Charles Kang My essay on socialization Soc Sci 1I’m Charles, 24 years old, and my Korean name is Hyun-cheol which means to be a wise person. Now I’m studying in UPV as an exchange student. I came here in the Philippines last October to study and experience something special that I’m always eager to do.I would like to introduce myself by 4 agents of socialization from now on.1. My familyMy families are 3, mother, younger brother, and I. My father died when I was 3 years old. He was a minor. While working at the coal mine, he passed away because of an accident. And then, my mother had gone away from us to make money. That made me feel alone and unhappy. I always envied my friends who lived with their parents. I had grown up under grandmother and grandfather during childhood. Our family has finally been able to live together when I was 14.I don’t blame my mother though she was apart from me for a long time because she has a reason why we were separate. That is because she had to make big money to raise my brother and I without her husband.“Mother is mighty.” That indicates my mother. She has always devoted herself to me. I know her sacrifice, and I will not forget her efforts to take care of me.2. My teacherI met the best teacher who always helped me when I was in middle school. He is very short, but he has a big mind. He knew my situation that I lived without parents so he gave me a scholarship and courage. He encouraged me to be confident. He made me more strong and vigorous. He is the one who I had never met before. Sometimes he was my mother and father for me.3. My friendsHuman being cannot live alone, and I have very often realized it. I have a lot of friends who are in good terms. I met some in the high school and others in the university. And I also have some Filipino friends. When I am in trouble, they help and encourage me, and I give them my hand when they have some problems.4. Mass mediaI like reading a book and I’ve read many books. The book that I was deeply impressed at was “Good thoughts.” There are a lot of lovely stories in the book and I found the one that changed my mind. It made me think that when you want to change something or somebody, how will you do that? For example, I draw a line. How can you make this line shorter without erasing? The answer is to draw a longer one. It means you have to change yourself first before changing other things or other people. After realizing this, I’ve been trying to put this in practice.5. My special experience( Military Service)All of the Korean men must have military service for more than 2 years except the disabled. When I was 20, I applied for a navy and passed several physical tests and an interview. After hard training I was deployed at a battleship, a 1900-ton naval escort-ship. My roll in the ship was cooking for 300 soldiers, that is, I was a cook during military service. As a result, I can cook well for 300 people, but I have a difficulty in cooking for only 3 persons.Protecting my country from enemies gave me a big burden and responsibility. And it gave me a physical and mental pain. But these pains made me more mature and I had a chance to think twice about importance of my family and country. What I learned from military service is that “Just enjoy if you can’t avoid it.” Most Korean who had a military service knows this sentence because they are taught this by military trainers. Being positive helps people who have difficulty get away from it all so I often try to remind myself of this sentence when I get upset, annoyed, and frustrated.
Dokdo is a part of Korean territory.Charles Kang2007-90025ContentsPurposeDefinition of DokdoThe main points of controversyEvidences that prove Dokdo is a part of Korean territoryConclusion1. Purpose of the reporting about DokdoHave you heard of Dokdo? This small island is a big and heavy issue between Korea and Japan, but most people in the world don’t know what happens in the Dokdo.Japan has continuously insisted Dokdo is Japanese territory, but it’s not a true. Furthermore, Japan wants to take this issue to the International Court of Justice. I would like to inform you of Dokdo and prove that Japan is telling a lie.2. Definition of DokdoThe beautiful islands of Dokdo are located in the East Sea. The islands’ addresses cover street number 1 through 96, Dokdo-ri, Ulleung-eup, Ulleung-gun in the province of Gyeongsangbuk-do. Dokdo comprises two main islands: Dongdo (East Island), and Seodo (West Island). Dongdo is located at 37º 14′ 26.8″ north latitude and 131º 52′ 10.4″ east longitudef the cone-shaped island of Seodo is 168.5 meters above sea level, and the highest point on Dongdo is 98.6 meters above sea level.4) Coast lineDokdo has a total coastline of 5.4 kilometers (Dongdo 2.8㎞, Seodo 2.6㎞), and there is a port on Dongdo.5) GeographySeodo (West Island) and Dongdo (East Island) are 110-160m (360-554 ft) apart, while the narrow inlet between the two is only 330m (0.2 miles) long. Dongdo has a crater and consists of