포스트모더니즘과 S1MOME영어교육과텍스트로만 배웠던 포스트모더니즘은 S1MOME를 보고 나자 내게 좀 더 가깝게 느껴졌다. 영화는 허무맹랑한 이야기를 하고 있는 것처럼 보였지만, 그 속에 포스트모더니스트들이 바라보는 현실에 대한 진실을 담고 있었다. 그리하여 영화를 보는 내내 ‘시뮬라시옹’이라는 용어가 내 머리 속을 떠나지 않았다. 우리가 포스트모더니즘을 이야기하면서 빼먹을 수 없는 중요한 이론가라고 말하는 장 보드리야르는 그의 저서 《시뮬라시옹》에서 ‘실재의 소멸’로 잘 알려진 이론을 내놓게 된다. 이것은 영화, 텔레비전, 광고 이미지들의 영향력이 현대인의 일상 곳곳에 스며들어 현실과 상상, 실재와 환상, 표층과 심층 사이의 차이가 완전히 사라지게 되었다는 견해인데, 영화는 시몬이라는 캐릭터를 통해 포스트모더니즘이 현실 생활에서 어떤 양상으로 나타나고 있는지를 잘 보여주고 있다. 또한 이런 무차별적으로 주어지는 이미지를 무분별하게 소비하는 것이 인간에게 어떠한 영향을 미칠 수 있는지도 잘 드러내고 있어 여러 가지 생각을 하게 한다. 그리하여 영화에서 두드러지게 나타나는 포스트모더니즘적 징후들을 알아보고 그것이 우리에게 어떤 의미를 가질수 있는지를 알아보고자 한다.영화는 영화제에 두 번이나 이름이 올랐을 정도로 예술성을 추구하는 감독인 터랜스키가 까탈스러운 여배우를 위하여 형형색색의 사탕들 가운데 체리맛 사탕을 골라내고 있는 장면으로부터 시작한다. 이런 노력에도 불구하고 여배우는 자신이 탈 차가 다른 배우의 차보다 더 작다는 이유와 사소한 다른 이유들을 들어 터랜스키와 작품을 하지 않겠다고 선언함으로서 영화사에서 잘리고 여 주인공을 구할 수 없는 곤혹스런 상황에 빠지고 만다. 이 당시의 배우는 영화사나 영화를 만드는 영화감독보다도 더 강한 파워를 가지고 있었고 타인에 의해서 자신의 이미지를 만들기 보다는 본래의 자기 자신을 드러내 보이는데 중점을 둔 것 같다. 그러나 오래전에 영화를 만들던 방식만을 기억하고 과거의 영광만을 안고 사는 그에게 이런 배우들의 태도는 썩 달가운 것이 아니다. 그리하여 시몬을 통하여 자신이 영화 배우나 영화사, 세상에게 하고 싶은 말들을 표현하고, 그녀의 영화가 엄청나게 흥행을 하면서 이런 배우들의 입장이 바뀌게 된다. 그들은 스스로 빛을 발하는 존재가 아니라 다른 사람들이 비춘 것을 비추는 존재로 변한다. 시몬은 다른 배우들처럼 자신을 내세우지 않는다. 처음 영화 두 편을 찍었을 때는 철저히 터랜스키가 의도한 것을 비춤으로서 그의 욕구를 실현시켰고, 영화들이 엄청나게 흥행한 후에 터랜스키가 대중에게 진실을 밝히지 않고 사람들의 욕구, 만족을 위해서 그녀의 이미지를 만들어 갈 때는 한 개인을 넘어서 사회 전체의 집합적인 욕망을 구현하게 된다. 그리고 이것으로 인하여 그녀는 대중의 가치관과 행동양식에 동시적으로 영향을 주게 된다. 그러나 이 이미지는 대중들의 것을 반영하고 있기도 하지만 또한 자본주의의 논리를 따라 영화사가 이익을 위해서 만들어내는 이미지까지도 반영하고 있는 것이다. 그리하여 그녀의 이미지는 대중들의 욕구에 영합하기 위하여 세심하게 다듬어지고 만들어진 것이고, 이에 따라 대중들은 아무런 비판적 의식 없이 그녀를 받아들인다. 