I think that methodology in EFL is a study about how to teach contents selected for language teaching in an effective way. In fact, methodology includes both theories of language and learning (approach) and knowledge of various methods. Based on them, when instructors plan foreign language classes, they research which techniques and procedures are appropriate in teaching target language, select proper ones according to the objectives of the lesson, and organize them into three different stages: pre-activity, while-activity, and post-activity.

What is a stereotype? It is a fixed, commonly shared idea or image of a person or group. It seems that a stereotype is based on an oversimplification of some observed or imagined trait of behavior or appearance, not a genuine reflection of ideas that reveal characteristics one group actually has. Stereotypes can be either positive (black men are good at basketball) or negative (women are bad drivers.) Nevertheless, most stereotypes can bring the situation that people ignore the uniqueness of individuals by painting all members of a group with the same brush. And they are occasionally linked to some kinds of prejudice.For example, in the United States, most people think that Asian students are hardworking, diligent, and good at mathematics so that most of Asian-American teenagers feel pressure in doing well in math or science more than in sports, music, or literature. The stereotype, “You’re Asian, you’re supposed to be adroit in math,” looks very approving but it might bring the result that Asian students are excluded from other academic fields.In the American society, there is one more fixed idea that black men are good at basketball. Thus, people hardly think Spanish, Asian, or White players are more distinguished in basketball than African-American players do. From time to time, stereotyped groups like doing-well-in-math Asian students think that they are superior to other ethnic groups and then become condescending toward others. Recently, an Asian student who socialize only with whites is called a ‘twinkie,’ one who is yellow on the outside but white on the inside. And a white teenager who socialize with Asians is considered an ‘egg,’ whites on the outside and yellow on the inside.Even positive stereotypes can become harmful because when one stereotyped group is labeled as ‘intelligent’ or ‘athletic,’ there is an ample chance that they have a sense of their own superiority to other groups. And this feeling can be enlarged to racial prejudice.To avoid harmful stereotypes and prejudice, Individuals should raise the ability to identify destructive clichés by understanding everyone is different, by broadening their friends’ base, and by being critical of existed ideas. If people try to take a look at not only themselves but also other people, and listen to their surroundings of all different types, and step outside of the situation and look at the big picture, prejudice can not work and people will be able to come to their own opinion without blindly following one side or another. 루소는 18세기 가장 위대한 사상가들 중의 한 사람이다. 그는 계몽시대 인물이지만 계몽사상의 주도적 인물이었던 사람들과 사상적으로 일정한 거리를 두고 있었다. 