strong reluctance against the contemporary social norms, which were legal segregation and Vietnam War, etc.Not to mention, literature and media have historically assumed significant roles in pioneering and advancing this sort of protestant movement against the mainstream society. It not being an exception for US, ‘protestation’ and ‘resistanterhouse-Five, bear those idiosyncrasies as well. Movies like Dr. Strangelove, Cool Hand Luke, and Easy Rider, and greater deal of songs by Bob Dylan should also be added to those written fictions to represent counterculture prevalent during that period. However, the most distinguishable quality of those works in 1960s of US lies in the fact that the social problems they were fighting against and the reason they were produced were quite different from those beforehand. To exemplify, they stemmed out of the social context where the political, social, and cultural aspects intermingled to create an overall problematic picture of 1960s, whereas the works in 1930s were, by and large, byproducts of general, accumulated popular discontent over a single factor of economic distress. In other words, the once visible objects to criticize became invisible because they got completely dissolved into the intermingled social system, so that they couldn’t pinpoint the exact location of tumors inside thet to be successful after all, creating far more sophisticated, as well as effective, protestant works against the mainstream norms. Instead of presenting the realistic resolution for the current problems due to their inability to look into the roots of them, they rather counted on reporting the visible outside. Usually with cynicism and satire, they try to add their own analysis and understandings on the situation at issue. This tendency can also be seen both in ‘Dr. Strangelove’ and ‘Slaughterhouse-Five.’Dr. Strangelove can be considered the quintessence of black comedy in terms of its satirical nature. Even if it doesn’t mention or introduce a significant idea of how to deal with the current situation, it surely describes severity of the trouble that US was in at that time, which was Cold War. Stanley Kubrick tried to show the fellow Americans that nuclear war is a bad idea not only for US, but also for Soviet Union, borrowing the Herman Kahn’s idea of doomsday machine. Besides that, emeanor such as Bombing in Dresden in World War II. Introducing the unrealistic and imaginary figure like the Trafalmadorians and embedding ‘so it goes’ at the every end of passages dealing with death, he tries to add comical but noteworthy sense to the whole story. The Trafalmadorians, who are the leading characters of this novel, represent the fatalistic belief that war is neither preventable nor avoidable in one way or another. However, by their ill-fated destruction of universe, Vonnegut seems to imply that simply taking hands off that issue and forgetting it is not an available option for human beings while they still have free wills.Another representative element of counterculture in 1960s differing from others is appearance of Hippies. Hippies were in its extreme form of counterculture against fixed society, in terms of the fact that they reject everything that is commonly expected of the individual in regard to employment and life goals, according to “What Is a Hippie” written , despite its nature going against social and political status quo. Interestingly, in line with what has been discussed above, Bob Dylan’s songs were not so analytic of the current situation that they can provide the available alternative for it. Rather, they merely characterized the phenomenon, just like the other fields of counterculture movement, and satirized or criticized it using lyrical and verbal techniques. For example, in Subterranean Homesick Blues, while he specifies and ridicules the restrictions on drug use with lines reading, “Johnny’s in the basement. Mixing up the medicine. I’m on the pavement. Thinking about the government,” he barely shows any concrete way out of it.To sum up, counterculture movement in 1960s was manifestation of ethos, and aspirations of minorities of the moment in US, and it became a cornerstone of the present American society. The Hippies attempted to rebel against the mainstream world fighting for social acceptance by experimentation with drug us
HANKOOK TIREPART IIndustry AnalysisKorea is the 5th tire maker in the world and its domestic tire market is expected to grow both in demand and supply until 2010, even though its growth rate will stagger around 3%. Likewise, the world market growth seems to hold at 3% in circumstances of increased cost of natural rubber, and crude oil. To overcome difficult situation, domestic Korean tire companies aggressively focus on selling high profit tires. Nonetheless, the world tire market has been dominated by oligopoly of top 12 companies, even in which there is huge price gap of products depending brand power and sales network. As for UHPT(Ultra High Performance Tire), ones produced by domestic companies are sold at 40% discounted price compared to the advanced companies overseas, though its gap is reported to be narrowed to 15% by 2010.Business AnalysisOverview on market performance of Hankook Tire in 2007Hankook Tire reported its sales, operating income, ordinary income and the net income s of Michelin, Good Year, and Firelli. Based on good reputation and the quality, it provides its products to Volkswagen, Volvo, GM, and Ford. To make matters better, once its newly open factory in Hungary starts operating, its sales and market dominance will soar up. In addition to the quality, its passion on R&D, stable relationship between employers and employees, and efficient management system played a huge role to enable the company to make it that far.PART IIForecasting Stock Price in Theory using Price Multiples(1) Forecast of future financial ration using past dataIf we’re to forecast the future performance of a certain company, it is necessary to analyze and monitor its past performance and accomplishments using financial statement and some index.
