21세기는 '문화의 세기'라고 불릴 만큼 소프트 파워(Soft Power)의 중요성이 국가 경쟁력의 핵심 요소로 부상한 시기이다. 세계화(Globalization)와 디지털 혁명(Digital Revolution)은 국경을 초월한 상호 연결성을 강화시켰으며, 이는 정치, 경제, 사회적 차원에서 이질적인 문화 간의 충돌과 융합을 가속화하고 있다. 이러한 거시적 흐름 속에서 대한민국은 지난 반세기 동안 전례 없는 속도로 산업화와 민주화를 동시에 달성하며 '한강의 기적'이라는 경제적 성취를 이루어냈다. 그러나 이러한 압축 성장은 전통적인 유교적 가치관과 서구의 합리주의적, 개인주의적 가치관이 혼재된 독특하고도 복합적인 사회 문화적 지형을 형성하게 되었다.1

현대 한국 사회는 급격한 가치관의 변동 속에 놓여 있다. 기성세대가 중시하던 집단주의와 위계질서는 MZ세대(밀레니얼+Z세대)의 부상과 함께 공정성, 개인의 자율성, 워라밸(Work-Life Balance)을 중시하는 새로운 가치관과 충돌하고 있다. 또한, 초저출산, 고령화, 사회적 양극화, 젠더 갈등과 같은 사회적 난제들은 단순한 정책적 접근을 넘어 한국 사회의 기저에 깔린 심층적인 문화적 코드를 이해하지 않고서는 해결의 실마리를 찾기 어려운 상황이다.3 따라서 한국인의 사고방식과 행동 양식을 지배하는 '마음의 소프트웨어(Software of the Mind)'를 해독하는 작업은 한국 사회의 현재를 진단하고 미래를 조망하기 위한 필수적인 과제라 할 수 있다.
