형이상학적 죄로서 무병 - 현기영의 목마른 신들 읽기 - (Shamanistic Initiatory Illness as a Metaphysical Guilt: Reading Hyun Ki-Young’s 'the Thirsty Spirits')

필자는 이행기 정의의 관점에서 현기영의 소설집 『마지막 테우리』에 실린 두 개의 작품 「목마른 신들」과 「쇠와 살」을 검토하였다. 「목마른 신들」은 제주4.3사건에서 학살당한 자와 학살자 간에 화해를 다루었고, 「쇠와 살」은 일종의 르포소설로서 4.3사건의 작은 일화들을 엮어서 4.3의 전모를 드러냈다. 필자는 「목마른 신들」을 분석하는데 형이상학적 죄, 지속가능한 화해, 책임의 상속이라는 관념을 활용하였다. 우선 작가와 무당, 그리고 가해자의 손자의 의식을 형이상학적 죄로 해명하였다. 형이상학적 죄는 나치범죄에 대한 독일인의 책임을 해명하기 위해 야스퍼스가 도입한 극한적 개념이다. 형이상학적 죄의 근거는 악행에 연루됨이 아니라 희생자와 운명을 함께 하지 못함에 있다. 그것은 도덕적인 잘못에 기초한 죄가 아니라 일종의 부채감이며, 흔히 살아남은 자의 죄책감으로 나타난다. 이러한 죄책감이 우울증으로만 머문다면 자기파괴를 유발할 소지가 크다. 작가는 죄책감을 무병의 용광로 속에서 화해의 에너지로 승화시키면서 죄의 정치를 펼친다. 가해자의 손자는 귀신들림을 통해 할아버지의 죄를 상속하고 혼령이 제시한 해법으로서 제사봉사가 피해자와 가해자간의 화해를 공고하게 만든다. 억울한 혼령과 가해자간의 개별적 화해가 국지주의의 덫에 빠질 우려도 있으나 작가는 백조일손지지라는 판타지 속에서 이러한 우려를 불식시킨다. 「목마른 신들」은 이행기 정의의 기본 원칙들을 문학적으로 합당하게 형상화하였다.

영어초록

This essay reviews two short stories “The Thirsty Spirits” and “Iron and Flesh” by Ki-young Hyun from the perspective of transitional justice. I use the concept of metaphysical guilt, sustainable reconciliation and inheritance of responsibility as analytic tools. “The Thirsty Spirits” tries to make reconciliation between the spirit of the slaughtered and a member of the evildoing group in Jeju 4.3 Massacre, and “Iron and Flesh” is composed of fragmentary stories which discloses the total truth of Jeju 4.3 massacre.
I illuminate the internal side of the novelist Hyun, the shaman and the grandson of the wrongdoer, under the concept of the metaphysical guilt. K. Jaspers explained the responsibility of the ordinary Germans in relation to the Nazis crimes on the basis of the metaphysical guilt immediately after the Second World War. The survivor's guilt as the metaphysical guilt is feared to cause self-destruction, unless it would be changed into the positive political aspiration for the transformation of human relations and societal structure. I define the shamanistic initiatory illness as a purgatory for the mental purification which sublimates melancholy of the metaphysically or morally guilty into the will and capability of reconciliation.
The novelist Hyun develops a politics of guilt and reconciliation through a restoration of the relations between the victim and the offender. The Shaman as a mediator solves the problem of being possessed with a ghost of the innocent and paved the way for the sustainable reconciliation against the background of the inheritance of responsibility. But the personal reconciliation and political reconciliation should be clearly differentiated. It will be argued that the collective reconciliation including the political transformation be more reliable than the personal reconciliation based upon exchange of private emotions in the post-conflict society. In the concluding story-telling, the shaman develops fully the mystic meaning of fantasy of the Baek-jo-il-son-ji-ji and envisions the power of solidarity to realize the peaceful world. I conclude that Hyun realizes appropriately the principle of the transitional justice.
