-KCCI urges more purchases of 'Environment Mark' goods

The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) yesterday demanded that the government sharply expand its *procurement of environment-friendly products carrying the *so-called "Environment Mark."
The Environment Mark system was created in Korea a decade ago in a government *bid to encourage the production and consumption of environmentally friendly goods.
But the system has failed to gain broad support so far, with the government procurements of Environment Mark-bearing goods amounting to *merely 87 billion won ($70.7 million) of the total of 800 billion won last year.
"In addition to expanded procurements, the government is required to sharply increase incentives for the environment-friendly products," said a KCCI official. "Government agencies should also be given certain procurement *obligations for the Environment Mark goods," he said.
