Although there may be a difference in asserting the degree of phenomenon, it seems undeniable that there is a strong relationship between the way of thought and languages people use. Language, which is a part of culture, is a crucial means for not only inter-communication but intra-communication, and, therefore, it is impossible to say people’s life from day to night apart from languages. In the video named “East and West” explicitly shows how people’s attitude toward surroundings can vary in the different community with detailed reasons, which is naturally led to the difference in their way of expressing.First of all, the way of thinking about relationship between objects is entirely different. Asians tend to recognize two matters as related ones, which means they do not exist independently but constantly affect each other, and the place between them is not simply an empty space but filled with invisible energy causing objects to influence and be influenced. On the other hand, westerners look world as a unit of separated objects, presupposing that there is nothing between things and they do not affect to the others as well.Such distinguishing features become the main cause for differing language property. The most intriguing attributes was articles which are usually underlined in English. Unlike other easterners’ languages, English always needs specific determiner that indicates the number of following nouns like ‘a’, or ‘the’. Video demonstrates that this special feature of English came from westerners’ way of viewing the surroundings independently. It was articles that made me lose a lot of points in grammar section and, as a result, discourage studying English. I used to make a mistake not putting articles before nouns several times since there is no such grammatical rule in Korean. The different manner of looking objects, also, give rise to distinction between preference for using noun and verb. According to the simple experiment, observing discourse between mother and child, easterners are more likely to frequently use verbs whereas westerners are using more nouns than verbs.Secondly, easterners and westerners show obvious distinction regarding to the reference of perceiving. Easterners recognize things as a third-person’s point of view while westerners set the reference point at the place where they are. This results in the situation that Korean students often feel hard to answer the negative interrogative sentences, learning English as the answer become totally reversed because of their differing cognition. I was also one of them who suffered from confusing answer for the negative interrogative sentences, and since I was taught to just memorize them, it was surprising aspect for me to know there was a certain reason for such difference. Korean society tend to extremely emphasize to be humble and modest even though it gets better nowadays, which is also a consequence of cognition manner mentioned above. There might be somehow advantages of such attitude; nevertheless, in my opinion, it would be desirable to give an enough courage and self-confidence rather than having them not to show off their strength and capacity, especially when it comes to an educational field. In that perspective, it would be necessary to observe and learn westerners’ advantageous attitudes.With several absorbing experiments and reactions of people in different countries, it was interesting to know various difference of westerners and easterners’ perception of the world. In the show, Beak jongwon, who established and is successfully managing various franchised cafés and restaurants, gives an advice to those who are suffering from running their restaurants. In one interview, he said, “Many people are eager to succeed, so they just rush into the restaurant business. I think it is the main problem that they overlook how much preparation and cautious plan is needed to be successful.”