NameClassDateEnglish education in KoreaHave you ever seen Korean people stutter when foreigners ask for directions in English on the street? Why do they have difficulties speaking English, even though they have learned it over 10 years? In my opinion, Korean English education system produces poor returns compared to the time and effort involved because it has focused on passive, traditional and inefficient ways. As Koreans have got more interested in English, the government has revised educational curriculum several times, but it still has many problems to be worked out. Here are some reasons that support my opinion on the basis of Korean traditional English education compare to what we have learned in class.First of all, we have studied English based on reading and listening which the reader or listener receives information perceptively of four basic skills. Students were forced to read and listen repeatedly and excel at memorization to get high scores on the tests. Such methods made our purposes not using English but only getting good grades. Consequently skills were used speaking and writing in isolation and couldn’t make the best use of language systems also. It is true that Korean teachers focus on grammar inattentive to other skills. There wasn’t any interaction of student-student and student-teacher because students couldn’t get feedback from teachers, and know exploring ways of interacting and working with other people in the class. To solve these matters, teachers should think use of four important language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and language systems (knowing, Phonology, Lexis, Grammar, Function, Discourse) and these skills have to be used interactively and in combination.Second of all, students have all different multiple intelligences to be used it differently. One person might be strong in visual intelligence, while one may be stronger in musical intelligence. Traditional education systems have tended to focus on linguistic and logical intelligences. Thus others couldn’t be used enough. When I was young, I would turn on the TV or music while I studying without distracting and sometimes remembered things by putting them in a rhyme. That meant I have more musical intelligence than the others. Unfortunately, I haven’t learned the way of studying using musical intelligence in school. If I have learned that way, I might have got higher scores in examinations. Due to students have multiple intelligences in different proportions, teaching in particular ways is not good for achieving their goals. The best way of teaching is using all of them properly then students can acquire things more effectively.Thirdly, most of my former English teachers were “The explainer”. They are literally inclined to explain subject matters without involving students. Since they just lecture or convey information, students had to listen and write it down by rote. Occasionally students asked questions during break time so our class was pretty quiet and boring. In addition to, Korean culture of respecting teachers contributed to make heavy atmosphere of the classroom. We obeyed their rules and sometimes scared of them. When I was in college in U.S, I got shocked because of their free atmosphere and sharing our thinking with professor freely. That makes lecture easier and more understandable. Thanks to my professor always opened his mind to our thoughts, we had no major difficulties even to foreign students. He was “The enabler” who has awareness how we are thinking and feeling in his class, and tried to build effective working relationships with students. Taken together, teachers should be the enabler to come up with an effective way of teaching rather than the explainer or involver. For all these reasons, it seems clear that the results of Korean English education was not as successful as had been expected. We rarely had chance to use the target language for communicative purpose in the circumstances as I mentioned earlier. Learners need to be learned diverse methods which can facilitate learners’ acquiring communicative skills. Teaching should be primarily oriented toward interacting and communicating with students. According to this approach, learning English could build communicative competence. Through this TESOL class I realized that there are various ways of teaching which stimulate brain with human senses. In my experience teaching I only used to input knowledge mostly grammar and vocabulary. This simple and one-way drill was not only tedious but also ineffective. In the future I will use various teaching methods that I learned from TESOL program and place major emphasis on student-centered activities using language skills, systems, multiple intelligences and so on. Furthermore, as an enabler I would help to create an effective learning environment and encourage students as much as I can. The more we learn, the more students will receive.
