(혼란스러웠습니다)It was about a year ago that a Korean-Japanese writer who came to seoul to study Korean literature wrote a very searching arti-cle about this avalanche of little-heeded pieces of publicity- 대략 1년 전 한국문화를 공부하기 위해 한국에 왔던 제일교포 작가가 이와 같이 상대에 대한 배려심이 결여되어있는 범람하는 광고에 대한 날카로운 기사를 쓴 적이 있다.People have seen so many of them, with so many different messages that they have become totally insensitive to their contents.- 사람들은 많은 광고들이 각기 다른 많은 메시지를 담고 있기 때문에 사람들이 광고 내용에 대해서 무감각해졌다.There are of course, useful public service notices requesting citizens' cooperation in census taking, filing tax reports on time, and preventing fires.- 물론 범람하는 그 광고 속에는 인구조사, 정해진 기간 내의 세금신고, 화제 예방과 같이 시민들의 협조를 당부하는 유용한 공공 통지서(공익 광고)도 있습니다.However, enormous posters with slogans urging people to be friendly to foreign visitors, and to be civic-minded and law-abiding seem rather out of place. These instructive messages are of an ethical nature and in the form of slogans they seem hardly effec-tive in instilling any real virtues.- 그러나 그런 광고 구호는 사람들이 외국인들에게 친절하고 시민의식이 있으며 법을 준수하는 것을 촉구하는 거대 포스터들은 오히려 겉도는 것처럼 보입니다. 이러한 교육적인 내용을 담고 있는 메시지들은 윤리적인 본성이지만 슬로건 형태에 있어서 그것들은 진정한 미덕을 심어주는데 있어 별로 효과가 없어 보입니다.The extent to which people have become indifferent was evidenc-ed on one street corner where there was a warning not to put any advertisements on the wall, and it was right there that I found several movie posters pasted on, deliberately flouting the warning.- 사람들이 관심 없던 정보는 벽에 어떠한 광고도 붙이지 말라는 경고가 있는 한 집과 모퉁이 그리고 의도적으로 경고를 공공연히 무시하며 영화 포스터들을 붙인 것을 발견한 바로 그곳에서 명백히 볼 수 있습니다.Another such example is the little poster on taxis that says "no hapsung(sharing a ride)," that seems to mean nothing to the driver or to the passenger. The taxi driver would undoubtedly stop his behicle for a man standing at a corner though he might already have a passenger in the back seat, warning poster or no warning poster.- 또 다른 예는 운전수 또는 승객에게 아무 상관없어 보이는 동승을 의미하는 합석 금지라고 써 있는 택시에 붙인 작은 포스터입니다. 택시기사는 의심 할 여지없이 경고표지판이 있던 없던 뒷 좌석에 이미 한명의 승객을 태웠을지라도 갓길에 서 있는 남자를 위해 그 택시를 세웠을 것입니다.It is usually of no use to argue with the driver. Well-managed bulletin boards placed at appropriate points throughout the city are urgently needed- 검고 촉촉하고 찢어진 포스터들과 플래카드들은 단지 이 걱정스러운 도시 공해에 한 몫을 하고 있습니다. 도시 전역에 적절한 위치에 부착된 잘 관리된 게시판들이 시급히 필요합니다.
Plastic dishes플라스틱 식기I do not know how other people feel about them, but I would like to express my aversion to the window displays of restaurant menu items made in plastic.
