  • Freedom Writers Diary with Erin Gruwell
    I. SynopsisThe Freedom Writers Diary talks about afflictions of teenagers such as racism, rape, drugs, and family problem in Wilson High School in the United States. Most of the students in Wilson high school live in rural areas where sound of gun shots and smell of drugs never leave. The students meet new English teacher, Ms. Erin Gruwell, whom they thought that she would stop teaching in a short time, but actually she changed their lives. Ms. Gruwell gives books to read which she thought it would change the students’ lives.By reading books like Anne Frank’s Diary, Zlata’s Diary, The Catcher in the Rye, and The Color Purple, they found similarities between themselves and the story. In most books, the main character suffers from war, for students, they suffer from “undeclared war”. Some of them are killed just because of their different colors of skin; some of them are suffering because of parents who fight everyday. Some of them are suffering because their relatives are killed innocen: to roll or compress into a thin plateParaphrase of the dictionary definition: to make a thin layered plateIII. Synthesis1. Discuss discrimination. How evident was this in this in the context of the novel?Discrimination is an act to treat people differently. The discrimination was very evident in this novel. The students were discriminated according to their races: white Americans, black Americans, Latinos, and Asians. Everyone from different races triedto kill other races just because they are different. They even made gangs to oppose each other. Many suffered from depression and sadness that their relatives died just because he or she is different. The sound of gun shots was easily heard in the projects where students lived. This sound was a lullaby to some. In there, it was wiser to wear a flak jacket rather than wearing attractive clothes. Discrimination caused a lot of things. For example, many teenagers started to be in part of gang because they wanted to avenge to those who kills no discrimination. Each individual must love, or at least not hate each other. They also need to encourage each other to have hope. Love makes everything go around.3. Describe Erin Gruwell. Why was she impassioned to bridge the gap between races and cultures in her classroom? How was she able to achieve what many teachers in her school failed in? In what does the novel emphasize the vital role of the Educational institution in solving and eliminating the problem of discrimination – between races, religion and gender?Erin Gruwell is compassionate, caring, and loving teacher. She was impassioned to bridge the gap between races and cultures in her classroom because when she was a student teacher, she saw students bullying one student. She shouted to students, “This is the type of propaganda that the Nazis used during the Holocaust.” Then most of the students asked what is Holocaust. She got surprised and asked them again, “How many of you have been shot at?” Most of the students raised to students. For students who receive high educations, they would not be interested this activity. It is because they would not have anything to complain about. Contrarily, students in Wilson High School would have many things to say. They are always surrounded by afflictions. For these reasons, students in Ms. Gruwell’s class reacted positively.5. Why would teenagers resort to rebellion leading to violence? Relate this with thecondition of teenagers today.Teenagers in Freedom Writers Diary resorted to rebellion leading to violence because of many reasons. Some joined gang because the police killed one of their relatives. The depression inside them turned out to rebel outside. Some joined them because they hated people of different races who hated them too.Teenagers today are idealistic. They aspire that are not realistic. When people become teenagers, they have their own standards and thoughts. If adults insult their thoughts, they tend to think that they have freedom to have their owions to the teenagers in the world.Emotional and Mental- She showed students that she really loves and cares about them.- They showed the world that anyone can be changed by reading books and writing.- She inspired students that they can survive the “undeclared war”, too- She inspired students to write the diary of their own just like she did.Personal reaction toward the character and how he/she portrayed reading books,- Ms. Gruwell is the ideal teacher for all students. Students need teacher who cares and loves them.- Despite of many afflictions, they were able to change, and furthermore, changed America.- She is a good model for Freedom Writers, as well as teenagers today. Despite all the afflictions, we can survive only if we have courage to.- She inspired me to write a diary. I also learned that she is a good model of teenagers despite she did not survived war.I also realized that just like Ms.Gruwell, I can be a positive influence to people. To influence people, I have to be compa.

  • A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer
    I. SynopsisThere was an ordinary family who would always love each other. The mother, Catherine Roerva, started to drink an alcohol, and started to fight with her husband, Stephen Joseph. Catherine blamed everything to one of his son, David Pelzer. She started to abuse him physically and mentally. She would lock him inside the gas chamber where David barely survived. She would also oblige him to drink his own vomit. David was not fed, but treated like a slave of the house. When his brothers ate dinner, played with their toys, David was not allowed to join them. But Stephen gave David hope that someday, they would escape from the house. As time went by, Catherine and Stephen divorced, so Stephen left the house alone. He simply abandoned David who was constantly abused by his mother. This fact abused David mentally and spiritually. He started to blame God for everything. One day, when David went to school, his teachers and nurse who knew about the incidents happening, reported it to polic very own mother was torturing him. In those days, his father who constantly told David that someday they will escape even abandoned him by divorcing and moving out from the house. This act of father made David to lose only hope he had.And these caused spiritual abuse because David, who always prayed to God, thought that he was even abandoned by God. He would blame God for everything. He also started to hate himself and he self-accused that why he was born in the first place. He was born to be loved, but he did not receive those he really needed.2. Discuss the psychological instability of the mother. What could have caused his mother to abuse him? Is there any explanation as to why she did what she did to David? If so, is the probable explanation justifiable?David’s mother had a psychological instability. At first, she was a normal housewife who would always love her children and beloved by her husband. David’s family was happy before the mother started to drink. She started to give chation to police which will make David safe.We can say that abandonment by father was worse than the abuse inflicted by his mother because David lost hope of living. David even blamed himself that why he was born in the first place. Basically, the father was very weak and he was a coward who can not do anything to stop abuse his pitiful son. He did not do a great job as a father. He just pitied David because he was abused by his wife. His love to David was not true love. A true love is sacrificial and unconditional.4. Discuss survival. In what way did David cope with the abuses? Can you say that the school authorities did their part in helping David? Is it justifiable for him to have ran away from home – away from his biological family?David coped with the abuses by enduring and hoping. He was also clever to make decisions that will not make his mother angrier. When he was in the “gas chamber”, he tried to survive by breathing inside water. When he was not fed, he ate only in the morninn David was abandoned by his father, he blamed God for this tragic situation, but in the end, God helped him. He would repent for blaming him before. The best way for David to handle and perceive his traumatic past is to forget about it. He must only think about his hopeful future. There are many things he can do in the world. Also, he must not be afraid to communicate with others. If he has a difficulty communicating with others, he might not be able to get a job he wants in order to survive. Since he is a smart and clever boy, there is high possibility that he would survive alone in the world. When he would be depressed he must pray to God.6. In what way did the story of David Pelzer impact your life and your view of it? Did it change your perspective on yourself, your family, and the Lord? Did it move/compel you to make positive and life-changing actions?“A Child Called “It”” impacted my view of many things. I realized that there were a lot of terrible people in this world. I was alsould also observe David everyday and record his physical state.Jeong 8 of 10PhysicalHe was young boy who had many wounds in his body because of his mother who always hit him. He was dirty because his mother did not allow him to take a bath. She was lovable and beautiful person. But, alcoholism totally changed her to child abuser. His job, fireman, tells us that he was strong. He had broad shoulders which represents power of men.The book does not say anything about her physical traits.Emotional and MentalHe was emotionally or mentally strong. He endured all the hardships and abuses from his mother and father. We can say that he is kind-hearted because he did not rebel strongly against his mother. She was very much affected by alcohol which made her a terrible person. She thought that her husband does not love her anymore because of David, so she abused him. She was mentally ill because she was still nice to others except David. The dualism was so evident.Unlike his physical features, he ha
