How I Write a PaperWriting a paper is a significant assignment for classes relating to language or history. As a student who is attending to a college preparatory school, I had to write numerous papers of different types: research, analytic, process, etc. When I write a paper, I like to keep my process organized from the beginning to the end. Instead of simply jumping right into writing, I tend to set a plan for myself and follow the guideline. Not everyone might agree with my methods.
Yu Gwan-Sun, 18 Year Old Korean MartyrChester W. Nimitz, a Fleet Admiral of the United States Navy once said, “God grant me the courage not to give up what I think is right, even though I think it is hopeless.” From August 1910 to August 1945, the Korean territory was colonized under the rule of Japan, which is considered as an unforgettable period in Korean history. The Japanese deposed Emperor Gojong and took over the sovereignty, assigning Japanese vice-ministers to take full control of the Korean government. By enforcing the Merger Treaty between Korea and Japan, Japan colonized the Korean Peninsula and the 35-year ordeal had begun. During the colonization period, Japan tried to destroy Korea’s tradition and even the identity itself: Japan not only damaged important historical remains, but also stole numbers of relics. Moreover, Japan replaced the Korean education system into a Japanese one and punished those who refused the requirements. Soon, people all around the country stood ue independence movement in her home town Cheonan, (“March First Movement”, “Japanese Colonization Period”).Yu Gwan-Sun was born on Cheonan in December 16th, 1902. She was a student of Ehwa Girls’ School when she decided to participate in the independence movement. Yu Gwan-Sun prepared the movement by handing out the document of the Declaration of Independence. She traveled from village to village not only to hand out the document, but also to inform people about the March First Movement and to encourage them to join the movement. She also visited churches, schools, and different scholars to encourage their participation (“Yu Gwan-sun, the Indefatigable Independence Fighter”, Bullimore). The movement finally took place in March 1, 1919, at Aunae market in Cheonan. Over 3,000 people gathered in the Aunae market to join the movement. It was early in the morning, but many people had came to fight for independence of Korea. When everyone gathered, Yu Gwan-Sun handed out Taegeukgi, the Koreannese did not like this at all. So, they sent in the police to stop the movement. The police killed total of 19 people, including Yu Gwan-Sun’s parents, and arrested or imprisoned the leaders of the independence movement.Yu Gwan-Sun was one of the leaders who was arrested by the Japanese police. She was tortured, questioned, and forced to stop the protest. However, Yu did not give up her courage and continued fighting for the independence of Korea. She also asserted that she herself led the March First Movement from the beginning to the end and asked the police to free the rest of the participants who were arrested. She was sent to Gongju prison for the trial. Yu Gwan-Sun contended that the Japanese had neither the rights nor the reason to hold a plea on Koreans and refused to be judged. After two trials, Yu was sentenced to three years in prison and was transferred to Seodaemun prison for further interrogation. There, she continued to shout for independence, and prepared for the demons and are not what an 18 year old girl would be able to endure: She was sexually assaulted and harassed, and was severely beaten. Still, she did not give up on what she believed was right. Suffering from the brutal tortures of the Japanese military polices, on September 28, 1920, Yu Gwan-Sun perished at the young age of 18, because of the rapture of her bladder due to the tortures she had to endure. Nowadays, Yu Gwan-Sun is titled as a patriotic martyr and is recognized as one of the most significant people who have contributed in forming the country that we live in right now (“Yu Gwan-sun, the Indefatigable Independence Fighter”, “3.1 Independence Movement”, “Japanese Colonization Period”, “March First Movement”, Hannah Kim). The life of Yu Gwan-Sun always makes me look back at my own life and question myself what I would be able to do for others, and how could I help other people. Yu Gwan-Sun could have chosen not to join the March First Movement, she could have chosen to stay safe, anrotest to bring independence in the Korean territory would not have occurred. This can also mean that my own country might have remained as a colony of Japan. I always thought that moral courage is simply helping others as I sacrifice something of my own. But, Yu has shown what true moral courage is by not giving up believing what she thought to be right even in the brutal moments that she had to go through and the risk of losing her own life. Her life taught me that being able to totally sacrifice oneself for the benefit of other people and to help others sincerely is true moral courage."3.1 Independence Movement." Terms.naver.com. Despite the appearance of myself today, I can’t think of any other word that would most accurately define me then ‘athletic’. Most people think of being fit, strong, and muscular when they see the word athletic. However, the word also defines a person who is related to sports and athletes. As an athlete who can play soccer, tennis, basketball, baseball, and most other sports that uses a ball, I am proud to call myself athletic. My first athletic experience started when I started to learn to play soccer at the age of eight. It simply started as a group of class organized by me and my parents through handing out flyers within our apartment complex. The class only consisted few of my friends but it grew pretty fast in it size as the class became more popular. Eventually we gained enough people to actually organize a team to compete in a tournament. Even though the results weren’t to our favor, it was still a great experience which enlarged my interest in the sport. This led to my soccer career throughout middle school all the way to high school. I was able to make the school team and compete with others to win medals in several tournaments.Tennis is another sport that I was involved in for over half of my life. My first tennis lesson started at a court in our apartment complex when I was 11. I believe I had asked my parents to let me learn to play tennis since I was 10 or so, but they wouldn’t allow me because I was too short. As the year passed with a little bit of improvement in height, I was finally given permission to sign up for the lesson. Starting day 1, I knew this was the sport that I would hold on to for the rest of my life. Not only did I learn the mechanism of the sport quite fast, but also did I have quite the coaches. They taught me how to run the game and several skills that would help me lead the rally. I can’t emphasize enough how such experience helped me during my high school tennis career, for I was able to win a medal in a doubles meet in my sophomore year. With such various athletic experiences, I was given the benefit of not having any troubles with making friends and adapting to a new environment. I not only have moved to different provinces within the country many times, but also have I studied in the United States for 6 years. I can’t say the change was a piece of cake, however, I strongly believe that the athletic experience that I have accumulated since my youth had a great influence in making the process a lot easier than what others would have gone through.