시몬이 실재하는지 아닌지는 중요한 것이 아니다. 단지 대중은 자신들의 욕망을 실재적으로 구현하는 시몬의 이미지만을 소비하고 있을 뿐이다. 시몬은 대중과 소속사가 만들어낸 이미지 속에서 독자적으로 살아가게 되었고, 그녀가 엄청난 인기를 누리며 세상을 자신의 얼굴로 덮자 실재는 없어지고 세상은 이미지로만 남게 된다. 보드리야르가 말했듯이 포스트모더니즘의 사회는 이미지에 의해 작동하며 이러한 이미지들은 순수한 환영이며 가짜인 것이다.영화에서 명백한 사실로 나타나고 있는 것은 시몬이 실재하는 인물이 아니고 0과 1의 컴퓨터 기호로만 이루어져있어 픽셀로서 자신을 표현하고 있다는 것이다. 이것은 우리가 초현실주의 화가 르네 마그리트의 작품을 통해 기호가 그 기호의 이면에 상응하는 실재가 없다는 사실을 숨기는 단계가 있다는 것을 배운 것과도 상통하는 맥락이다. 그녀는 실재하고 있지만 그에 상응하는 실재는 없다. 그러나 영화 속에서 터랜스키 감독을 제외하고는 누구도 그녀가 실재하지 않는 다는 사실을 알지 못하고, 알게 되었음에도 믿으려 하지 않는다. 그리하여 픽셀로만 이루어진 그녀가 영화에 출현을 하고, 광고를 찍고 잡지에 나오며, 홀로그램으로 콘서트를 한다. 한명을 속이는 것보다는 수십만을 속이는 것이 쉽지라고 말하는 터랜스키의 모습과 실제로 그 홀로그램이 실재하는 인물이라고 믿고서 시몬에게 열광하는 수많은 사람들의 모습은 실로 기묘한 대조를 이루고 있다. 그래서 시몬의 모습은 시몬이라는 실재가 현실에 존재하지 않는 다는 사실을 알리지 않기 위해서 방송에 출현을 하고, 영화를 찍고, 콘서트를 한다. 이미지의 부재를 나타내지 않기 위하여 더 많은 이미지를 소비하게 만드는 것이다. 그리하여 대중은 시몬으로서 나타내지는 이미지를 소비하면서 시몬의 실재를 믿는다. 시몬이 실재하는 것과 시몬이 나타내고 있는 것 사이의 구별은 점점 모호해지고 그리하여 보들리야르가 이야기했던 하이퍼리얼이 되는 것이다. 이것은 우리가 광고 또는 티비 프로그램에 출현했던 연기자나 스타의 모습을 보고 그것이 그들의 진짜 모습일것이라고 믿는 것과도 유사하다. 그들이 재현했던 사람들의 모습은 실재하는 것이 아니고 단지 그들이 모사했던 것일 뿐이다. 그러나 사람들은 그들의 이미지가 자신의 가치관과 행동양식에 영향을 주길 바라는 방향으로 자신의 욕구를 왜곡되게 주입하여 자기 방식대로 받아들이고 소비한다. 스타들이 보여주는 수많은 모습들 중에서 자신들이 보고 싶어하는 모습만을 받아 들여 이것이 실재라고 믿는 것이다. 이런 식으로 시몬이 실재하는 것인지 시몬의 이미지가 실재하는 것인지의 구별이 모호해지고, 터랜스키 자신이 시몬을 통해 구현하고자 했던 욕구와 대중들이 소비하길 바라는 욕구 사이에서 창조자 터랜스키는 혼란스러움을 느낀다.여기서 한가지 주의하여 볼 점은 처음에 터랜스키가 시몬을 자신이 완벽하게 통제하고 있고, 자신이 시몬을 통하여 영화를 만듦으로서 자신의 욕망을 실제로 구현하고 있다고 생각했다는 것이다. 