이 시기에는 사회계약설이라는 혁명적 성격의 이론이 등장한다. 하지만 대표적인 사상가인 T.홉스, J.로크, J.J.루소는 각각 다른 방식으로 접근했다. 그 중에서 루소는 인간의 불평등의 원인을 사유재산에 의하는 것이라 생각하여, 사회계약에 입각하여 인민이 자유, 평등을 누릴 있는 자연 상태를 구상하였다. 인민의 일반의지로서의 국가가 자유, 평등으로 보장해 줄 수 있는 정치체제가 되어야 한다는 주장으로, 인간 스스로의 올바른 본성과 의지를 존중한 것이다. 그는 자신의 사상을 옹호하기위하여 저술활동에 전념하였다. 그는 정치사상, 교육사상, 문학과 음악에 이르기까지 광범위한 영역에 걸쳐 지적 활동을 전개하였다. 그가 저술하는 분야는 지적 논쟁을 불러 일으켰으며 그의 정치학적 저서는 정치 이론뿐만 아니라 정치실제에도 큰 영향을 미쳤고, 프랑스 혁명은 그에게 힘입은 바가 크다고 할 수 있다. 그가 쓴 은 당대는 물론 후세에 지대한 영향을 미쳤으며 자연주의, 아동중심교육사상, 진보주의 등은 모두 그의 교육사상에서 연원 된 것이다.제 1부은 교육의 총론과 1세부터 5세까지의 유아의 교육인 체육을 논의 하고 있다. 모든 유아의 교육은 아동의 자유에 맡기어서 그들의 자연적인 활동 발육을 방해해서는 안 된다고 그는 말하고 있다. “창조자의 손에서 나올 때는 모든 것이 선하나 사람의 손에서 모든 것이 타락한다.” 이 말은 루소가 인간의 본성에 대해 근본적으로 긍정적인 입장을 가지고 있음을 보여준다. 또한 처음으로 아이를 다루는 사람은 여성이며, 이는 창조주의 뜻이라 하였다. 아버지의 야심이나 탐욕, 편견, 무관심은 어머니의 맹목적인 애정에 비해 몇 백 배나 유해한 것이라 하며 부드럽고 똑똑한 어머니를 요구 하고 있다. 특히 아동을 친모가 아닌 다른 아이의 어머니인 유모에게 맡기는 것은 자연을 배반하는 것이라고 하여 아동의 양육은 반드시 친모의 손으로써 직접 기르지 아니하면 안 된다는 것이다. 이것은 그 당시 귀족 사회에서는 일반적으로 유모를 썼기 때문이다.제 2부는 아동기의 교육에 관한 내용이다. 이 시기에는 교육은 소극적 교육이란 말로 대표된다. 여기서 소극적 교육이란, 덕이나 진리를 가르치는 것이 아니라 마음을 악덕으로부터 보호되어야 한다. 즉, 학습자에게 외적인 것을 적극적으로 집어넣는 것이 아니라 사회 안에 있는 반 교육적인 것인 것들이 영향을 미치지 못하도록 막는 것을 의미한다. 또한 루소는 아동에게 너무 많은 것을 가르쳐서는 안 된다고 주장하였다. 12세까지는 육체적 성장과 감각 훈련에 힘쓰며 아무것도 배우지 않고 건강하게 자라기만 한다면 그 후의 교육은 훨씬 수월하고 빠른 속도로 이루어진다고 주장하고 있다. 그는 ‘정확하고 명료한 관념만 전달 하고자한다. 이성이나 판단은 천천히 획득되기 때문이다. 중요한 것은 아동들이 학문을 사랑하는 취향을 갖는 것이다. 취미가 좀더 발달했을 때 학문을 배우기 위한 방법을 가르치는 것이 중요하다. 이것이야말로 확실히 모든 좋은 교육의 근본 원칙이다.’라고 말하면서, 어린 시절의 과도한 학습량을 경험한 아이는 지적호기심을 잃게 되고, 결국 올바른 공부습관을 갖지 못하게 된다고 하였다. 또한, 이 시기에 아이는 글을 배우게 되지만, 아직까지 판단력을 갖추지 못하였으므로 책을 읽게 해서는 안 된다.제 3부는 12세에서 15세까지의 교육을 설명하고 있다. 이 시기에는 물리, 지리, 천문 등의 자연과학과 모든 직업에 필요한 수공을 중시하였다. 과학은 교사가 가르치는 것이 아니고 아동 자신이 발견해야 하므로, 아동의 호기심을 북돋아 사실을 관찰하게 하고, 아동 스스로의 노력을 강조하도록 해야 한다. 여전히 책을 사용하지 않아야 한다는 원칙을 세우고 있지만, 유일하게 독서가 허용되는 책은 이다. 왜냐하면 이 책에서 배울 수 있는 지식이 모두 아이가 경험적으로 배운 것이기 때문이다. 또한 이 시기에 사회생활에 대한 준비교육을 시켜야한다. 산업사회에서는 더 이상 자급자족의 형태로는 살아남기 어려우므로, 상호 작용하는 법을 배워야한다. 에밀은 목공기술을 배우면서 그것이 함축하는 인간들의 상호의존성, 교류의 유용성, 평등성 등을 깨우친다.제 4부는 15세에서 20세까지의 교육을 말하고 있다. ‘첫 번째는 존재하기 위하여 두 번째는 살기 위하여. 처음에는 인간으로 태어나고 두 번째는 남성이나 여성으로 태어난다.’이는 이 시기가 제2의 탄생시기이자 교육의 정점을 이루는 단계라는 것을 보여준다. 아이들은 이제 자아를 발견하고 이성(異姓)에 대한 관심을 갖게 되는데 이것이 바로 정열(情熱)이다. 이러한 정열 중에서 가장 근본적이며 일생동안 지속되는 것은 자기애이며 그 다음은 이성을 찾는 정열이라고 하였다. 이때, 아이가 이성에 대한 정념에 일찍 사로잡히지 않도록 관심을 다른 데로 돌리거나 상상력을 진정시킨다. 그러나 아이가 마침내 이성에 대한 정념에 사로잡히는 때가 되면, 교육자는 그를 이젠 성인 남자로 대해야 한다. 그의 사랑의 욕구를 억누르게 하지 말고 친구 같은 안내자 역할을 하여 어떤 여인이 이상적인 반려자인지를 이야기 해 준다. 에밀은 25세에 이르러서 이상적인 아내인 소피와 결혼한다. 그리고 에밀은 사회에 나갈 준비로서 사회를 알 필요가 있으나, 현재의 사회는 부패했기 때문에 아무것도 배울 것이 없다고 하면서, 역사 연구를 통해서 인성의 자연을 알게 하고 사회의 부패를 가련히 생각하여 이를 동정의 마음으로 발전시켜야한다고 말했다. 왜냐하면, 루소는 동정을 모든 도덕의 근본이라고 생각하기 때문이다. 또한 종교교육은 15세 이후에 시작하며, 고어연구, 극의 관람에 의해서 취미를 길러야 한다고 하였다. 여기서, 루소의 종교관은 계시진리를 믿지 못하고 철학적인 사유를 통해 신의 존재를 인정하는 이신론(理神論)이다.제 5부는 에밀의 이상적인 아내로서 소피를 선택하여 소피의 교육을 말하고 있다. 루소는 철저하게 성 역할을 구분하였다. 루소는 ‘딸을 훌륭한 남성으로 만들려 하지 마라. 그것은 자연을 부인하는 행위이다.’ 라고 언급했다. 이를 다시 말하면, 여성은 여성으로서 갖추어야할 육체적, 정신적, 도덕적 특징 모두를 소유해야 한다는 것이다. 그는 모든 여자는 남자를 즐겁게 하는 것이 그의 천부(天賦)라고 주장하면서, 여성의 교육은 오로지 남성의 필요에 따라 행해져야 한다고 말했다. 그런 의미에서, 여성 교육은 단지 순종, 겸손의 미덕을 기르고, 수예에 능하게 하고, 남편을 위로하고, 아이를 기르고, 노인을 간호하고, 집안을 정리하는 일 등에 국한될 수밖에 없었다.
