환경인문학으로서의 여행문학의 가능성 (Possibility of Travel Literature as Environmental Humanities)

초록

이 글은 환경인문학이 지향해야 할 교양 글쓰기 이론 구축에 관한 시론이다. 여행문학의 사례를 통해 살펴본다는 점이 특색이다. 환경인문학으로서의 여행문학은 학제적 연구가 가능한 분야이며, 감각을 통합적으로 경험하는 글쓰기 훈련이 가능하다. 즉 여행문학은 환경인문학적 특성이 강하다.
이런 환경인문학은 융합의 인문학이다. 생태환경 요소를 소재로만 다루지 않는다. 문학과 철학, 문학과 역사, 고전소설과 현대시 사이를 잇는 환경인문학의 담론을 창의적으로 디자인하는 게 가능하다. 이 글은 볼프강 쉬벨부쉬의 『철도 여행의 역사-철도는 시간과 공간을 어떻게 변화시켰는가?』(1977), 가라타니 고진의 『일본 근대문학의 기원』(2010), 정진국의 『여행가방속의 책』(2011)을 통해 여행문학의 다양한 가능성을 살펴본다. 이 책들의 핵심을 차례로 정리하면 다음과 같다. ‘철도 여행은 사람들의 인식을 어떻게변화시키는가’, ‘풍경이란 내적 인간inner man이 바라보는 외부 세계’, ‘여행 작가들에 대한 새로운 형태의 평전’ 등이다.
저자가 직접 체험한 여행 체험이 분석 대상이 된 점도 이 글의 특성이다.
이탈리아의 살리나 섬과 프랑스의 피작 여행 체험을 통해 시지각 위주의 글쓰기를 극복하는 통합감각의 새로운 가능성을 소개한다. 서정주의 산문에서 통합감각을 발견한 점도 이 글의 새로운 면모다.
‘풍경의 재발견’은 환경인문학으로서의 여행문학이 지향해야 할 미덕이다. 오감을 모두 동원하는, 감각의 다변화 현상을 경험하는 게 중요하다. 과거와 현재를 잇고, 관련 텍스트를 호출하며, 자연과 사람의 관계를 심화 ․ 확장시키는 노력도 중요하다. 경험과 상상, 과거와 현재, 인접학문과 예술 가로지르기, 배경지식과 창의적 아이디어를 연결하면서 서로를 풍성하게 만들 때, 여행문학의 가능성은 더욱 크게 열린다

영어초록

This article is the beginning of a discussion to establish the liberal arts writing theory that the environmental humanities should aim for. The peculiarity of this article is that it examines the possibility of constructing a theory through the case of travel literature. Travel literature as an environmental humanities is a field where interdisciplinary research is possible, and writing training that experiences the senses in an integrated way is possible. In other words, travel literature has strong environmental humanities characteristics.
Such environmental humanities are humanities of convergence. Ecological environmental factors are not treated only as materials. It is possible to creatively design the discourse of environmental humanities that connects literature and philosophy, literature and history, classical novels and modern poetry. This article examines the various possibilities of travel literature through Wolfgang Schivelbusch's “The History of Rail Travel: How Railroads Changed Time and Space? (1977)”, “The Origin of Japanese Modern Literature (2010)” by Kojin Karatani and 『Books in a Suitcase (2011)』 by Jeong Jin-guk. The main points of these books are summarized as follows. ‘How rail travel changes people’s perceptions’, ‘Landscape is the outer world viewed by an inner man’, and ‘a new type of biography of travel writers’.
experienced is the subject of analysis. My experiences of traveling to Salina Island in Italy and Pijak in France show a new possibility of a sense of integration that overcomes visual perception-oriented writing. The discovery of a sense of unity in Seo Jeong-ju’s prose is also a new aspect of this article.
‘Rediscovery of the landscape’ is a virtue that travel literature as an environmental humanities should aim for. It is important to experience the phenomenon of diversification of the senses by mobilizing all five senses.
Efforts to connect the past and present, call out related texts, and deepen and expand the relationship between nature and people are also important. Travel literature opens up more possibilities when it enriches each other by linking experience and imagination, past and present, crossing between adjacent disciplines and art, and background knowledge and creative ideas.
