영미문학 세미나영어영문학Seamus Heaney의 ‘At a Potato Digging’ 과Carl Sandburg의 ‘Chicago’에서 나타나는 모국을 바라보는 태도 비교시인이 작품 활동을 함에 있어서 작가의 국적, 사회적 풍토, 역사적 배경 등은 작가의 작품과 작가 성향에 중요한 영향을 미치며, 더 나아가 이는 개인의 사적인 요인 즉, 성격, 가족 환경 등에도 영향을 미치기 때문에 역사적 사실과 그로인해 시인이 갖게 되는 태도는 직접적인 연관성을 갖는다. 따라서 이 장에서는 국적에 따른 독특한 역사적 사실 및 배경이 작가에 어떠한 영향을 미치며 이것이 어떠한 형태로 작품에 나타나는지에 대해 논할 것이다. 두 시인인 Heaney와 Sandburg는 각각 아일랜드와 미국 태생으로 서로 다른 역사적 배경을 갖고 있다. 먼저 Heaney는 아일랜드 태생으로서 자신의 모국이 한때 영국의 식민지로서 오랫동안 고통 받았다는 역사를 갖고 있으며, 이는 그의 작품‘At a Potato Digging’을 통해서 그가 이러한 역사적 사실을 깊숙이 인식하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 반대로 Sandburg가 미국의 시인으로 Heaney와는 반대의 시선을 갖고 자신의 사회와 국가를 바라보고 있음을 그의 작품 ‘Chicago’를 통해 알 수 있다. 즉, Sandburg는 미국 특히, 시카고를 자신의 주제로 삼고 자신의 시에서 애정 어린 시선으로 담아내고 있다.먼저 Heaney는 ‘At a Potato Digging’에서 일꾼들이 감자밭에서 일하는 모습을 보면서 과거 아일랜드의 기근, 즉 역사적 상처를 떠올리고 모국의 상황에 대해서 가슴 아파 하고 있다. 물론 기근은 자연 재해이기 때문에 인간의 힘으로 해결하기에는 한계가 있지만, 아일랜드가 영국의 식민지였다는 역사적 사실을 고려해 볼 때 영국이 적절한 경제정책을 실행하지 않았기 때문에 상황을 더욱 악화시켰던 것으로 생각해 볼 수 있다. 그러므로 Heaney는 기근과 식민지였던 역사적 사실을 통해 모국의 상황을 안타깝게 바라보고 있다고 할 수 있겠다. “Fingers go dead in the cold(손가락들은 냉기로 차가워진다.)”라는 구절을 보면, 본래 땅, 대지라고 하는 것은 인간에게 필요한 것을 생산해 내는 어머니의 이미지가 강하다. 그러나 이러한 땅을 통해 감자를 얻고 있음에도 불구하고 일꾼들에게는 마냥 고단한 일이기만 한 것이다. 바구니를 비우기 위해 잠시 일어서서 숨을 쉬어 보지만 곧 “뒤뚱거리며 돌아서서” 돌아간다. 힘겹게 감자 덩이를 낚는 모습을 바라보는 Heaney는 기근의 역사를 다시금 떠올리게 된다. “Toughen the muscles behind their humbled knees, make a seasonal altar of the sod”라는 구절을 보면, 아일랜드의 역사를 통해 오랫동안 지속되어 온 감자 캐는 일 만큼이나 일꾼들의 다리를 단단하게 만들고 흙을 재단으로 삼게 해왔다는 것을 알 수 있다. 과거에 원시부족 사회에서는 자연을 신으로써 숭배하고 경배하는 경향이 강했는데, 그 이유는 그 당시에는 유일신이나 특정 종교가 그들의 인식 속에 존재하지 않았고, 기근과 같은 자연재해들을 방지하기 위한 하나의 방법이었다. 