  • [생물] Human cloning
JeongYong OhResearch ProjectCompJanuary 30, 2003SUMMARYIn “Baby, It’s You! And You, and You…” by Nancy Gibbs, she does not directly approve the view of those who think that no possible benefit can justify when scientists clone somebody. However, she opposes human cloning as she emphasis on the ethical aspects. She points out that cloning is closer to you than you think, and no researchers think the mechanics of cloning are very hard because researchers have learned them since Dolly. Moreover, Raelians, a religious group, intend to clone the cells of a dead 10-month-old boy.First of all, she states that the technology of cloning is helpful to those who have a child who needs a transplant, those whose daughter died in a car crash, and gay men, who have been frustrated because they couldn’t readily have their own child. Variations on the cloning technology have been already used in biotechnology labs all across the country. These techniques will allow the creation of cloned herds of sheep a TIME/CNN poll that 90% of respondents thought that it was a bad idea to clone a human being. Finally, she rebuts that even people who think that they know about cloning don’t fully understand its implications. They think that cloning makes them immortal, but cloning cannot make them immortal because cloning is obviously making a different person.ReactionI thought that cloning does not only throw serious problems to people, but also gives affirmative aspects and that the technology of cloning has to develop for medical aspects. However, after I read this article, my thought has been changed by the fact that cloning can cause problems such as potential babies born deformed and killing fetuses and embryos for no purpose, except for curiosity.Though my father passed away because of heart disease, I agree with Ethicist Caplan who says, “If you can’t agree that cloning is wrong to do, and if the media can’t agree to condemn rather than gawk, that’s a condemnation of us all.”. If cloning isnd interests so competing. She presents that both bills before the House promised to outlaw reproductive cloning. First of all, the hard-line choice was that the bill that would bar the creation of cloned human embryos for any purpose. She presents the arguments that an embryo at any stage of development is a human life, worthy of protection. In addition, “[ . . . ] turns human life into a commodity and fosters a culture of dehumanization” (20).Then the alternative amendment would also bar reproductive cloning but would allow therapeutic cloning. Scientists argue that if we shut that research down, the most promising frontier in medicine is suddenly off limits. Also, many lawmakers argue that every year tens of thousands of frozen embryos left over from fertility treatments are in clinics around the country, and they can be used to do research on cells from such embryos most of which would be destroyed anyway. However, she rebuts this argument in the article by stating that “[ . . . ] wcause many people need medical cure. It takes hopes away from patients, and lets loved families suffer without a cure. However, after reading this article, I think that the technique of human cloning is hard to control how it is used because some governments that make mistakes always exist around the country. I assure that a partial ban is not good on cloning, but a whole ban is good to control usage of human cloning.JeongYong OhResearch ProjectCompJanuary 30, 2003SUMMARYIn “Abducting the Cloning Debate” by Nancy Gibbs, the author worries about science being mixed with a circus full of clowns, tricks, and gaudy lights, where everything is for sale and nothing is for real. She isn’t surprised at the news that Raelians claims to be cloning children because she has believed that human cloning was only a matter of time before one of the teams racing to produce the first human clone either succeeded or just decided to claim it had.She presents the insistence of Rael who is a prophet of the ng a primate despite thousands of tries when she states that “[ . . . ] will charge $200,000 for its reproductive service [ . . . ]” (2) and people. Also, she states that the Raelians can be assured that all the free advertising has worked, and inquiries from prospective parents will rise with each new headline regardless of the damage: whether Clonaid’s claims are a hoax or not.She assures the reader that the promise of a new technology doesn’t outweigh the risks that it could be misused.ReactionI didn’t know that a cloned child was born and has lived in the past 4 years, and a second cloned birth was realized. I think that Raelians are quasi-fanatics because they believe that they will reach eternal life and will be willing to reborn through this technique. Also, I think that the challenges are too important to be distorted by the greed renegade scientists with an alien agenda. I hope that their argument can’t be true.Works CitedGibbs, Nancy. “Abducting the Cloning Debate.” Time on t

  • We Live and We Learn 평가B괜찮아요
    W. Blake ReinholdEssay 1English Composition 1Jan. 16, 2003We Live and We LearnLife has a way of throwing curves at everyone. How one dreads on unfortunate circumstances is not important, but how we take comfort in our own good fortune. At the age of fifteen, I embarked on what was to be, the most eye opening experience of my life. The lead up to this experience although eye opening, was not joyful. The answer to all of our problems, in my father’s eyes, seemed to be nothing but problems for myself. The year I received my driver’s license, entered high school, grew eight inches, and got a girl to look my way, was to be over when my father let me in on a secret he had been holding from me for almost a full year. What I thought to be the greatest year of my life was about to be over. A great change of lifestyle for my family was to take place in July. We were moving to Kuwait. A land I believed to be full of “chaotic camel riders” and “blistering sand storms.”When it was time to get on the airplane for Kuwait City I took one last look at what I had known to be home. The warm summer air was blowing strong, as it always does in west Texas. The ground crew was rushing last minute luggage to the airplane. I watched a short stout man fall to his back when trying to pack one of mother’s suitcases. Next to me was a gorgeous girl wearing scuffed Doc Marten sandals, short cutoff jeans, a bright pink halter-top, and the shinny white gold necklace I had given her for her birthday only two days before. I looked