andesite. Its highest point rises 98m (321 ft) above sea level. Seodo is largely ignimbrite and its highest point is 169 m (554 ft) above sea level. Dongdo has also been called ‘Female Island,’ while Seodo has been called ‘Male Island.’3. The main points of controversyThere are 2 main points that make Japan confident of Dokdo.1) Effective ManagementThe Japan has made claims that Japan’s “effective management” of Dokdo had been in place as early as the 17th century, when the shogunate allegedly granted the merchant family Otani from Yonago the territorymen can’t serve as grounds for sovereignty claims over the island.2) Prior Occupation over ownerless islandJapan claims that Dokdo became Japanese territory when it was incorporated into Shimane Prefecture in 1905 and that since the past Dokdo was ownerless island so Japan acquired it by prior occupation. However, Korea abolished the Empty Island Policy toward Ulleungdo at the end of the 19th century and started to actively develop Ulleungdo and Dokdo. In 1900 the Korean government strengthened its control of Ulleungdo and Dokdo. The Korean Empire issued Korean Government Imperial Ordinance No. 41, defined the jurisdiction of Ulleungdo and Seokdo(Dokdo). The website of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims that it is unclear wheather Seokdo refers to Dokdo in the Imperial Ordinance to make sense of Japan’s insistence, Prior Occupation over ownerless island. The answer to this question can be easily found in the Korean practice of using both the Korean pronounciation of a Chines chs annexed to Korea’s Silla Dynasty in 512. The eastern island Ulleungdi and Dokdo that composed Usanguk have been a part of the Korean history ever since.2) Japanese ancient maps marked Dokdo as a Korean territory. published by Japanese government in 1667, which they claimed as the first document that recorded Dokdo. It also wrote Dokdo in next to Joseon, clearly marking it as Joseon’s territory by painting same color yellow.3) A famous geologist D’Anville’s recorded Dokdo as a Korean territory. In 1737, a famous French geologist D’Anville’s , known as Royaume de Coree, marked Dokdo as a territory of Joseon which is a part of Korean history.4) The highest state organ of Japan (Prime Minister) concluded Dokdo and Uleungdo as Korean territories. In 1877, Prime Minister of Japan concluded Ulleungdo and Dokdo were Korean territories and sent an official document to the Department of the Interior, stating Ulleungdo and Dokdo were irrelevant places to Japan and ordered not to include Dokdo inanuary 28, 1905, and then Japan named Dokdo as Takesima and decided to place it under the rule of Shimane Prefecture.8) In 1946 Dokdo were to be excluded from Japan’s administrative authority by the supreme command No.677 of SCAPIN.After World War Ⅱ, the Supreme Command released its military command No. 677 SCAPIN (Supreme Command of the Allies Power’s Instruction) and returned Jejudo, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo to Korea.9) The Allies ruleed Dokdo as a Korean territory. This is invaluable data clearly proving the Allies ruled Dokdo as a Korean territory.10) The U.N. Forces included Dokdo as a Korean territory. When the Korea War broke out in 1950, the UN Force designed Korean Air Defense Identification Zone in order to defend the Korean territory from sky and continue to use it to the present day.5. ConclusionJapan has wanted to bring this issue to the International Court of Justice. The reason why Japan wants to do so is simple. Japan would gain an enormous political advantage by standing aton.
GETTING THE INTERVIEW•Be courteous, confident and complete: When dealing with reluctant people, don`t threaten. Instead, tell them about the story you`re doing and why you need to interview them. •Fairness and accuracy: Reluctant interviewees often think you`re just out to get them. Be firm - I`m going to be doing a story regardless of whether you talk to me.But then quickly add this: I want to be as fair and accurate as I possibly can. That`s why I want to talk with you - to ensure my story is fair . . . balanced . . . has your point of view in it. And I want it to be accurate, and you can help me ensure the accuracy.•Never take no for an answer: On the phone or in person, let THEM be the ones to end the conversation, not you. Look for common ground - a mutual friend, a shared interest - anything to make them more comfortable. PREPARING FOR THE INTERVIEW•Be prepared: Not knowing your subject matter can have dire consequences. The person being interviewed can buffalo you. Or they can shade the truth. Or they can be nonresponsive. •Step back: Sometimes, thorough research can leave you feeling like there`s nothing new to ask this person (often the case in celebrity/feature interviews). Take a step back; momentarily erase what you`ve learned if needed in order to prepare your questions. Think of ways to go deeper on a particular topic the subject may have talked about time and time again.
