Modern TimesBefore I saw this movie, I didn’t know what story is about. The only thing I remembered was the scene Chaplin wanders around the inside of the factory. Even I realized this movie’s title through Kim Byung-man’s performance. Though Charlie Chaplin’s fame is world-famous and his movies are worth watching, I felt shame at watching with deep concern later. As its title is ‘Modern Times’ the movie was about modernization and workers who worked as machines. As I expected his acting is admirable but it made me smile bitter because of its serious suggestion. In my opinion the event which happens in the factory implies the theme of this film the most. The factory owner keeps an eye on every laborer’s movements through monitors and workers only work within limited time and space. What was worse, he began to tighten a screw everything which looks like screw like a secretary’s buttons. Literally he is mad at working! I cannot help laughing while it must be pitiful and uncomfortable. Moreover the owner brings the machine which helps the laborers eat to save lunchtime. It reminded me of our super-busy routine. After all, Chaplin who can be symbolized as contemporary workers shows man controlled by machines. After many great struggles, he got a job as a nighttime guard, but his reality doesn’t let him enjoy dreamy moment. The only place which he can return is a board-framed house. Even if people live in plenty in modern times, the materialism ignores humanity, dominates human and destroys human dignity. The more his gestures are comical, the more the loss and tragedy are maximized. On the whole, the contents of the movie are not that difficult and I could understand the substance comparatively because not only is it a silent movie but Chaplin’s performance is excellent in what he wants to speak for. With comic gestures his ability about linking the problems which occur in modern times is amazing and also this is very suggestive until today. His criticism and satire on society is sharp in the movie as if he knew the problem couldn’t be cleared simply. Unemployment, workout, materialism, the gap between rich and poor are severe trouble up to this day and there is nothing to solve these problems rather it is intensified. On the other hand by making motion picture on purpose, he wants us to sympathize with harmful effect of capitalism and materialism regardless of nations, languages and ages. In addition, it also gives good lesson that we shouldn’t give up or submit to the hard world but we have to find our happiness such as the last scene. Do we have any solution to get out of reality? It’s up to our mind.
