경제 불확실성 지수 변화 예측에 관한 연구 -미국경제를 대상으로- (A Study on the Prediction of Changes in the Economic Uncertainty Indexes - Focusing on the analysis of the US economy)

초록

본 연구에서는 경제 불확실성 변화 예측에 관한 연구에 대한 현실적 어려움으로, 대안적인 연구로 경제 불확실성 지수의 변화에 대한 예측연구를 진행하였다. 경제 불확실성 지수로는 현재 학계에서 많이 이용되고 설명력 있다고 검증된 Jurado et al.(2015) Baker et al.(2016), Bekaert et al. (2019)의 방법에 의해 구축된 세 가지 경제 불확실성 지수를 사용하였다. 이들을 예측하는 변수로 사용한 것은 기간스프레드(Term Spread)에서 추출한 기간프리미엄(Term Premium)을 사용하였다. 기간프리미엄(Term Premium)은 미래 기간에 있어서의 불확실성에 대한 시장의 예측정보를 담고 있기 때문에 이를 사용해 경제 불확실성 지수의 변화를 예측이 가능할 것이라는 가설을 세우고 이를 검증하는 작업을 진행하였다. 표본 내 실험(In Sample Test)와 표본 외 실험(Out of Sample Test)으로 나누어 실험한 결과, 표본 내 실험에서는 기간프리미엄(Term Premium)이 세 가지 지수변화 모두에 대해 유의한 설명력을 지닌 것으로 확인되었으나, 표본 외 실험을 통한 본격적인 예측력 검정에서는 Jurado et al.(2015) Bekaert et al. (2019)에 의해 구축된 경제 불확실성 지수 변화에 대해서만 통계적으로 유의한 예측력을 가지는 것으로 나타났다

영어초록

Economic uncertainty is invisible, but it is clearly present, having a negative impact on the economy. After the global economy is closely related, economic uncertainty that has occurred in one country is rapidly transferring to major countries around the world as well as other countries. From early, the academia has been studying the effects of economic uncertainty. However, there was a limit to the empirical analysis of this. This is because it is difficult to measure economic uncertainty as it is a latent variable. Recently, however, Jurado et al. (2015), Baker et al. (2016), and Bekaert et al. (2019) have published methods for measuring economic uncertainty in the academic community, and the verification of many scholars recognizes that the economic uncertainty indexes measured by these three methods very effectively reflect the economic uncertainty of the reality. Judging if the economic uncertainty indexes can be predicted in advance, the economic loss can be reduced by taking proactive measures or changing the portfolio before economic uncertainty increases in this study, we tested the predictive power of the Term Spread, which judged that it provides statistically significant information to changes in the economic uncertainty indexes.
Thinking that if we predict changes in these three economic uncertainty indexes, which are known to best reflect economic uncertainty, it is possible to predict some degree of economic uncertainty, we have been working on finding variables that give significant information in predicting changes in the three uncertainty indexes.
In this study, the predictive power of the Term Spread was verified by thinking that the Term Spread provides statistically significant information on the changes in all three indexes. In both sample test and out of sample, the Term Spread was found to provide very effective information to the prediction of changes in Jurado et al. (2015) and Bekaert et al. (2019) among the three economic uncertainty indexes, and the predictive power of the economic uncertainty indexes by Baker et al. (2016) was found to be relatively low.
