One of most famous cosmetic companies, “The Body Shop,” is known for its Against Animal Test(AAT). This company emphasizes that it does not conduct cosmetic tests on animals, but instead uses vegetarian ingredients (The Body Shop International Plc, Against Animal Testing). Due to this “Green marketing”, many customers who are interested in the environmental movement like to use items from this company. Some customers insist that animal experiments should be banned by law. Cosmetic products may not affect our health directly, but what if when scientists research new medicines for an incurable disease, such as AIDS? Would it be safe to prescribe this medicine to patients without animal research? According to Rickard, the benefits of animal research are tangible and contribute not only to human well-being, but also to the welfare of animals (1079). The benefits to humans can be divided into three parts, improved health, increased productivity, and scientific knowledge (Rickard 1080). Furthermore, some increases in livestock productivity are related to the perceived welfare of animals (in Rickard 1081). Moreover, the use of animals in research is regulated by scientists spontaneously, and the number of scientists using animals is decreasing annually (United States, 2006 Report on Enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act 11). Therefore, animal research should not be controlled by strict laws.
