문학 장르로서의 옛이야기 (Old Story As a Genre of Literature)

초록

문학 현장 일각에서 ‘옛이야기’가 일종의 장르 용어처럼 자주 쓰이고 있다. 옛이야기는 우선 민속학이나 구비문학의 설화(민담을 중심으로 한 설화)를 우리 일상어로 대신하는 친근한 표현이자 옛날이야기를 간명하게 다듬어 쓴 표현으로 보인다.
옛이야기를 옛날이야기와는 논리적으로 구분하는 견해도 있다. 이 견해에 의하면‘옛날에 대한 이야기’인 옛날이야기와 달리 옛이야기는 ‘이야기 자체가 옛것’인 이야기로, 장르 용어에 적합한 쪽은 옛이야기이다. 옛이야기를 ‘어린이를 위한 설화’라는 의미의 문학 장르 용어로 삼자는 제안이 있는데, 이에 대해서는 설화에 어린이라는 의미가 별개로 담겨 있지 않다며 이의가 제기된다. 민담은 분명히 세대 구분 없이 모두가 향유하고 전승한 구비문학이다. 옛이야기는 이야기 자체가 옛것인 이야기로서가 아니라 전근대의 구전 민담(oral folk tale)과 근대의 전래동화(literary fairy tale)를 아우를 수 있는 장르로 개념을 확장해야 할 필요가 있다. 그리고 어른에게도 열린 장르가 되어야 폭넓은 향유층을 확보할 가능성을 스스로 막지 않게 된다. 옛이야기는 받아써서 보존할 수 있는 것만이 아니다. 그것은 지나간 시대 민중의 세계인식과 소망이 버무려진 목소리에 귀 기울인 다음 떠올려 쓰고, 다시 쓰고, 고쳐 쓰고,새로 쓸 수 있는, 온갖 이야기의 원형이자 장르이고 또 현재진행형의 개별 작품이기도 하다. 구전 민담과 그것의 속성 및 가치를 현대적으로 계승한 나라 안팎의 모든서사문학을 문학 현장 상황에 맞춰 때로는 각각을 또 때로는 전체를 지칭할 수 있는개념의 장르 용어로 ‘옛이야기’를 제안한다

영어초록

In certain literary sites, ‘old story’ is often used as a kind of genre vocabulary. First of all, it looks as if an old story is a familiar expression that rendered tales (folk tale oriented tales) of folklore or oral literature in everyday language or an expression that rephrased old-days story in a simple and clear language.
There are views that logically separate an old story from old-days story. According to this view, an old story denotes a story in which ‘the story itself is old’, unlike old-days story that denote a ‘story on the old days’. The one that is more appropriate for a genre vocabulary is the former or old story. There are also suggestions that we should take an old story as a literary genre vocabulary to mean ‘tales for the children'. But objections are raised on the ground that tales contain no separate entity that could mean children.
Clearly, folk tale is an oral literature that is enjoyed and transmitted by everyone regardless of generational difference.
Old story needs to expand its concept into a genre that can encompass pre-modern oral folk tales and modern literary fairy tales, not just as stories that are old themselves. At the same time, it should be an open genre for adults as well, not to preclude a possibility of securing a broad-based audience voluntarily. Old story involves much more than what can be dictated for preservation. It is the original form and genre of myriad stories that can be written, re-written, revised, and newly written after listening to the voice that is mingled with world awareness and wishes of the people of the bygone age and reminding us to write on them, or it is individual works that are still being written.
For this reason, I would like to propose ‘old story’ as a genre vocabulary for a concept that can indicate oral folk tale and all the narrative literature that inherited their properties and values modernistically, both within Korea and abroad, either as individually or in its entirety depending on particular circumstances of literary sites.
