철학은 하나의 학문인가? (Is the Philsophy a Science?)

초록

철학이란 도대체 무엇인가? 이 물음은 철학이 끊임없이 묻고 있는 것이지만, 우리는 아직까지 마땅한 답을 찾지는 못하고 있다. 그런데 하이데거는 『철학 입문』에서 “철학은 하나의 학문이 아니다.”라고 주장한다. 이 주장은 대학에서 철학을 연구하며 강의하고 있는 우리를 무척 당황스럽게 만든다. 왜냐하면 우리는, 철학이 다른 학문들과 다르기는 하지만, 학문이 아니라고 파악하고 있지는 않기 때문이다. 다시 말해, 우리는 철학이 만학의 여왕이라고 막연히 짐작하여 자처하고 있다. 하지만 다른 학문들은 철학을 만학의 여왕으로 받들지는 않는다. 철학은 자칭 만학의 여왕일 뿐이다. 게다가 다른 개별학문들도 “철학은 하나의 학문이 아니다”라고 주장하고 싶을지 모른다.
하이데거에 따르면, 철학은 학문이라는 집합(유개념)에 속하는 원소(종개념)인 개별학문일 수 없기 때문에 학문이 아니다. 다시 말해, 철학은 개별학문들 가운데 가장 뛰어나서 만학의 여왕이 아니라, 개별학문들을 가능하게 하는 근원이어서 만학의 여왕이며, 그래서 개별학문들 가운데 하나가 아니다. 이와 같은 하이데거의 주장은 그의 철학이 존재와 존재자를 구별하고 존재를 탐구하는 존재론이라는 입장에서부터 비롯한다. 개별학문들은 존재자를 탐구하는데, 존재자를 탐구하기 위해서는 존재자를 존재자이도록 하는 존재를 먼저 탐구하지 않으면 안 되며, 철학이 존재를 탐구한다는 것이 하이데거의 입장이다. 이와 같은 하이데거의 입장과 주장은 철학 안에서도 논란의 여지가 있는 것이기는 하다.
하지만 “철학은 하나의 학문이 아니다”라는 하이데거의 주장은 대학에서 철학을 연구하고 강의하는 우리에게 “철학이란 도대체 무엇인가?”라는 물음에 대한 대답을 찾을 수 있는 새로운 실마리를 줄 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 연구와 강의 활동에서 우리가 무엇을 어떻게 왜 해야 하는가를 되새겨 볼 수 있는 길잡이가 될 수도 있을 것이다. 하나의 학문이 아닐 수도 있는 철학이 학문의 전당이며 학문의 공동체인 대학에서 개별학문들과 더불어 사회에 이바지할 수 있는 가능성은 대학 안에서 철학이 갖는 위상을 새롭게 규정하는 데에 놓여 있다. 왜냐하면 철학에 대한 오해는 대학 안과 밖에서 생겨나고 있으며, 심지어 철학 전공영역 안에서도 일어나고 있기 때문이다.
분업과 협업이라는 원리에 따라 대학은 학문 활동을 통해 사회의 요청에 부응해야 하는 의무를 스스로 지니고 있다. 이와 같은 사정에서 보자면, 하나의 학문이 아닐 수도 있는 철학도, 대학을 구성하고 있는 전공 영역들 가운데 하나인 한, 사회의 요청에 부응해야 한다. 철학 이론을 형성하고 철학 전문가를 양성하는 것이 사회의 요청에 대한 철학의 부응이다. 이와 같은 부응을 위해서 철학은, 비록 하이데거의 입장과 주장을 따르지는 않는다고 하더라도, 연구와 강의 활동에서 철학 입문과 철학 활동을 수행해야 한다. 철학 입문은 철학이라는 전공 영역을 위한 입문이기도 하지만, 또한 철학 활동에 대한 입문이기도 하다. 철학 활동은 철학이론을 형성하고, 형성되는 철학 이론을 바탕으로 사회에 이바지하는 것이다.
이 글에서 우리는 사회 안의 대학, 대학 안의 학문, 대학 안의 철학에 대해 일반적으로 알려진 바를 살펴보면서, 철학에 대한 하이데거의 입장과 주장을 이해하고 해석하는 가운데, 하나의 학문이 아닐 수도 있는 철학이 학문의 전당이며 학문의 공동체인 대학에서 어떤 자리를 차지해야 하며, 사회의 요청에 어떻게 부응해야 하는가를 검토하고 제시하고자 하였다.

What is the philosophy? The philosophy ask consistently this question after its birth, butan adequate answer to this question is not given yet. Heidegger asserted, in Einleitung in diePhilosophie, that the philosophy is not a science of sciences. This assertion makes us very confused,who research and lecture the philosophy in the university. Although we consider thephilosophy as a different thing from any other sciences, we don’t understand, that the philosophyis not a science of sciences. We make a hasty deduction according to the so-called traditionof philosophy, that the philosophy is the queen of sciences. But another sciences respectthe philosophy as the queen by no means! The philosophy claim itself to be a queen ofsciences. Another sciences would like to assert, “the philosophy is never a science of sciences!”According to Heidegger, the philosophy is not a science of sciences, because it is not amember of sciences. The philosophy is the queen of sciences, not for its brilliantness, but forbeing the origin of another sciences. This Heidegger’s assertion is from his own standpoint ofphilosophy, that Being(Sein) is different from beings(Seiendes), and then the philosophy isan ontology, which inquire into Being. Another sciences make researches in beings. For researchof beings, Being is firstly inquired into, because beings become for the first time itselfowing to Being. The philosophy inquire into Being, and Heidegger’s philosophy is theontology. But his own standpoint and assertion is a controversial problem in the section ofphilosophy.
Nevertheless Heidegger’s standpoint and assertion of philosophy is relevant for us, sincewe research and lecture now the philosophy in the university. His own standpoint and assertionof philosophy would give us a clue for answering to question, what is the philosophy.
And it would be a guide for us, which suggest us, what and how we may do in our researchand lecture of philosophy in the university. Although the philosophy may be not a science ofsciences, it makes a great contribution to the public with another sciences in the university, ifthe philosophy will find his proper topology among the sciences in the university. For thereare some misunderstanding and disappointment of the philosophy in the university, in thepublic, even in the philosophy itself.
The contribution of the university to the public meet requests from the public throughthe activities of research and lecture. According to this circumstances, the philosophy mustmeet to requests from the public, while it may be a member of community in the university,even though it must be a science of sciences. Formation of theories in philosophy and cultivationof professional members in the philosophy is the contribution of the philosophy to thepublic. For this contribution, the philosophy in the university must discipline itself the introductionto the philosophy and the activity of the philosophy. The introduction to the philosophyis not only an introduction to the philosophical theories but also to the philosophicalactivities.
In this paper, we will look at with attention popularly figured point of view to the universityin the public, the science in the university, the philosophy in the university. And,while understanding and interpreting Heidegger’s standpoint and assertion of philosophy, wewill investigate, which position the philosophy has in the university and how the philosophymeets to requests from the public.