마찬가지로 아일랜드 사람들은 기근의 세월을 통해 일종의 두려운 감정일 것이며, 이러한 감정이 이 작품에서 흙을 경배하는 마음으로 나타난 것이다. 더욱이 가톨릭이 국교인 아일랜드에서 자신의 고통을 덜어주고 구원을 요청하기 위해 신을 직접적으로 찾고 기도하기 보다는 오히려 자연, 즉 흙에게 의지한다는 것은 그만큼 그들의 심정이 절박했던 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 더 나아가 Heaney가 느끼는 절망감은 감자들을 통해 상징화되어 나타나게 된다. Heaney에게는 감자밭에 쌓여있는 감자들이 마치 “seem the petrified hearts(굳어버린 심장)of drills”와도 같이 여겨진다. 심장이 굳어버린 다는 것은 생명이 더 이상 지속되지 않는 죽음을 의미하며 이는 기근으로 인해 기아로 죽어간 아일랜드인과 동일시된다. 즉, 아일랜드인에게 ‘감자’는 단순한 야채가 아니라 없어서는 안 될 생명과도 같은 주식이다. 그러나 대기근으로 인한 주식의 결핍은 아일랜드인의 생명 즉, 심장을 굳어버리게 만들어 버렸다.게다가 땅과 뿌리가 빚어낸 잘 영근 감자알은 작가에게 마치 “To be piled in pits; live skulls, blind-eyed(눈 먼 살아있는 두 개골)”처럼 여겨진다. 두개골이라는 것 역시 죽음을 의미하여 이는 대기근으로 인해 수백만의 아일랜드 인이 죽어갔던 역사와도 직결된다. 즉, Heaney는 감자를 통해 기아로 죽어간 수많은 아일랜드인들의 모습을 보고 있으며 감자와 그들을 동일시하고 있는 것이다. 또한 살아있는 두 개골이라는 것은 단순히 죽음을 의미하는 것뿐만 아니라 기아로 허덕이는 사람들의 모습을 상징화하여 묘사한 것이기도 하다. 살아있으나 너무 굶어서 마치 해골처럼 되어버린 모습을 보여주고 있는 것이다. 더 나아가 Heaney는 상황이 악화되어 가던 모습을 상상하게 되며 감자와 아일랜드인은 더욱 동일시된다. “The new potato...putrefied when it had lain three days in the long clay pit. Millions rotted along with it.”이라는 구절을 보면 감자가 썩어가는 것만큼이나 아일랜드인 역시 죽어가고 있음을 보여주고 있는 것이다. 따라서 Heaney에게는 “Hope rotted like a marrow”희망이 마치 골수처럼 썩어있는 듯이 여겨진다. 대기근이 끝나고 오랜 시간이 흐른 뒤에도 감자밭을 바라보고 있는 Heaney에게는 여전히 (“Where potato diggers are you still smell the running sore.”)코를 찌르는 것 같은 냄새가 나는 듯하다.Heaney와는 반대로 Carl Sandburg는 문명화되고 산업화된 미국 도시인 시카고의 모습을 열정적으로 보고 있으며, 다소 퇴폐적이고 거칠다고 할 수 있는 모습에서조차 긍정적이고 애정 어린 시선으로 그리고 있다. 우선, 그의 이러한 시각은 시카고의 시민들, 특히 하층계급이라고 할 수 있는 노동자들을 통해 나타난다. 어느 누구하나 관심 갖지 않는 도살자, 도구 제작자, 운송업자 등이 음지에서 묵묵히 자신이 맡은 바 최선을 다하는 모습을 보여줌으로써 그는 다소 거칠지만 활력 있는 시카고를 그리고 있는 것이다. 