원격교육은 매체와 기술이 발전함에 따라 인쇄매체, 방송매체, 오디오 및 비디오 텔레컨퍼런스를 거쳐 컴퓨터 컨퍼런스, 그리고 웹 기반 이러닝 및 스마트러닝을 사용하기에 이르렀다. 특히, COVID-19 팬데믹시대를 거치면서 원격교육의 디지털 전환이 기하급수적으로 확장되고 가속화되었다. 이와 더불어 인공지능, 몰입형 가상현실, 블록체인과 NFT와 같은 4차 산업혁명의 초연결 초지능 초융합 기술을 접목한 K-12교육, 고등교육, 그리고 평생교육 분야까지 전방위적으로 원격교육에 대한 연구, 적용 및 도입이 활성화되었다(박아람, 이참, 2023).
미래 원격교육은 앞서 언급한 기술의 고도화와 함께 그 학습환경의 변화가 점진적으로 이뤄질 것으로 예상된다. 학습은 인터넷을 사용할 수 있는 어디에서나 이뤄질 수 있기에, 정규교육의 경계가 모호해지고(김태완, 2015), 전 세계 고등교육 기관의 네트워크에서 원격교육을 통한 방법으로 학력 취득 등이 더욱 용이해질 것이라고 예견되기도 한다. 직업이나 역량, 실생활의 문제를 해결하고, 일상생활의 필요에 따른 개인화된 평생교육의 개념이 강조될 것이다(Kilag et al., 2023; Bozkurt et al., 2023). 이에 본 과제에서는 앞으로 더욱 고도화될 매체 및 기술의 발전에 따라 변화할 미래 원격교육의 모습에 대한 시나리오를 학습환경과 학습자를 구체적으로 설정하여 제시하고자 한다.
