「우리가 보는 세상은 진실한가」를 읽고들어가며「우리가 보는 세상은 진실한가」는 과학과 과학교육, 그리고 자연을 보는 인간의 심상에 관한 글들을 담고 있다.이 책의 저자는 ‘말하지 말고 들어라’ ‘무엇이 문제인가’ ‘과학은 복음인가 재앙인가’ ‘ 우리가 보는 세상은 진실한가’의 네 가지 주제 아래 각기 다른 소재별로 저자의 생각을 솔직하게 표현하였다. 과학이 단순한 공식의 집합체가 아니라 자연의 규칙성과 그 규칙성에 내재하고 있는 아름다움을 발견하고자 하는 노력이며, 과학교육이란 과학적인 지식을 전달하는 것이 아니라 자연의 아름다움을 발견하고 느끼도록 하며, 나아가 각자가 가지고 있는 잠재적 창의성을 발견하게 하는 것이라고 설명한다. 그리고 과학이 완전무결한 진리가 아니라, 인간이 자연 현상을 설명하기 위해서 만들었고 또 만들어가고 있는 불완전한 지식의 체계라는 것을 전달하여 과학이 가지는 긍정적인 면뿐만 아니라. 부정적인 면도 균형있게 부각시키고자 하였다. )필자는 이러한 책의 내용 중에 과학교육에 관련한 글들이 가장 인상 깊었다. 과학에 대하여 또 과학교육에 대하여 다시 한번 생각하는 기회를 가짐으로써 졸업 후 현장에서 과학을 가르칠 예비 교사로서의 마음가짐을 다질 수 있는 기회가 되었다.과학을 과학답게제 7차 교육과정이 학습자중심의 교육과정임을 표방하고 있다고 하지만 아직도 현장에서는 교사에 의한 천편일률적인 수업이 만연하다. 다시 말해 학습자의 적성과 흥미가 수업에 반영되는 일이 거의 드물다고 하겠다. 이러한 문제는 어디에서 연유한 것이며, 이에 대한 해결책은 무엇일까? 이와 같은 문제 의식으로 과학을 가르치는 교사(이후 과학교사)의 역할에 대해 생각해 보고자한다.다음과 같이 네 부류의 과학교사를 생각해 보자. 첫 번째 부류는 과학에 소질이 있는 학생이나 없는 학생이나 모두 과학을 좋아하게 하는 과학교사, 두 번째 부류는 과학에 소질이 있는 학생은 과학을 좋아하게 하고 소질이 없는 학생은 과학을 싫어하게 하는 과학교사, 세 번째 부류는 과학에 소질이 있는 학생은 과학을 싫어하고 소질이 없는 학생은 과학을 좋아하게 하는 과학교사, 네 번째 부류는 과학에 소질이 있는 학생이나 없는 학생이나 모두 과학을 싫어하게 하는 과학교사이다.이 중에서 어떤 과학교사가 가장 바람직한 교사일까? 많은 사람들은 첫 번째 부류의 과학교사 즉, 모든 학생이 다 과학을 좋아하게 하는 교사를 꼽지 않을까 생각한다. 그런데 다시 생각해 보면 이 과학교사가 반만 성공한 것이라는 것을 알 수 있다. 과학에 소질이 있는 학생이 과학을 좋아하고 과학 분야의 진로를 선택하는 것은 잘한 일이나 과학에 소질이 없는 학생을 과학을 좋아하게 만들고 나아가 이들이 과학 분야의 진로를 선택하게 한다면 크게 잘못한 것이다.필자의 생각으로는 두 번째 부류 즉, 과학에 소질이 있는 학생만 과학을 좋아하게 만드는 교사가 가장 바람직하지 않나 생각한다. 사람은 저마다의 소질이 있고 이 소질이 서로 다르다는 데에 묘미가 있다. 세상에는 과학에 소질이 있는 사람도 있고 소질이 없는 사람도 있다. 모든 사람이 다 과학을 좋아하고 과학에 소질이 있어야 한다고 생각하는 것은 너무 심한 욕심이 아닐 수 없다.모든 학생이 다 좋아하는 과학이란 어떤 것일까? 그것은 과학의 겉모습을 한 가짜 과학이 아닐까? 현란한 레이저 쇼를 보면 모든 사람이 다 좋아할 것이다. 그런데 그것이 과학일까? 우주선이 날고, 전투기가 곡예를 부리고, 물로켓이 높이 난다고 그것이 과학일까? 비록 그것이 과학적인 원리에 의해서 움직이고, 학생들을 신나게 할지라도 그것으로 과학이 되는 것은 아니다.이공계 기피다 과학교육이 위기다 하는 것은 첫 번째와 같은 과학교사가 없기 때문이 아니라 세 번째나 네 번째 부류의 과학교사들이 많기 때문이라고 생각한다. 과학에 소질이 있는 사람이 싫증나고 반면에 과학에 소질도 없는 학생이 자기가 마치 과학에 소질이 있는 것으로 착각하게 만드는 과학교육이 문제인 것이다.결론사회란 다양한 사람들이 다양한 일을 하는 곳이다. 과학자도 있어야 하지만 시인도 있어야 하고 화가도 있어야 한다. 모든 사람이 다 과학을 좋아하고 과학을 잘 알아야 하는 것은 아니다. 이러한 맥락에서 과학교육의 목표와 방향도 생각해야 할 것이다.