이는 Heaney의 시 ‘At a potato digging’에서 감자밭에서 묵묵히 일을 하는 노동자들을 통해 모국의 뼈아픈 과거를 떠올리고 그들의 고된 삶을 느끼고 있는 것과는 대조적이라고 할 수 있다. 즉, Sandburg는 비록 노동자들이 사회의 음지에 일하고 아무도 알아주는 이 없지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 그들은 활력 있으며 긍정적이고 대도시 Chicago를 움직이게 하는 원동력으로써 보고 있는 것이다. 이러한 그의 생각은 ‘City of the Big Shoulder’라는 구절을 통해 알 수 있다. 크고 넓은 어깨는 보통 강한 남성의 이미지를 상징하기도 하는데 이는 건장하고 튼튼한 노동자들의 모습과도 같다. 즉, 시카고라는 도시는 건장하고 든든한 노동자들의 어깨 위에 있으므로 절대 무너지거나 퇴락할 수 없다는 일종의 그들에 대한 작가의 신뢰감을 표현하는 부분이라 하겠다. 그러나 어떤 이들은 이 노동자들에게서 또는 대도시 Chicago에 대해서 불평과 불만의 목소리를 내기도 한다. 왜냐하면, 도시가 성장하면 성장 할수록 그 이면에서도 역시 퇴폐적이고 부정적인 모습이 함께 발전하기 때문이다. 이러한 모습은 시 속에서 ‘화장한 여인들이 야릇한 등불 아래에서 순진한 소년들을 꼬드기는 모습’이나, ‘굶주린 젊은 여인과 그 아이’ 그리고 ‘밤거리를 누비는 총 잡이’ 등으로 나타난다. 마치 Chicago라는 도시가 직접 얘기하는 형식으로 쓰인 이 시는 자신의 그러한 모습조차도 당당한 태도로 얘기하고 있으며 전혀 부끄러워하지 않는 다는 것을 보여준다. 왜냐하면 모든 일에는 양면이 존재하는 것이며, 앞서 얘기한 모든 상황 역시 사람이 살아가는 하나의 방식이며 다양한 삶의 모습인 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 도시 Chicago는 전혀 부끄러워할 것이 없는 것이다. 오히려 당당하게 발전하고 성장해가는 자신의 모습과 마찬가지로 이것 역시 자신의 일부분이기 때문이다. 물론 Chicago라는 대도시가 말하고 있는 듯하지만 이것은 작가의 생각이고 이는 다음의 구절에서 더 분명하게 나타난다. “Lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning.”이 구절을 살펴보면 분명 Chicago에는 남이 보기에는 흉하거나 거칠다고 할 수 있는 부분이 존재하지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 당당하며 용기 있고 영리하며 투박하여 인간적인 모습들이 존재하고 있는 것이다.더 나아가 생각한다면, 이러한 모습은 사람이 살아가면서 가장 중요하게 갖춰야 할 요소들이기도 하다. 온실 속의 화초처럼 살면서는 실제로 마주치게 되는 삶의 거친 상황에 적절하고 지혜롭게 대응할 수 없다. 오히려 용기 있고 다소 거칠지만 당당한 태도가 현실과 살면서 부딪히게 되는 예상치 못한 일들을 대하는데 필요하다고 할 수 있는 것이다. 이는 미국인들이 오랫동안 강조해왔던 ‘프런티어 정신(Frontier spirit)’과도 밀접하게 관련되어 있다고 할 수 있겠다. Sandburg는 미국의 정신적 가치라고 할 수 있는 프런티어 정신을 Chicago의 거칠고 투박하지만 용기 있고 영리한 모습을 통해서 보여주고 있다.

