본문내용
Linguistic Anthropology refers to an anthropological study of various sociolinguistic phenomena as a subfield of Sociolinguistics. Started with the purpose of studying the language of Early Native Americans, it was developed into ethnography of communication which observes social factors related to language use and speech event, aiming at specific speech community. Linguistic Anthropology started in the early twenty century by Franz Boas. He put stress on language as a research method, and asserted that it is impossible to study specific society without the language. His opinion became an important research topic by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf, who developed it into Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis which aroused controversy between Linguistic Determinism and Linguistic Relativity in our days. In this paper I will talk about sociolinguistics and the controversy between Linguistic Determinism and Linguistic Relativity, both of which are derived from the subfield Linguistic Anthropology. In addition, I will support my arguments by two methods, folklore and address forms.
