Retrieved from EBSCOhost.Part 2: SummaryIn the article, “Fault or no fault?” from Christian Century (2002), Muller Davis states the current problematic environment of divorce in the United States and introduce some possible ways of improvement that might prevent couples from breaking up. He gives the concepts of how divorce laws should be approached to spouses and adapted to the family. In other words, he analyzed the divorce laws.First of all, Davis introduced the laws and legislation of divorce. In the beginning, the author clarifies the roles of lawyers on the divorce that lawyers should navigate people to negotiate divorces in constructive ways. Today, lawyers are focused to involve in preparing for the case; moreover, they do not concern their clients’ health and mental damages from the marital problem. However, Davis urges that they are not only for solving the problem in the laws, but also for working on reconciliation of problems in the family. In addition, he compared two different laws that show dramatic differences in divorce process: “Fault laws” and “no-fault laws.” Before 1969, the fault law system determined whether a couple should divorce based on its “fault ground” that give clear reason why either one of spouses is incompatible with the continuation of the marriage. In 1969, the new was established so-called “no-fault ground” to enable to divorce simply on the decision of spouses. So, the divorce can be a respected and pursuing their individual lives.Next, Davis states possible outcomes that against the prevailing view of divorce. In one of his examples, the women’s economy system is destroyed while the men’s economic status is improved. Women who divorce were not able to achieve the same standard of living that they had enjoyed during their marriages. Moreover, it is mostly the mom who raises their children after the divorce. So, most divorces entail the absence of a father. Also, divorce can bring negative influence to their children who might encounter problems from overcoming their broken heart in childhood.Lastly, Muller Davis promotes that a change of the legislation about is needed with cooperation and reinforcement from every aspect of society in order to prevent many impulsive and premature decisions. Moreover, the legislation has to put stronger emphasis on continuing marriage rather than choosing divorce. In conclusion, he interpreted the lawyer’s roles in the divorce situation. Lawyers should try to prevent the divorce in a way to provide good environment for children. The lawyers should focus not only to increase their income through court cases but also to anticipate future life of the clients’ family.Part 3: EvaluationThe purpose of Dais’s article is to offer a chance to rethink about the divorce and give some essential information about the divorce laws in society. Then, he compares and contrasts “fault ground” and “non-fault ground” for divorce. Also, he suggests lawyer’s role in the divorce situation. He has the strengths in clarifying the definition of divorce laws related words. He uses clear definitions and examples to audiences even the people who are not familiar with laws can understand. For example, he gives the specific time in enacting of the laws and represents result of that law. Also, he discovers the real meaning of marriage life and why divorce can be happened. Moreover, he works to give certain circumstances that might be encountered after the divorce. For example, he gives specific research result about the women’s can be more suffered from economy system than men. In addition, the children who suffered from parents’ divorce have higher risk of health-related and criminal issues than children who never experienced divorce in their family. However, Davis also has some weaknesses in his article that he has some biases. He does not clearly state whether the divorce can be a solution about the marital problem or not. In other words, his article doesn’t have counter-argument. Therefore, in his article, he needs a counterargument to make his article more convincing. Also, the structure of his article might bring confusion to its readers. In addition, he also needs to add some outside sources other than using his own data from his own research.Reading Journal #1
Compare & Contrast Essay(Final Draft).November 9, 2011.The first time when I came to the U.S.A, I had a chance to attend English Worship in my church and I was shocked. I have been serving in traditional Korean church which the format of the service is very formal; however, the English ministry worship service is rather casual. For example, the Korean traditional church members wear formal clothes; on the other hand, the English ministry people tend to wear casual style clothes. Even the church leaders wear casual style clothes and wear the flip-flop when they are preached a sermon. This essay seeks to explore a few of comparison of the different leader’s role in Church between the U.S. and Korea, such as clothing, relation with church member, and perspective toward the responsibility of pastoral job.First of all, the church leader’s clothing is very different between American and Korean churches. The culture has tremendous effect on each church. Korean church culture is based on the Confucianism culture. In Korea, manner and etiquette is very important matter in our lives. Korean Christians are taught to care their behaviors and appearances because we believe that it is a way to represent our sincere heart and mind; thus, it is etiquette for God. So, the pastors wear the suit or formal style cloth all day in the church. On the other hand, American pastors are more focused on their heart than their appearance. So, they are wear the informal style cloths and they are not concerned about their cloths. One of the main reasons for their difference in the worship style is from the difference of the mainstream denominations. When the Christianity was introduced in Korea, the missionaries are from the Presbyterian where the churches tend to be formal and conservative. However, Baptist church is the majority in the United States. They are more focused on the mind than behavior. Nonetheless, we cannot debate both churches are focused on faith but it is only expressed in different ways depends on their cultures.Secondly, the pastoral relation with church members is different in each country. When I was attending the Korean church, I never visited pastor’s house. When we talk to with pastor, we usually have met in the church or church member’s house. They are used to get served from the church members. Also, church members really admire the pastor and serve their pastors with all their hearts. It almost seems like that church members and leaders have put in different rank and social status. Furthermore, when we talk to with pastor in Korea, we are using formal language. Even though the pastor is younger than other church members, church members give respect to the church leaders. However, the U.S. pastor is more familiar with church members than Korea. Sometimes, they invite their church members in their home and take care of their saints. So, pastor in the United States serves their church members. In spite of the church members respect their church leaders; they do not serve their leaders as much as the Korean Christians. In addition, they even use the informal language during the conversation.Lastly, they have different perspective toward the responsibility of pastoral job. In Korea, the church law states that the pastor cannot get another job. They are only asked to focus on the ministry and take care of their saints and church. In other words, Korean Christians think the common world should be separated from Christian society. In Korean society, if the pastor gets another job, church members blame for the wrongdoing and sometimes deprived pastors’ qualification. Moreover, the pastor should set an example for others in morality. So, sometimes they are sacred by church members. In the U.S.A. the pastor commonly get another job, conversely, depending on their need get another job. They serve the church on Sunday, whereas in the week day they are worked in common society. In America, the barrier which separates world and Christian society is collapsed. When the church leaders need get another job or own their business, they admit and are common. Besides, the pastor mainly thought that church leaders are not a job; they are volunteers for God and church members. In conclusion, we explored to church leader role is very different to Korea and America. The first time when I come to the U.S.A. and serviced in the English worship service, I have some prejudice of their behavior. However, as times goes by, I can understand their worship style and I recognized different culture and different worship style. Also, I saw different church leader’s thought and behavior. So I can conclude not only is the Korea pastor but also American pastor are deeply worship to God.
