초록

본고는 근우회 이후 기독교 여성들의 운동이 어떤 방향으로 변화되었는지를 살펴봄으로써 일제강점기 여성들이 전개했던 운동을 새롭게 평가할 수 있는 실마리를 제공하기 위해 기획되었다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다.
기독교 여성들은 근우회 해체 이후 두 가지 방향, 즉 교회 제도권 밖에서는 농촌계몽운동과 절제운동을 전개했으며, 교회 제도권 안에서는 여성참정권을 획득하기 위한 운동에 많은 노력을 기울였다. 이들이 이러한 운동으로 갈 수 있었던 배경에는 첫째, 전국적인 기독교 여성 조직의 결성을 들 수 있다. 교회 밖에서는 YWCA 연합회를 장로교와 감리교 여성들이 합동하여 1923년에 조직하였으며, 기독교 여성들은 이를 바탕으로 민족운동과 여성운동을 함께 병행해 나갔다. 이러한 운동을 주도한 것은 대부분 경성에 거주하던 여성들이었다. 한편 교회 내부에서는 감리교와 장로교의 여성들이 각각 전국적인 조직을 결성하였다. 감리교 북감리교에서는 1920년, 남감리교에서는 1924년 전국적인 조직을 만들어냈다. 장로교에서는 1928년 전국 여전도회(女傳道會) 창립총회를 개최함으로써 여성들만의 조직을 결성하였다. 이러한 전국적인 조직의 결성은 여성들에게 각 지역 간에 정보를 교환함으로써 보다 더 나은 방향으로 나아갈 수 있는 토대가 되었다. 그리고 여성들의 문제를 보다 더 쉽게 공유할 수 있도록 해 주었다.
둘째로는 국외 여성참정권운동에 대한 경성 여성들의 자각과 인식을 들 수 있다. 1920년대부터 국외 여성참정권 운동가 및 운동의 양상들이 국내에 소개됨으로써 경성 여성들은 이를 둘러싸고 담론을 전개하였다. 기독교 여성들은 이에 많이 고무되었다. 세 번째로는 1920년대 경성 중심에서 전국적인 여성운동으로의 확대와 경험을 들 수 있다. 그중 대표적인 경험은 근우회운동의 경험이었다. 근우회 운동은 1928년 중반 이후 전국적인 규모로 확대되어갔다. 한편으로 근우회를 참가했던 기독교 여성들은 사회주의 여성들이 지향하던 운동노선과 맞지는 않았지만 많은 영향과 자극을 받았다. 이 운동에 참가했던 경험이 1930년대 기독교 여성들이 교회 제도권에 저항할 수 있는 자각과 힘을 길러주었다.
이러한 배경 하에 1930년대에 들어서면서 기독교 여성들은 그동안 경성 중심에서 농촌 중심으로 운동을 확대해 나가고 교회 내부에서는 여성참정권운동을 전개하였다. 교회 밖에서 전개한 농촌계몽운동과 절제운동은 여성들의 힘을 강화하기 위한 방편이었으며, 더 많은 사람들이 이 운동에 지지하도록 하기 위한 방법 중의 하나였다. 교회 밖에서는 이러한 운동을 전개한 반면에, 교회 내부에서는 여성참정권운동을 벌여나갔다. 당시 국가가 없는 상황에서 기독교 여성들이 가부장적인 체제에 대해 항의할 수 있는 유일한 조직은 교회였다. 밖에서는 어쩔 수 없이 민족운동과 여성운동을 병행해 나갈 수 밖에 없었으나, 내부에서는 가부장적인 체제에 저항하였던 것이다. 결국 이러한 운동의 경험이 해방 이후 여성의회진출운동으로 계승되었다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The present study purposed to examine in what direction Christian women’s movements had been promoted since Geunwoohoe(근우회) and to provide clues for new evaluation of women’s movements under the rule of Japanese imperialism. The results of this study are as follows.
Since the disorganization of Geunwoohoe, Christian women’s movements were executed largely in two directions, namely, rural enlightenment movements and temperance movements outside the church and movements for acquiring women’s suffrage inside the church. The background of these movements is, first, the formation of Christian women’s nationwide organizations. Outside the church, YWCA was organized in 1923 jointly by the Presbyterian Church and the Methodist Church, and based on the organization Christian women waged national movements and women’s movements. These movements were led mostly by women in Gyeongseong. On the other hand, women in the Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church organized their own nationwide organizations within the church. The Northern Methodist Church launched a nationwide organization in 1920, and the Southern Methodist Church did in 1924. The Presbyterian Church held the general meeting on the foundation of the National Presbyterion Women Oraganization in 1928, which was exclusively for women. Such national organizations enabled the exchange of information among women in different regions and oriented women’s movements toward desirable directions. What is more, they facilitated the sharing of problems in women.
Second, women in Gyeongseong were awakened to movements for women’s suffrage in foreign countries. From the 1920s, the overseas trends of women’s suffrage movements were transmitted to Korea, and women in Gyeongseong began to discuss the issue. Christian women were highly inspired by such movements. Third, during the 1920s, women’s movements started from Gyeongseong spread throughout the country and experienced by many women. A representative case was the Geunwoohoe Movement. The Geunwoohoe Movement was expanded to the whole country since the middle of the year 1928. On the other hand, Christian women who joined Geunwoohoe were highly influenced and motivated although their purpose was discrepant from the line of movements pursued by socialist women. Experience in this movement strengthened Christian women’s awakening and their resistance to church institutions in the 1930s.
Entering the 1930s with this background, Christian women’s movements moved their center from Gyeongseong to farm villages, and women’s suffrage movement was promoted in the church. Rural enlightenment movements and temperance movements outside the church were for gaining support to this movement from more people. While these movements were executed outside the church, women’s suffrage movement was promoted inside the church. As there was no state, the church was the only institution through which Christian women could stand against the patriarchal system. Women could not help conducting both national movements and women’s movement outside the church, but they resisted the patriarchal system inside. After all, these movements were inherited by the movement for women’s advance to the National Assembly after the liberation.