그러나 연이어 첫 영화부터 그리고 그 다음, 그 다음 영화가 흥행에 성공을 할 때까지도 대중들의 관심은 터랜스키의 영화 자체가 아니고 오로지 시몬에게만 쏠리게 된다. 그리하여 터랜스키는 행크가 프로그램에 미쳐 8년동안 자신을 돌보지 않아 결국 죽음을 맞게 된 것과 유사하게 자신이 가지고 있던 인간성을 슬슬 상실해가기 시작한다. 또한 자신이 만들었기에 자신이 원하는 대로 조종할 수 있을 것이라고 생각했던 시몬이 자신의 뜻대로 움직이지 않는 상황을 겪게 되자 극심한 혼란을 겪는다. 이는 터랜스키 자신과 자신이 만들어낸 이미지 사이의 관계에 변화가 온 것을 의미하고 이 관계로 인하여 터랜스키는 시몬을 없애버릴 생각을 한다. 그리하여 시몬에게 바이러스를 주입하고 부두가에 가서 자료들을 없애버림으로써 성공적으로 처리했다고 생각했지만, 미디어와 대중의 머릿속에 이미 존재하는 실재로 각인된 시몬 때문에 실제로 자신이 위험에 처하게 된다. 정말 아이러니한 일이 아닐 수가 없다.이런 상황을 해결해나가는 과정 속에서, 터랜스키와 일레인, 터랜스키와 변호사, 터랜스키와 대중은 포스트모더니스트들이 애기한 ‘언어게임’을 하고 있지만 그들 모두 그것이 의미하는 바를 온전히 깨닫지 못하고 있다. 시몬이 있다 없다로 이야기를 하고 있는 건 그들이지만 그들 자신도 답이 무엇인지는 알지 못한다. 시몬과 그의 사이를 오해하여 시몬에게 그가 버려질 것을 걱정해주고 질투하던 일레인에게 터랜스키는 마침내 시몬에 대한 비밀을 털어놓을 결심을 한다.시몬은 실제 인간이 아니야 내가 창조해낸거야/모든 배우는 창작품이야 빅터당신은 운이 좋았어, 그녀가 의리를 지켜서 당신 옆자릴 지켰으니까.그녀는 공기같은 거야, 시몬은 픽셀이야, 수학방정식으로 내가 만들었지 한 미치광이로부터 물려받은거야/ 도대체 술을 얼마나 마신거야?/시몬은없어 내가 시몬이야 /당신이 시몬이라구?내가 불가능한 일을 해냈어 내가 인간의 영혼을 재 창조해낸거야 사람들 사이의 차이점으 뽑아서 다듬은 거지 무에서 유를 만들어냈어 내가 기게에 생명을 불어넣은거야 /맹세해 하느님은 아실꺼야 내가 시몬을 만들었어/ 당신이 시몬을 만들었다구? 시몬이 당신을 만들었어.일레인과 터랜스키의 대화는 이전에 우리가 배웠던 ‘고도를 기다리며’의 에스트라공과 블라디미르가 하는 ‘언어게임’과 같은 양상을 보여주고 있다. 둘은 어떤 합의점을 찾지 못한채 그저 언어유희와 같이 대화를 나누고 있을 뿐이다.또한 터랜스키가 시몬의 장례식을 치르던 도중 시몬을 살해했다는 혐의를 받고 잡혀가게 돼서 형사와 변호사와 나누는 대화들 또한 이런 맥락에서 이해가 가능하다.모든 영화, 인터넷 인터뷰, 광고사진. 어린시절의 사진 이 모든게 다 합성이군요?/그렇죠 다 이해하셨군요 그러니까 사기는 쳤지만 살인은 하지 않았어요/ 세계적으로 수 백만명이 가입한 팬클럽이 가짜겠군요?/ 아니요 그건 진짜에요 그러나 그들이 숭배하던 것은 0과 1뿐인 프로그램입니다/ 시몬이 원래 없었기 때문에 죽일수도 없었겠군요? 그러면 당신이 자주 애기하던 시몬만드는 걸 도왔다는 행크 또한 창작품이겠군요?/ 아니에요 다 미친짓이에요 시몬은 없어요 그 이름조차 합성일 뿐이에요 시뮬레이션 원, 컴퓨터 프로그램이에요/ 시몬을 정말 증오하는 군요
