DefinitionTPMS(Tire Pressure Monitoring System) is an electronic system to monitor the air pressure inside the tires on various types of vehicles. TPMS report real time the tire pressure information to the driver of the vehicle. TPMS are divided into two different types such as direct (dTPMS) and indirect (iTPMS).Ⅱ. Part OneHow TPMS WorkIf the tire air pressure is too high or too low, the tire can be blown up or the vehicle is able to lead to a major accident and slips easily. And fuel consumption is increased; therefore, fuel economy is getting worse, tire life quality is shorten, as much as less ride and ressure is below the minimum acceptable level by illuminating a warning lamp; therefore, the driver can check the tire pressure status in real time.Spare TireSome vehicle’s spare tires are monitored and included in the system message.Description on Direct and Indirect SystemsDirect TPMS (dTPMS): The dTPMS physically measure the tire pressure and temperature in each tire and report it. For dTPMS to work properly, they need to recognize the sensor positions and have to ignore the signals from other vehicles' sensors.Indirect TPMS (iTPMS): The iTPMS do not physically measure the tire pressure but utilize a vehicle's ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) or ESC (Electronic Stability Control) to measure rotational speeds of wheels and tires.Reason for TPMS LegislationThe TPMS system has begun to make a mark over 10 years ago because of one incident. In July 2000, Japanese tire company, which name is Firestone Inc, was 2nd in U.S market share. The Firestones tires were punctured and killed more thacars, passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses. In the European Union, starting in November 2012, all new models of passenger cars must be equipped with a TPMS.Ⅱ. If necessary, grip valve insert ① at cylindrical section of ball head.Remove valve insert from rim.ⅲ) Remove washer ①.Installing wheel electronics※ NoteDo not tighten screw; wheel electronics and valve insert must be loosely joined together.ⅰ) Insert new Torx socket screw ① in wheel electronics ② and secure firmly.Twist new valve insert ③ by hand approx. 3 turns onto screw ①.ⅱ) Insert valve insert with wheel electronics into cleaned valve bore.Here the radial bore ① for gripping on the circumference of the valve insert ball head must point outwards.ⅲ) Insert the brace ① supplied with the valve into the valve insert bore.Fit new washer and screw on new union nut ② by hen years is the recommended change interval (BMW Online)7 years is recommended (Alldata Online). It is not exchangeable, so we need to replace the batteries after 7 years.Set & ResetResetting the System※ NoteEach time a tire inflation pressure has been corrected or a wheel or tire has been changed, reset the system.ⅰ) "Vehicle Info"ⅱ) "Vehicle Status"ⅲ) "Reset TPM"ⅳ) Start the engine - do not drive awayⅴ) Start the initialization using "Reset TPM"ⅵ) Start to drive. The tires are shown in gray and "Resetting TPM..." is displayed.ⅶ) After driving a few minutes, the set inflation pressures in the tires are accepted as the target values to be monitored. The system reset is completed during your drive, and can be interrupted at any time. When driving resumes, the reset is continued automatically.
