I. 서론
최근 벤처기업의 중요성에 관한 논의가 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 그 이유는 한국경제가 노동집약적이고 성숙기술 중심의 산업구조로부터 탈피하여 기술집약적인 고부가가치 산업위주의 구조로 전환할 필요성이 커지고 있기 때문이다. 한국의 벤처기업은 1996년말 기준으로 약 1,500여개가 있는 것으로 추정되고 있다. 이들의 매출액은 9조원, 그리고 종업원수는 7만명으로 중소기업에서 차지하는 비중을 개략적으로 보면, 업체수는 약 1.5%, 매출액은 약 5%, 종업원수는 약 3%를 점유하고 있는 것으로 나타나고 있다(이장우, 1997-a).

벤처기업은 주로 첨단기술 산업을 중심으로 기술개발과 혁신을 통해 고수익을 달성하고자 하는 특성을 갖는다. 이에 따라 벤처기업은 기술개발, 고용창출, 그리고 국내외적으로 경쟁력 확보를 통해 경제성장에 공헌하는 주요 원천이 되고 있다(Vesper, 1980; Timmons & Bygrave, 1986; Cooper, Willard, & Woo, 1986; McMullan & Vesper, 1987; Kichoff & Phillips, 1988). 그러나, 모든 벤처기업들이 기술혁신과 직업창출의 원천이 되고 있는 것은 아니다. 즉 상대적으로 소수의 혁신적이고 진취적인 벤처기업들이 급진적 기술혁신과 신규직업의 창출을 주도하는 경향이 있다.

III. 사례조사
1. 사례대상기업과 연구방법
우리나라에서 벤처기업에 관한 연구는 이제 시작단계라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 연구상황을 감안하여 사례조사를 통한 탐색적 연구를 하고자 한다. 이때 사례조사는 복수의 성공벤처기업들을 대상으로 하였다. 이때 성공벤처기업이란 대기업을 모태로 하지 않고 새로운 기술적 아이디어를 기반으로 사업화를 도모한 기술창업형 벤처기업 중에서 국내시장에서 지배적인 시장점유율을 확보하고 있고 현재 수입대체 뿐만 아니라 순수 국내기술에 의한 세계시장 진출의 가능성이나 실적이 분명한 기업으로 국내외 경쟁업체들과 비교했을 때 독자적인 생존기반을 마련한 기업을 의미한다.
