초록

유럽에서 중세라고 불리는 역사의 시기는, 서구 사람 스스로도 ‘암흑기’라고 부를 정도로 부정적인 시각으로 인식된다. 이는 중세라는 시기가 종교가 모든 것을 지배하였고, 따라서 근대사회의 계몽주의적 시각에서 바라볼 경우 중세는 미개하고, 불합리한 시대로 이해되었기 때문이다. 그러나 계몽주의라는 빛의 이름으로 등장한 근대사회가 암흑의 시기로 단죄했던 중세이지만, 다른 한 편으로 중세의 유럽은 그리스도교라는 보편주의 이념과 문화를 유럽사회 전체에 뿌리 깊게 새겨 놓았다. 이처럼 중세 사회는 그리스도교적 정체성을 통해 유럽사회 전체의 문화적 통일성을 그 특성으로 만들어 갔지만, 다른 한편으로 또 다른 유럽적 특성의 하나인 다원주의적 전통의 토대가 되기도 하였다. 이와 같이 중세 유럽의 특징으로 자리 잡은 ‘다양성 속에서의 일치’라는 개념은 이후 중세가 몰락할 때까지 그리스도교 문화가 중심이 되었던 유럽 사회 이끌어 가는 이념으로 작용하였다. 이러한 중세적 사회 질서, 특성은 유럽 사회가 국가주의적 분절과 대립의 패러다임으로 고착화되어 가던 근대사회에서도 완전히 사라지지 않고, 하나의 대안적 사회질서의 틀로 지속적으로 제기되어 왔으며, 현대에 이르러 유럽의 통합이라는 현실적 과제 속에서 통합의 토대와 추진력으로 작용하였다. 이 처럼 다양성과 통일성은 중세 유럽 사회를 설명하는 중심이 되는 개념이며, 이 두 특성이 하나로 조화를 이루어 유럽적 특성으로 자리 잡은 것이 바로 중세의 역사이다. 이렇게 볼 때 중세라는 시기는 암흑기로 단절된 역사로서가 아니라 역사의 한 층으로서 과거를 새로운 방향으로 변화시키고, 이를 토대로 근대 및 현대의 역사가 자라나는 연속성의 시각에서 새롭게 조망되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

In Europe, the historical period called as the Medieval Age has been recognized in somewhat negative sense to the extent that Westerners themselves named it ‘a dark age.’ That is because religion ruled out all the things in the Middle Ages and thus the Middle Ages was in itself understood as an uncivilized and irrational period of time. Though the Medieval Ages was stigmatized as the Dark Ages by the Modern Society that emerged with such a shining name as the Enlightenment, medieval Europe, on the other hand, deeply inscribed the Universalistic ideology and culture - that is the Christianity - on the entire European society. Likewise, the medieval society had been featuring the cultural uniformity of the entire European society through the Christian identity. On the other hand, it also became a base of pluralistic tradition that could be an another element of European cultural characteristics. Similarly, the notion of ‘uniformity within diversity’ had been playing an important role as a leading ideology of the European society of which the Christian culture was placed at the center until the Medieval Ages had completely faded away. These main characteristics and social orders of the Medieval Ages had never completely disappeared even in the modern society in which the European society began to take a paradigm of nationalistic segmentation and confrontation and thus had been continuously raised as a possible framework for alternative social order. Even in the contemporary period of time, they became to function as a fundamental base and driving force of regional integration in conjunction with the real agenda for European regional integration. As aforementioned, diversity and uniformity are two contrasting concepts that can well explain the pith of the Medieval European society. It is the very history of the Medieval Ages that the two characteristics were in a perfect harmony and thus developed into a uniform feature of the European society. In this aspect, the period of the Medieval Ages must not be dealt with as such a fragmented history as the Dark Ages. Instead, it needs to be newly positioned with the notion of continuity in which it could change the past as a layer of history into a new direction and thus the history of the modern and contemporary ages newly sprout.
