초록

그동안 선진국을 중심으로 실시되어온 미디어 교육에는 언어 리터러시를 비롯하여 시각 리터러시, 텔레비전 리터러시, 컴퓨터 리터러시, 넷트웹 리터러시, 정보 리터러시, 테크놀로지 리터러시, 문화 리터러시 등이 있다. 멀티미디어 시대, 특히 인터넷으로 세계가 연결되고 텍스트뿐만아니라 동영상까지도 컴퓨터 상에서 받아 볼 수 있고 Web-TV나 Internet-TV가 상용화 단계에 있는 이 때에, 이들 미디어 리터러시 교육도 통합적이며 총체적으로 이루어져야 한다는 필요성을 인식하게 된다. 따라서 본 연구 논문에서는 멀티리터러시(muliliteracy)라는 이름아래 다중 미디어(multiple media)에 대한 교육이 이루어지기를 제안한다.우리나라에서는 언어 리터러시와 컴퓨터 리터러시가 진행되어 왔을 뿐, 다른 리터러시 교육이 실시되지 않았으며 현재 단계적으로 실시되고 있는 제7차 교육과정에도 포함되어 있지 않다. 미디어 교육이란 단순히 미디어를 사용할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 이를 사고의 도구, 탐구의 도구, 커뮤니케이션의 도구로 활용할 수 있도록 교육시키는 것이다. 미디어 교육을 실시할 때에는 미디어, 테크놀로지, 그리고 교수법을 고려하여야 한다. 접근 방법에 있어서는 탐구 기저 교육, 학습자 중심 학습, 협동 학습, 문제 해결 학습, 표준 학력 검사와는 다른 방법의 평가, 그리고 통합교과과정으로서의 운영이 필요하다.미디어 교육이 중요한 이유는 비판적 사고력을 길러 줄 수 있으며, 다각적인 견해에 접할 수 있어 민주주의 사회에 필수적인 다원주의와 합리성, 그리고 통찰력을 기르는 요체가 되기 때문이다. 그러므로 미디어 교육은 학교, 가정, 사회 등 어느 곳에서나 평생동안 계속적으로 진행되어야 한다.

Media Education has been conducted since 1960s under virous names: visual literacy, television Iiteracy, computer literacy, network literacy, informat.ion literacy, and technology literacy. In the past, it has been carried out mostly in conjunction with language education or arts education. It was neither an independent subject nor a core subject. Today, however,there is a new, compelling need for media literacy, need for a new interpretation, and need for a charge in approaching to media education. A possible response to these needs is integrating several literacies as “multiliteracies, " since some literacies are closely ∞mpatibleand provide common foundation for research and practice.There is an increasing evidence that educators, parents, and policy makers have at last begun to recognize the role that media plays and the impact that media gives in shaping the way young people think, act, and learn. Educators began to respond to media education by providing instructior intervention including critical and creative thinking, viewing, and listening skills. As media education gains momentum in the United States, Canada, Australia and many other countries, media education has been mandat때 K-12 in many leading ∞m띠es around the world. However, in Korea, media education is not included in the 7th Curriculum that started to be implemented this year and will be completed in the year of 2004.The purpose of this study is to provide full understanding of the present scope and the domain of meclia education. The “mainstream" of media education used consist of mass media based communication and pedagogy. Due to reænt developments of technolqgy and their proliferation as new technology tooIs in our society, the identìfied thee mapjor, components of media OOucation are media, technology, and peclagogy. Media literacy is defin어 as “the ability to acæss, analyze, evaluate, and communicate messages in a variety of fonns." A media literate person should be able to use the media as a tool as well as a rep­resentational vehicle. our “communication" society, characterized as networked, knowledge-based, committed to life-Iong learning, is a good pedagogical environment for media educatlon.Some basic characteristics of media education include inquiry based educatlon, student centered learning, problem solving in cooperative terms, altematives to standardized testing, and the development of interrelating curriculum. It should also take interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches interrelating the areas of culture, sociology, education, psychology, philosophy, and technology.Media education is not simply on how to use the media or the computer but is expanded into the areas of analysis, interpretation, adaptation, and application. Media ooucation is es­sential in developing a democratic society that en∞urages diversified ideas and approaches for improvement.
