Describe what was surprising in each of the texts you have studiedExplain why the writer of each text used surprise as a featureIn the short story ‘His First Ball’ and poem ‘Dinner with the cannibal’ both written by Witi Ihimaera, there were quite a few surprises which had been used as a feature by the author to convey the themes of the texts, which are cultural Imperialism in the poem and cultural alienation in the short story.A surprising in the short story ‘His First Ball’ is the reaction of the Maori boy, Tuta when he received an invitation letter to a government house. Although this invitation is an honor, Tuta’s reaction shows the opposite. He believes that the letter is a fake and tries to avoid the situation; he says ‘Boy, just wait till I get the joker who sent this.’ The author has used this event to show the audience how Maori people think about the upper European society and the reluctant attitude of Maori people towards socializing with them. Another important surprise used in the short story is the cultural alienation between European culture and Maori culture. When Tuta decides to go to the ball, he soon starts to learn about the table manner and etiquettes. He finds them quite difficult to learn and he says ‘If you asked me, this etiquette business is stupid. And no wonder they have to have banquets. They eat so slowly.’ He complains and doesn’t understand about the way that European people eat and act, Tuta’s experience shows that the reason why Europeans and Maori do not get along is that they don’t understand about each others culture. In the poem ‘Dinner with the Cannibal’, the cruel description of the Maori person being eaten by the cannibal is used as a surprise. They are used to describe how Maori felt about their culture destroyed by European imperialism. The Maori says ‘I watched him suck the marrow of my bone and tear the meat that once had made me mobile… not one sweet morsel of me dropped from his lips’ he couldn’t do anything about what the cannibal was doing to him although he knows that he needs to stop him, this shows that how Maori people felt like helpless victims of the Treaty. Another gruesome imagery that shocks the readers is this; ‘the snap and wrench of bone from socket sounded louder than I expected, but the agony was slight’. The impact of this scene makes the readers to feel like they are watching the person being eaten and makes them to sink into the poem. The reason why the writer has used surprise as a feature is that it makes the readers to think more about the texts and it works as an essence to help them to continue read the texts.Surprising in each texts, ‘ His First Ball’ and ‘Dinner with the Cannibal’ is related to the themes of the texts as it describes the detailed descriptions of how each character in different texts felt about things that were happening in the texts. The writer has used surprise as a feature to help readers to feel what the characters in the texts felt like and it also help them to think deeper about what is happening in the texts.
This letter is written in regard to the article about the Simpsons movie piracy. I have been working in the movie industry for over 15 years and I understand how difficult it is to complete one movie. The process of making movies may seem very simple to the viewers who only see the completed movie that normally runs between two and three hours however it takes an enormous amount of efforts; it takes months with thousands of staff and also billions of dollars are spent to complete a single film. What I really don’t understand is that people have been continuously
