Fifty years ago, women and men had each of their separate positions. Women stayed at home doing all the housework and raising all the children. Men worked outside on the farms or at companies to earn the money to support their families. But today, we can see that a lot of things have changed for women. They don't have to be doomed to do housework for the rest of their lives. They can be a successful business person. They aren't obliged to have 100% responsibility for doing housework or raising children. There are also more laws specific to women being enacted. Most women, nowadays, are as well educated as men. They have more opportunities to apply for jobs, too. Their abilities at work have enhanced due to
Burdensome Education in KoreaHave you seen the faces of the children on the streets lately? Do they look like children? Do they act like children? If you look at school playgrounds, you'd see that there are fewer students everyday. There are fewer students in middle school playgrounds and fewer in high school playgrounds. They don't have time to play anymore. They don't have time to enjoy their childhood or teen-hood. They're under so much stress. Their parents ask so much of them and the students are so exhausted trying to satisfy them. What happened to the times when children were actually children? And why can't the teenagers spend time on their real ambitions and goals?Look at the elementary school students these days. They have to be good in everything. Not just good, they have to be the best in everything. They have to master music, art, and physical Eds before they go up to middle school since they won't have time to study these subjects when they're in middle school. Because in middle school they'll be too busy mastering in mathematics, English and Korean. They have to master everything as early as possible. Earlier then their fellow students. They have to compete with their closest friends and they feel bad if their friends do better than them. And because of this most elementary school students go to at least two or three private institutes and take private lessons everyday after school. I asked 50 elementary school students in Chung joo a few questions.아래질문들에 대한 설문지를 그 지역에서 만드세요.How many hours do you spend a day on studying? How many hours do you spend with your friends or family members? What many hours do you sleep on the weekdays? As you can see from this chart, they don't have much time to have good long conversations with their friends or family. And they spend an abnormous amount of time on studying.According to a statistics in 1996, 23.4 among 100,000 students aged from 5 to 24 committed suicide. Almost 30% more than in 1995 and rate is said to be increasing. It was the second highest death rate and the first was in traffic accidents. According to Professor Choi, more and more students are committing suicide because of two main reasons. Stress from examinations and mental depression which is hard to overcome since they don't have much time to have conversationsAnd all for what? Our education is still centered on college entrance examinations. In order to gain admission to better high schools and Universities, everybody has to be better than everybody. It doesn't matter what your interests are. If you enter a famous university, you're a superior human being. It doesn't matter what your major is. And a majority of the students want to enter Seoul University or KAIST University?Let's see here.Who wanted to enter this University at first? Did you want to enter this university when you were in the first grade of middle school? Then where did you want to go to? Who wanted to enter Seoul university or KAIST university? Who thought about it at least once. See? Almost 100%.We were all under the pressure of studying. And unfortunately the education pressure is increasing day by day.Test scores shouldn't judge people. But there are more and more people judging people with it. We all know that knowledge is important. But we've emphasized it so much that we've forgotten all the other important factors of life. If you get bad grades at school, everybody looks down on you, even your school teachers. You get punished if you don't get good grades. Our education system has to be criticized and reformed and so do we. We should encourage our students by showing them that there are more things to learn and experience besides knowledge.Grades don't show everything. There are better values in life than just knowledge. Students aren't computers. They're human beings. And Human beings can't live on knowledge alone. There are a lot of things we can't learn from books. And there are a lot of things we can learn outside of school.
Hello everyone. I'm sorry but I'm going to start my speech by showing you some horrifying pictures. I know it's morning and everything but let's just take a look at it for a moment.(Explain Pictures 열화우라늄에 감염된 아이들의 사진을 보여준다. 정말 끔찍해요.)These pictures are the side effects of Depleted Uranium. And what is Depleted Uranium(DU)? It is what is left over after natural uranium has been used. When a weapon made with a DU tip strikes a solid object, like a tank, it goes straight through it. When DU hits a solid object it burns up to about 5000 degrees and makes a black cloud. The cloud is made of very fine poisonous dust. Each one of those will start cancer and some of it will go into our blood and bones leading to leukemia(백혈병). It can also alters our genetic cells causing us to have disabled babies. There was a research showing that there were four times more babies with the down syndrome than before the war. And 300 tons of it was used in the Gulf war. After the gulf war Coallation Groups thought they've won. About 148 Americans died and nearly 200,000 Iraqi people died from the war. But the war wasn't over. 40% of these veterans are disabled and about 10,000 had already died. 49 British soldiers died in the war but 600 of the soldiers who participated in the war died of cancer or commited suicide. Most of them were in their twenties and thirties. There was a training video tape for soldiers before the war. Unrolling their sleeves and covering all parts of their body including their faces. But for some reason, it wasn't shown to the soldiers. They didn't want anybody to know that the new weapon they were going to use was dangerous. The soldiers didn't even know what the Depleted Uranium could do to them. One UK Gulf veteran is Ray Bristow, a former marathon runner. In 1999 he told the BBC that he gradually noticed that everytime he went out for a run his distance got shorter and shorter. Now, on his good days, he can get around quite adequately with a walking stick, as long as it's a short distance. After veterans experienced strange symptoms after the war they contacted the Military Defense for help, or information on what they've been disposed to, but the military defense refused to give any kind of information. They don't want to accept it. If they accept what Depleted Uranium did to the British troop soldiers. Then they have to accept the exposure was also to the Iraqi people. They would have to clean up the desert. And that would cost billions of dollars.Right now it's almost impossible to clean up the mess or treat the side effects. And what has war given us? More peace? More freedom? More safety? War is never merciful on people or nature. War is destruction. The country with the more destructive weapon wins. The American government said that they want to bring peace to the world and make the world a safer place. Did I hear them right? Or are they just making things worse. They're using the most powerful and worst weapons in the world and they won't allow any other country to have a more powerful weapon. Iraq tried to have one. It was also a country with a lot of oil. Guess what happened... It was about time to use their weapons. All I see is a greedy country. Trying to save money and make money with it's nuclear weapon trash. Making it into Depleted Uranium which they knew from the start that it was harmful to nature and human being.Depleted Uranium weapons should be banned from earth. And people shouldn't die for the reason of greed. And above all, war shouldn't be the solution to any kind of problem.