While newgenerations appear is going fall down, people’s life span is increasing. It meansthat Korea society is becoming a graying society. This problem is very seriousproblem and it is connected directly with national crisis because the fallingbirthrate can be the reason of labor deficit and then labor deficit can be affecton national economy and the social security. Therefore, creased; some women do not want to have many babies. Also, these womenhave focused on their satisfaction like career as a professional worker and theirbeauty or physical figure. Therefore, some people though that if they have baby,their beautiful figure and career should be ruined. That means, as the quality oflife has improved, most people, especially women, emphasized on theirindividual benefits and relatively treat the matter of having baby lightly.Moreover some married couples have decided to reduce the size of their familyfor decades because the most people have recognized that brining up babiesvery hard in Korea society these days. Hence, some sterility couple decides to hire surrogate motherand even married women’s mother tried to be a surrogate mother for their girls.Actually, Rosinete Palmeira Serrao, a 51-year-old woman became thesurrogate mother for her daughter, Claudia Michelle, had given birth to twingrandhodefinitely disagree with this idea because some child who is born fromsurrogate mother could be suffered from emotional instability. Thereforewhenever we watch TV show with sitting in comfort couch, we see manybeautiful and skinny women whether we want or not. Besides, wheneverwe see these girls, most of women especially young girls feel that they arevery fat and ugly even though they lose their self-confidence because mostTV programs only shows thin, skinny and excessively beautiful girls toviewers. Therefore, young women naturally were affected and thought thatthey have to reduce their weight. Moreover strong desires about being andhaving slim or thin figure triggers most women’s excessive diet. Especially,some women get some disease by not eating food wholly or by eating somepills which is known for reducinnd graphical materials. At first, theyintroduced some harmful influences caused by immoderate exercise withoutany food. Especially some women choose thebulimia because they regard it as the best easy way to weight-loss and theycan not give up not only reducing weight but also pleasure moment of eatingdelicious food. Accordingly, it can be tell that anorexia and bulimia arevery serious problem because it show excessive obsession over food.Therefore, these could be classified a kind of mental disease. For thesereasons doctor warned that bulimia couldlevised with outstanding messages, itseffect will be good and affect to people especially women who are sufferingfrom diverse physical and mental disease. Therefore, this way should bevery effective to change people’s bias toward beauty’s meaning. To givestrong impacts to viewers contents should be organized such as “Realbeauty is inside, not out-ward appearance.” or “Men! Remember. You willbe happy only 3 years living with beautiful and slender woman. You will behappy just 30years living with kind woman. You and your family will behappy for 3 generations living with wisdom woman.” Especially, lastmessage is for men because men’s prejudice or bias about women could bethe one of the reasons why women morbidly trigger to reduce their weight.To be specific, most men rightly consider that most women are slim or thineven though they said that woman who have ordinary figure and lookshealthy is fat. Therefore, public campaign should appeal to men to changetheir thought. These messages have mefinally this group gainedthe recognition and popularity of public. Therefore, it could be say that thisgroup have devoted to changing people’s mind. Nevertheless some womenwho have fat and normal figure still become laughingstock in front of manypeople. Whenever they have a sense of shame, they urgently feel the needof reducing weight or taking a diet pill. Hence, people who working in thefield of entertainment industry such as broadcasting producers, film makers,entertainment reporters and record companies have to actively show andhire normal or fat girl without any prejudice. However these people mightworry about normal girl’s appearance because they are most care aboutpublic’s eyes and program’s success. In spite of their concern, as above-mentioned public recognized ‘Big Mama’ for a good singer group simplybecause of their outstanding talent and ability. Therefore they do not needto worry about that. Of course, some plump and normal entertainers oftenappeared in TV show but these wmore she was an old maiden and got hurtfrom men. However, she met nice and handsome man and found a real love.At that time, this soap drama was most popular and attracted people’sattention and sympathy because it was talking about life of normal woman.If many broadcasting and film maker use and admit to appearance, mostviewers will be affected and change their prejudice.Most women especially young girl extreme diet because they ferventlywant to be thin and skinny like TV stars. Therefore they do extremeexercise without any food, take a diet pill or vomit after full eating.However excessive dieting is very harmful to not only physical but alsomentally. By doing this, they suffer from various diseases such as anemia,irregularity and even anorexia or voracious problem. To solve theseproblem people should change their mind. At first, well-informed people likedoctors should provide some motivations to change people’s wrong diet waywith appropriate explanation about harmful excessive dietingfe.

Because Korea was traditionally agrariansociety, most family was big family. Therefore, most people have chanceto close their senior in the dining table from the childhood in this society.By doing this, most people naturally learned from their senior and grewup be well mannered. It means that Korean has had its own dining culturefor a long time. However, as the society has been more developed, amember of family more and more reduce and some people usually eatoutside. Because some people busy, they do not have enoulite.Home dining offers special comfortable to member of the family.Some people like having dinner with their friends at the good restaurantswhich has luxury atmosphere and chat away with their friends while theyare eating. On the other hand, only special comfortable or relaxedcommunication could be made around the dining table at home than theoutside. Because as the society is more developed, most employees aresuffered from extreme stress.