. In reality, it has been debatable whether prosperous in life comes from taking risks or that success results from careful planning. In my opinion, however, I would say success is associated with careful planning rather than taking risks for letting us to find opportunities, enabling to be efficient, and improving our resilience.Supporters of taking risks claim that people nowadays tend to be overly cautious and afraid for the failure. According to their point of view, these features often result in missing out on some amazing opportunities which may lead them toward successful life. However, such an argument completely ignores the fact that not all the opportunities can be easily seized. Discovering an appropriate chance and grabbing it can be done only by the one who is readied with careful plan. The world has always been filled with abundant opportunities, but without thorough preparation, people might easily miss those chances available to them. What is more, planning carefully is very helpful in drawing lessons to enhance ourselves. It stands to reason that no one is perfect in performing things from the first time. Considering it, detailed life schedule can give us great reference to dwell on personal problems so that we can improve our abilities.Counterparts also maintain that taking risks enable people to experience various things. Some of them are even a firm believer who thinks no matter what that experience is, it would be useful to take risks as much as possible. Although such variety of situations might somehow be a nourishment while living life, I am confident that it would be less efficient way than planning in advance. Foreseeing upcoming opportunities make us become more active and control ourselves better, which naturally makes us handle a matter effectively.The final argument made by risk takers is that dealing with challenging situations can boost our self-confidence and flexibility even if it is turned out to be failed. Consequently, one who takes risks can be an ideal person with resilience and adaptability in modern society. However, that assertion is making a huge error because it depends on one’s personality or background whether they learn valuable lesson or become depressed and demoralized by failure. Contrary to such an uncertainty, having a clear design for future make us have a reasonable mental stability. Though things do not work out as it is planned, we can easily jump up to plan B if we have been prepared in a thorough, detailed way. It means we can practice resilience and flexibility better while planning, which, by extension, would be helpful for developing our strategic thinking as well.Preparing and planning bring us enormous benefits to be successful. We can catch wonderful opportunity and fully utilize it by being readied. With meticulous arrangement serving as an error corrector, we also can get a time-effective way to reach our destination. Moreover, it enables quick recovery from trouble, naturally helping us to hone flexibility, resilience, and strategic reasoning. People tend to put much emphasis on taking risks in order to become prosperous in life without thinking of planning. Although it can be one way to attain successful life, it is undeniable that, without good schedule, there are always possibilities that all the efforts might end up in vain after all. 