EssayWhen I entered a middle school in 1990s, English as a second language was being boomed at the first time. Many schools adopted the traditional methods teaching a reading and writing than speaking English. Teachers used to give the students the aural-oral training to memorize the dialogues. Therefore, the only thing I should do is to read the text and translate it, or teachers read a book and then we repeated it. It was very boring and not effective for me. I don’t think the method was successful. However, in these days, many teaching methods are being changed. While I was doing the student teaching, I could see the improvements. A lot of teachers (even in my school days) also were using the PPT and OHP as well as planning the group works. During watching the class they planed, I thought it’s more helpful for students. In following paragraphs, I will think about the reasons.First of all, one of the traditional methods’ weaknesses is there aren’t the activities. During my school ages, I used to be taught by reading, writing and memorizing the dialogues. It was very boring and tired. There were not a group work and activities to motivate to learn. I had to study alone with text books, and I felt not as important. Tests were only my purpose. However, the schools nowadays are innovated in various ways. When I did my student teaching, there was a Korean teacher who taught English in English. Her class was full of the activities and materials such as arranging word order game and making English newspaper. Students eagerly wanted to participate in group work and to express their own opinion. Therefore, I can sure this method is much more helpful.Next, teachers’ roles in traditional classrooms are limited. Teachers always explained and lectured a text, and their roles were only to give an instruction. Learners are bored and tired to take a lesson. Since I had no choice but to be passive, my study didn’t improve more than before. However, I had experiences to visit a successful class. The teacher in the middle school used the PPT and various activities such as a story-telling and game. Learners were interested in speaking English as well as even difficult grammar. The teachers helped to involve the students in class and assist them. If teachers give more activities to learners as involvers and enablers, learners can be centered in the class. Accordingly, they will participate in the class more active, speak English more and more, and be able to improve their study.Lastly, a passive learning is not for adults. Unlike children, adults are independent and active. They have a goal to study language, and they want to use it more practical way. If adults who have the particular purpose such as a job and promotions are taught by only reading and writing, they will give up learning. I have an experience to teach two adult learners. Even though they were lack of grammar and vocabulary, they wanted to speak and interact with each other more. Only reading, writing, and memorizing can’t be applied to satisfy all of the learners. For successful teaching, I think teachers should consider the various learners. In conclusion, the effective teaching I think is that teachers should do a need analysis for various learner’s types and purposes. It makes students have important role in the class so that student’s participation and interest will be increased. A lot of activities and group works can also help students to be an active learner. I don’t want to tell that it is necessary for teachers to use those activities and techniques all the class time. Teachers should develop teaching plan using the appropriate training methods and teaching aids for the specific contents.
