국내외 대학의 한국 문학 교재에 나타난 시 영역(英譯)의 문제 - The Columbia Anthology of Modern Korean Poetry를 중심으로 - (A Study on the English Translation of Poems in Korean Literature Textbook in Domestic and International Universities – focusing on The Columbia Anthology of Modern Korean Poetry)

초록

이 논문은 국내외 대학의 한국 문학, 특히 현대시 수업에서 교재나 자료의 출처로 많이 사용되고 있는 영역(英譯) 선집 The Columbia Anthology of Modern Korean Poetry에 수록된 김소월, 한용운, 이상, 백석, 윤동주, 서정주의 번역 시에서 ‘부적절한 번역’을 찾아낸 후 ‘적절한 번역’을 제안했다. 그 결과 단어, 구, 절, 문장 등에서 부적절하게 번역된 부분은 총 85곳이었다. 구체적으로는 부적절한 해석이 59개, 부적절한 생략이나 추가가 17개, 반복을 살리지 못한 경우가 9개, 각주가 필요한 경우가 6개, 전체적인 재번역이 필요한 시가 3편이다. 특히 이상 시 20편과 서정주 시 18편의 영역에서 각주가 필요한 부분을 제외하고도 각각 29개와 30개의 부적절한 번역이 발견되었다. 두 작품에 대한 해석과 이해가 다른 작가들에 비해 어렵다는 사실을 인정한다고 하더라도 지나치게 많은 숫자다. 이러한 번역으로 해외 대학의 학생들이나 연구자들이 이상과 서정주의 시를 제대로 이해할 수는 없을 것이다. 한국 현대시 영역에 부적절한 번역이 많은 이유는 번역자의 한국어 능력과 한국 문화 이해 능력이 부족하기 때문이다. 또한 번역자들이 앞의 이유로 인해 시를 정확하게 해석하지 못함에도 불구하고 대부분 단독으로 번역을 진행했기 때문이다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 장기적으로 전문 번역자들을 양성하고 번역자와 한국 문학 전문가가 공동으로 번역하는 번역 공동체를 설립할 필요가 있다. 단기적으로는 현재 교재로 사용되는 영역 선집의 부적절한 번역을 점검하고 수정함으로써 해외 대학의 학생들과 연구자들이 더 적절한 번역을 접할 수 있도록 해야 한다.

영어초록

This paper examined the English translations of poems by Kim Sowol, Han Yongun, Lee Sang, Paek Seok, Yoon Dongju, Seo Cheongju in The Columbia Anthology of Modern Korean Poetry frequently used as a textbook or source book for Korean literature and modern Korean poetry class in domestic and international universities and suggested new translations for inappropriate translations. There were about 85 inappropriate translations for words, phrases, paragraphs and sentences: 59 inappropriate interpretations, 17 inappropriate ellipsis and supplements, 9 translations which could not represent repetitions, 6 translations that need footnote, and 3 poems needed to be completely retranslated. Among 20 and 19 poems by Lee Sang and Seo Jeongju from the anthology, there were 29 and 30 inappropriate translations each. Though their poems are well-know for the difficulty of interpretation and understanding, 29 and 30 inappropriate translations are too many that students and researchers of international universities would not be able to understand their poem correctly. Most of these inappropriate translations are related to Korean proficiency level of and understanding of Korean culture by translators. They are mostly non-Koreans and translated poems alone not with the help from researchers of modern Korean poetry. To solve these problems, there should be more professional translators of Korean literature into English and we should establish translation communities in which professional translators and researchers work together for the more appropriate translations. But in the short term, more appropriate translations are to be offered to students and researchers of international universities so that they could understand modern Korean poems more correctly.