back and forth between the airplane and the girl of my dreams. I could not tell exactly how she felt, but I knew that the relationship could never work out as soon as the doors slam shut on the ugly airplane. All I could tell her was that I would miss her. Upon taking my seat in the airplane, I realized there was no turning back.Traveling to Kuwait seemed to be a never-ending battle. After two painstaking layovers, I found myself stuck between two unfamiliar people. On my left, next to the window, sat an armrest hog of a man. The man had short, receding, black hair. The woman on the isle was near drunk, surely after four glasses of wine. A bitter look presided on her face. I later found out, she and her husband, the man on my left, had undergone an argument. I tried to trade seats with each passenger. Both the man and the women declined my offer. After seven of the eight hours of flight, I thought my head would explode. The immaturity of these people was unreal. We began our descent, apparently, ahead of schedule at around eleven o’clock at night. The man next to me had gone to the restroom. Finally, I had opportunity to look out the window. My eyes started to hurt from the world I saw below. The ground was lit up by all of the oil field flares. The bright flares brought to mind images of hell. Off in the distance I could see pitch black on the surface. The black must have been water of the Persian Gulf. When the airplane reached the terminal, I started to get incredibly nervous. We entered a marble walled airport. Arabic people were everywhere. Kuwaiti soldiers, holding large rifles, were spaced about a hundred feet apart. A whole new world surrounded my family. What had we gotten into?Bright pink signs scattered throughout the airport. The pink was almost an identical match to the shirt that the girl I left behind was wearing. Taking comfort in this match, I realized something. Although I would miss her terribly, it was ok to take comfort in her memory. She would hold a near perfect image in my head as the girl that unfortunate circumstance had taken away from me.Two years later I moved back to west Texas. I recall an incident encountered with a former schoolteacher. The teacher asked me if the Kuwaiti natives begged me for money. I thought he was kidding at first, so I laughed. He did not laugh. Anyone that watches television should know that Kuwait is a world leader in oil production. On average, Kuwait is the richest nationality to belong to in the world!I no longer regretted living in “chaotic camel riding” country. I felt unlike the scared stubborn boy on that dreadful July day. Educated in world travel and people skills, I seemed to have an edge on the peers I had left behind. I had been to a world most Americans have a hard time comprehending. Included in those of my peers who seemed to be, “lacking people skills,” was that once so perfect girl. Unfortunately, her ignorance, massive weight gain, and overall lack of drive, all contributed to me losing virtually all attraction for her. I like to look back on how I dreaded the move to Kuwait and laugh. I take comfort in the good that transpired from my once in a lifetime experience.PAGE PAGE 4Reinhold

  • What a Wasteful People Americans Are
JeongYong OhIllustrationComp1February 12, 03What a Wasteful People Americans ArePeople demand convenience, comfort, and luxury. Such factors have made a wasteful life. America is usually thought to be a wasteful country. Their wasteful lifestyles have contributed to their being called the most wasteful culture on the earth. Every year, the United States uses over 60 percent of the natural resources throughout the whole world. They are only 270 Million out of over 6 Billon people in the world; however, they are spending more than half of the natural resources. In addition, every year, they produce enough garbage to fill a line of dump trucks all the way to the moon, and nobody knows that how much of that was just wasted. Since I came to the United States, I have noticed that American people waste water, food, and the electricity in their lives. One of the things that Americans are wasteful in is their use of water. America is a big country, so they don’t need to build tall houses. Instead, they build very wide but low houses like 2 to 3 stories. The distance between two houses is pretty far, and there is grassplot between houses and streets. Almost all over the year, especially during summer, tons of water is used to take care of the grass. It was a big surprise for me since I knew that there are many countries that they need water. It made me wonder how much water is wasted in the United States, and I have found that the average American uses 243 gallons of water every day. And 236 of gallons go straight down the drain, down the toilet, or for outdoor use.We occasionally see people making a to-go order line in a restaurant. They buy sandwiches or burgers and throw them away after two to three bites. They would do that if they were already full after two or three bites, if they were busy, or if the food really tasted bad. I wonder, wouldn’t it be possible to keep the food for the next few hours? Something that makes me think here is the fact that not all people in America can do that. It is not hard for us to see people begging for food or money on the street.Electricity must be the one that should be emphasized when we talk about wasting thing. Electricity is used for our convenience and comfortable life, and it is often wasted by ignorance or carelessness. Have you lived in a dorm? If you have lived in a dorm, you must have felt that how much electricity Americans waste. I had a friend who lived in a dorm and had to block the half of the hole where the cold air comes in. Maybe, you don’t have to go to a dorm. If you stay inside any building in the United States, you will feel cold. I have seen many people who were wearing thick clothes inside buildings because of the air conditioner. If they adjusted the temperature a little bit higher, I bet lots of electricity and resources would be saved. In conclusion, American people waste water, food, and the electricity in their lives. The effective ways to stop them from wasting are to give them education so that they will learn how much they could save, have them conscious about why they should do so, and have them look around the world so that they can see how luxuriously they have lived compared to other poor countries. Furthermore, they should realize that the natural resources aren’t the permanent gift of God.Oh PAGE 2
