  • [영문] 식량 문제 영어 에세이, Food Crisis Essay
Food Crisis EssayAgriculture can be defined as farming and the methods that are used to raise and look after crops and animals. The most important role of agriculture is to produce the food for the survival of humankind. Human has fundamentally relied on this skill in the history of humankind, and this trend will unquestionably continue in the future. However, in the present day and age, humankind is confronted by unprecedented global food issues. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, (2017) expected that a number of global trends are dramatically affecting food security, poverty and the overall sustainability of food and agricultural systems, also these tendencies pose a series of challenges to food and agriculture. They argued that it is the essential time to reconsider food systems and governance to tackle current and future challenges such as climate change, a dramatic increase in population which can trigger the food disasters. This essay will discuss the se economic issue. For instance, the lifetime earnings of children from low-income families are highly likely to be lower than children from a well-to-do family. Also, the world’s most impoverished nations such as Somalia, South Sudan, and Togo are struggling with poverty and malnutrition. Poverty is a fundamental and structural problem, so the world should no longer shift the responsibility of this issue to a person. Regarding this issue, several non-governmental organizations such as UNICEF are supporting undernourished people to tackle this current and future threat. Likewise, above all things, the recognition of the right to food is an essential part of a solution to address this problem on a fundamental level. The UN Committee of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights explains in its General Comment NO.12 (1999) that “the right to adequate food is realized when every man, woman, and child, or in community with others, has physical and economic access at all times to adequate food or mircle. For example, if exporters of food reduce the number of food exports due to global warming, some countries which heavily depend on imports of food such as South Korea and Japan will suffer heavily. This result will not only cause conflict in their society but also, increase the number of people suffering from poverty. There are some considerable solutions to address this difficulty. Representatively, reducing carbon footprints can be a fundamentally efficient solution to climate change. The Greenhouse effect caused by carbon dioxide is especially singled out as the culprit behind global warming. If people are encouraged to carry out pro-environmental behaviour such as recycling and economizing in power, the amount of carbon dioxide pollution will slacken. For example, if the national recycling rate in the UK increases to 35%, greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 9.8 MMTCE (Million Metric tons of Carbon Equivalent) (Archive.epa.gov, n.d.). This straightforward solution willleast double (population institute, n.d.). It is hard to anticipate success in a short period with our current agricultural technology. Thus, first of all, a substantial investment on agriculture must take precedence for food production to be maximized. And in the long-term, governments should focus on slashing global greenhouse gas emissions at the same time to allow for the sustainable growth in food production. These solutions will enable us to deal with the upcoming threat brought about by dramatic population growth more effectually.Fourthly, concerns over growing GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) crops are outweighed by the pressing need to prepare for a potential food crisis. Undoubtedly, it is considered as one of the innovative solutions for severe food shortage problems. The amount of GMO crops gradually increases by almost 30 million per a year to 160 million in 2011 (Talty, n.d.). Furthermore, It has considerable advantages. For instance, GMO crops will maximize the profitnd environmental controversies, no one can deny that GMO technology has an infinite possibility to tackle the upcoming food crisis. Moreover, it is regarded as only the way forward in these days. Therefore, people should seek the most effective way to keep the advantages of GMO technology and dispense with side effects at the same time.References1. • [영문] 기업의 사회적 책임, Corporate social responsibility
Corporate social responsibility(CSR)In a lot of companies’ websites, it is easy to find the term CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). CSR can be defined as a corporation’s initiatives to assess and take responsibility for the company’s effects on environmental and social wellbeing (Investopedia, n.d.). In this present day and age, the emphasis on CSR emerges as a global trend in various companies. Although it has long been viewed as the task of companies to be socially responsible, there is a dramatically growing public interest in this responsibility recently with the rising number of cases of accounting frauds, unethical management, and environmental pollution. Furthermore, George, the executive director of United Nations Global Compact, said that “there is a silent revolution happening in the world. More and more business leaders realize that financial success depends on environmental stewardship and social responsibility” (George, 2015). However, many people still claim that a buy considered as a method of acquiring a decent reputation, the overall fundamental principle of a company is the pursuit of profits remains unchanged. The companies which tend to ignore the pursuit of profits and solely focus on CSR cannot survive in the competitive market. Therefore, paradoxically, they are less likely to get a chance to carry out CSR. In this regard, Friedman (1970) who was a famous economist in the U.S.A claims that “the one social responsibility of business is to use its materials and engage in activities designed to increase its profit as long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition without deception or fraud”. However, nowadays, many entrepreneurs seem to overlook the purpose of business by overly emphasizing CSR. Representatively, the Lehman Brothers can be the best, or more appropriately, the worst case of the failure of CSR. Visser (2014) reports the Lehman Brothers, which was one of the most famous and ebut, sometimes the decision, which costs a tremendous amount of money, turns out amiss. It also frequently triggers side effects. A typical side effect of CSR is the problem of communication between a company and its customers. Even though a customer and company may view the same tactics, they may perceive it differently and it can result in unintended effects. It is also more likely to lead to massive financial losses and damage to individuals and groups. For example, Shell UK’s mishap in 1991 was the result of miscommunication and thus a failure of CSR. Shell UK, which is a large oil company in the UK, devised a plan for disposing of an old storage facility for oil in 1991. The company determined to get rid of this outdated facility to minimize damage to nature after they sufficiently examined the environmental problems which were possibly caused by this facility. But unexpectedly, serious resistance arose from an activist of Greenpeace who believed that an environmental issue would , as a result, this company was greeted by consumer backlash and boycott. This example remained as a representative failure of CSR tactic. Therefore, this case proves that CSR does not always guarantee success and shows that it is not just about what decision the company makes, but also how the populace perceives it.Thirdly, CSR unavoidably involves a gradual increase in the cost of sales. The more companies are committed to fulfilling social responsibility, the more this side effect unquestionably curtails the corporate efficiency of these companies. So, naturally it triggers a mark-up, and it will ultimately be passed on to customers. For example, Tristano (2016) said that in 2011, McDonald made a plan for only using cage-free egg by 2025. The cost of this environmental process will be a financial burden on the company. So, the company decided to raise the prices of its goods. From a corporate standpoint, the easiest way of recovering the expenditure for CSR is raising prices. this cf potential and can be a useful and essential part of business strategies. However, a company should not overlook the primary goal of a business, which is to earn profits, because it is the reward of the entrepreneur sacrificing his time and effort to run the company.References1. Galaxy S was the initial line up in Samsung Electronics when talking about this premium smartphone lineup. Taking dominating android as evidence, Samsung has a dominant global market share of approximately 20% due to its strong brand equity and a wide range of products line (Counterpoint Research, 2019).