교육의 본질: 어떻게 가르치고 평가해야 할까?교육에 대한 문제점을 논의하는 자리에서 언제나 언급되는 이야기가 있다. 바로 ‘입시’이다. 우리나라 교육의 현주소는 어디인가, 바로잡아야 할 교육 정책은 무엇이며 어떤 방향으로 나아가야 하는가 등 열의를 가지고 조금 더 나은 교육을 만들기 위해 토론하지만 언제나 제자리로 돌아오고 마는 것은 우리나라의 ‘대학입시’라는 커다란 장벽이 견고하게 자리잡고 있기 때문일 것이다. 라는 제목을 보고 책에서 교사의 자리에서 우리나라의 입시제도에도 불구하고 어떻게 올바른 교육을 추구할 수 있을지에 대한 해결책을 얻을 수 있을 것이라 기대했지만, 책을 다 읽고 난 지금도 여전히 입시는 교사가 대항하기에 너무 버거운 단어라는 생각이 지워지지 않는다. 그러나 교육이라는 큰 틀 아래서 새롭게 깨우치게 된 바가 있어 다음의 두 가지로 책을 통해 느낀 생각을 정리해보려고 한다. 교사는 어떤 마음으로 학생들을 가르쳐야 하며, 가르친 내용을 어떻게 평가해야 하는지에 대해서 이야기하고자 한다.고등학교 때 비영리 단체인 “교육을 바꾸는 사람들”의 이찬승 대표님을 만나 인터뷰를 진행한 적이 있다. 교육 동아리의 부원들과 공교육의 전반적인 문제에 대해 탐구하고 이에 대한 해결책을 찾아보았지만, 끝내 해결하지 못했던 의문점이 있어 그것들을 해결하고자 했다. 수많은 궁금증에 대한 답변들은 모두 인상깊었으나 특히 지금까지도 대표님의 답변 내용이 선명하게 기억나는 인터뷰 질문이 있다. ‘어떻게 개인적인 이익 추구에 대한 유혹을 저버리시고 비영리 단체를 설립하겠다는 결정을 내릴 수 있으셨나요?’라는 질문에 대표님은 이렇게 말씀하셨다. ‘유리하게 태어난 사람은 불리하게 태어난 사람을 도와서 같이 살아갈 의무가 있다고 생각했기 때문이다.’ 책의 본문에서는 ‘지적 인종주의’라는 표현이 등장한다. 태어날 때 자신의 인종을 선택해서 태어날 수 없듯이 우리는 부모의 경제적 지위나 학습 능력을 선택하여 태어날 수 없다는 이야기이다. 이렇게 학생들의 개별적인 학업 성취도는 일부 외적 요인에 의해서도 영향을 받는데, 이것으로 학생들에게 등수를 매기는 것은 무언의 폭력이라는 것이다.우리나라의 입시제도 하에서는 개인의 의지로 통제할 수 없는 외부적 요인이 꽤 큰 비중으로 영향을 끼친다는 것을 느껴왔던 나로서는 지극히 공감이 가는 내용이었다. 그러나 우리나라는 여전히 외부의 획일적인 외부의 기준점을 두어 개성을 묵살하는 방식으로 학생들을 평가하고 있다는 생각이 들어 안타까운 마음이 들었다. 이에 적어도 교사는 이러한 사실을 충분히 인지하고 학생들에게 용기를 북돋아 줄 수 있는 존재가 되어야 할 것이다.‘존경’과 ‘사랑’이라는 키워드에 대한 강의에서도 교사가 학생들을 어떤 마음으로 가르쳐야 하는지에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있었다. ‘나보다 뛰어난 상대를 존경하는 순간, 그 사람의 지식은 나의 것이 된다’는 구절은 교사와 학생의 관계에 대해 재고하게 한다. 교사와 학생은 수직적 관계라는 인식은 구시대적인 발상이며 교사는 학생과 수평적 관계에서 함께 성장하는 사람이 되어야 한다는 생각이 들었다. 자신의 지식을 뽐내며 학생들에게 일방적으로 주입하려는 교사가 아닌 학생 개개인이 가진 가능성을 발견하고 이를 존중하며 함께 배울 수 있는 교사가 진정 훌륭한 교사일 것이다. 존경과 존중의 마음가짐은 사랑으로 이어진다. 선생님의 학생들을 향한 진심을 담은 사랑은 거대한 힘이 있다. 이 부분을 읽으며 그동안 내가 지나쳐온 적지 않은 멘티들을 떠올리게 되었다. 첫 만남은 언제나 고됬지만 결국 진심을 담은 애정은 모든 아이들을 변화시킬 수 있는 큰 힘을 가지고 있었다. 사랑을 주는 것을 좋아하는 나의 특성 덕분에 많은 멘티들에게서 긍정적인 변화를 이끌어낼 수 있었다고 생각한다.다음으로 학생들을 어떻게 평가해야 하는가에 대한 이야기이다. 이 역시도 크게 두 가지 논점을 생각해볼 수 있었는데 우선 평가의 방식을 나누는 큰 틀인 절대평가와 상대평가에 대한 논의이다. 우리나라의 교육 현실에만 몸 담그고 있던 나는 절대평가에 대해 부정적인 입장을 취해왔었다. 이는 절대평가를 실시했을 때 벌어질 것이라 예상되는 여러 가지 변별력과 관련된 문제들 때문이었다. 그러나 이것은 근본적인 문제점을 간과한 판단이라는 생각이 들었다. ‘모든 과목에서 우수하기를 바라는’ 우리나라의 상대평가제도는 개개인에게 비효율적이며 사회적으로도 큰 도움이 되지 않는 방식이다. 모든 아이들이 모든 분야에서 뛰어나기는 현실적으로 어렵다. 따라서 학습내용의 평가는 기본적인 학문적 소양은 갖추되 각자가 보다 재능을 가진 분야에 많은 노력을 기울일 수 있는 방향으로 진행되어야 한다. 또한 상대평가 제도 아래서는 ‘협력을 이끌어내기 힘들’뿐 아니라 현재 우리나라의 모습과 같은 과열된 경쟁 구도를 만들어낸다는 점 역시 간과할 수 없는 문제점이다.다음으로 세부적인 평가 방식에 대한 부분이다. ‘우리는 암기를 할 때 그들은 글쓰기를 한다.’ 스웨덴의 글쓰기를 통한 평가 방식은 그동안 우리나라에서는 상상하지 못했던 방법으로 나에게 신선한 충격을 안겨주었다. 고등학교 3학년 시절, 대학 입시를 위해 자기소개서를 쓰는데 무척 힘들었던 기억이 떠올랐다. 각종 공식과 단어들을 암기하고 이것을 바탕으로 맞는 답을 골라내는 기계적인 공부를 반복하던 당시의 나에게 온전히 나만의 생각을 써내려 간다는 것은 너무도 생소하고 어려운 일이었다. 대학교에 들어온 지금에 와서야 교양과목으로 글쓰기를 공부하고 있지만 이 역시도 그동안 해오지 않았던 것이라 어색하기만 했다. 스스로 지적 호기심을 충족하기 위해 책을 읽고, 인터넷 검색을 해보며 얻은 지식을 바탕으로 글을 쓰는 것은 당장은 주입식 교육에 비해 적은 양의 지식을 얻는 것처럼 보일 수 있으나 장기적으로 보았을 때 더 오래, 또렷하게 수많은 기억들 속에서 살아남는다. 교육 동아리에서 활동하며 한학기동안 거대한 프로젝트를 진행했던 적이 있었다. 을 읽고 책의 한 구절, 한 구절의 의미를 파악하기 위해 친구들과 머리를 싸매고 고민하였고, 거기서 얻은 지식을 확장시켜 공교육의 지향점에 대해 논의하였다. 이 과정을 전부 글로 작성하며 한 권의 책을 만들었는데, 불과 1년까지만 해도 술술 외웠던 각종 수학공식들은 하나도 기억이 나지 않지만 이 프로젝트를 진행하며 얻었던 교육에 대한 지식들은 여전히 내 머릿속 한쪽에 깊숙이 자리하고 있다.더불어 우리나라에서는 교육을 지식 습득에 한정하는 데 반해 앎을 실행에 옮기는 것까지 교육의 범주에 포함하는 스웨덴의 독특한 교육철학 역시 인상깊었다. 평가는 교사가 앞으로 어떤 수업을 구상하여 학생들을 이끌어 나갈지 결정하는 데 큰 영향을 미친다. 따라서 학생들이 올바른 배움으로 나아갈 수 있게 하기 위해서 학습 내용의 평가 방법은 매우 중요하다.당장 우리나라의 고질적인 입시제도의 문제점을 고치는 것은 힘들어 보인다. 그러나 책을 읽으며 교사의 명확하고 올바른 교육철학의 설립이 교육 과정에서 큰 힘을 발휘할 수 있을 것이라는 확신을 얻을 수 있었다. 이에 교육과 관련된 다양한 책을 읽으며 이번 교육철학을 구체적이고 심층적으로 작성하려 한다. 또한 이렇게 형성한 나의 교육철학을 대학교 4년 동안 지속적으로 수정하고 발전시켜 나만의 교육철학을 확고히 한 교사로 거듭날 것이다. 독후감상문
