Pros and Cons of StereotypeWhat is a stereotype? It is a fixed, commonly shared idea or image about a person or a group. It seems that a stereotype is based on an oversimplification of some observed or imagined trait of behavior or appearance, not a genuine reflection of ideas that reveal characteristics one group actually has. Stereotypes can be either positive or negative. Nevertheless, most stereotypes can lead people to ignore the uniqueness of individuals by painting all members of a group with the same brush. And they are occasionally linked to some kinds of prejudice. For example, In Judith Ortiz Cofer’s essay “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria”, he thought she was a Latino girl because of her appearance and the name. And another boy who tried to kiss her in a dance party had a stereotype that Latin girls are supposed to mature early. Then, what are pros and cons of stereotypes? And how should we accept it?First of all, commonly, people define something before they see it not after they see it. This might reflect a good conclusion. If people meet someone or something that they have never seen or experienced before, stereotypes help people to judge what kind of characteristic it has or how to deal with it. For instance, if you get an opportunity to have dinner with an Asian business partner, you would be politer and act more respectfully to succeed in a transaction. A GPS(Global Positioning System) or back-up sensor on a car is another good example of using the stereotype that women are bad drivers, which is proved scientifically. That is why it was spread out regardless of gender because of its comfortableness. But, not all stereotypes are correct. Most stereotypes are exaggerated or over-generalized to give people strong feelings, not involving true or false though there are some stereotypes supported by experiences. To define a character of a person by blood type was a fad in Korea, which was a sort of typical stereotype. How can people be categorized by four types; AB, A, B, and O? For another example, black people are considered as dirty people, which also can be an example of false stereotypes because African-Americans on average exhibit more concern about cleanliness than white people. Black people spend more money on cleaning supplies and comparable amounts on personal care products than white people. As this proverb “Don’t judge a book by its cover” says, when a stereotype, which is fixed as a standard of judgment, is widely abused, you would have an inappropriate view. But if you use it accepting a particular value of individual uniqueness, wouldn’t it be great to elicit better outcome?
Sicko 2Just a few months before America’s or the whole world’s presidential election, the fighting between two presidential candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain, is getting more and more dramatic. On every TV news program, they report on who the candidates have chosen for their vice president, and how that has affected their approval rating. However Americans are not only focusing on who they are going to get as a vice presidential candidate, but also on their policies. They are especially interested in the health care system because, according to Wikipedia, “The United States is the only wealthy, industrialized nation that does not provide universal health care” even though in most developed countries and many developing countries health care is provided to everyone regardless of their ability to pay. Another reason why they concentrate on it is they have been spending a lot of money for health insurance. Once the senator, Hillary Clinton, gave a speech. She said that “I will alwait. He thinks that the health insurance would be better if it was not supported by citizens’ taxes. However, I think the reality is totally different from his contention. If the health insurance system is run by private companies, it will lead to an increase citizens’ financial burden of health insurance, deteriorate the standard of medical treatment, and cause serious harm to the nation.First of all, it should not be privatized by private corporations to diminish nation’s financial problem that people face with. In the documentary film, Sicko by Micheal Moore, Rick shows up in the beginning of the movie, accidentally sawed off the tops of two of his fingers. Unfortunately his first thought is about how much he is going to pay in cash for treatment not about going to an emergency room as soon as possible. He thought about which finger he should choose to reattach between the middle finger for $ 60,000 or the ring finger for $12,000. Because he is middle class family cannot afford the private insurance in U.S. is highest, 36.8%, compared with 12.6% in Canada, 0% in Sweden, and 0% in U.K. As you can see these numerical values, the countries that are adopting a national health service system have less costs for health coverage. The authors of Financial Burden of Health Care said that “Financial burdens have increased to the point at which private insurance is no longer able to provide financial protection for an increasing number of families” (J. S. Banthin ). If what has happened in U.S., also happens in Korea, then a lot of people will go bankrupt and they will not able to get any insurance benefitsSecondly, if health insurance is privatized, the quality of medical treatment will become worse. According to Wikipedia, American’s life expectancy is shorter when compared with other developed countries. The U.S. life expectancy is 77.5 versus 80.5 Canadians, France 79.5, Japan 82.5, and U.K.79.5, etc. Even though French enjoy their wine, their cigarettes and their fatty her to take care of herself. Needles to say, A nation is supposed to protect and look after its citizens. But America is a nation that dumps its citizens like so much garbage on the side of the curb because they can’t pay the hospital bill. This might be Korea’s future in a few years after privatization of the health care system. Finally, Korea would suffer if health insurance were to be discontinued. Huge drug and health insurance corporations would corrupt the political system by using bribes to influence Congress to pass laws favorable to them. And the companies will try to make more money from citizens by refusing to offer insurance benefits. Let’s just say it was privatized. Then, people who have high income would change their health insurance to private companies and automatically aggravation of national medical finance will appear. Afterward the government won’t be able to offer an equal standard of health care for everyone, especially the poor. The next expected result is decreahas publicly sponsored and regulated health care. In France, people consider it is an absolute truth that people who are better should pay for those who are worse off. So they pay the taxes for poorer people to get free education, free medical care, and even government-issued nannies. In England, doctors who work under national healthcare system get paid by government. They get paid based on their performance. The better they do for their patients the more they get paid. If they get more people that are their patients to stop smoking, then they will get more money. What a great system! It is hard to believe that the national hospitals even compensate them for the money they spent to come for treatment. The Cuban people have a free universal health care as well even though Cuba, the only communist country, is a little island in the Caribbean with no resources. However, they have a health care system as convenient as European countries do. If you go to the national hospital, you don’t hav7.
The First Begging in My Whole LifeDuring the first semester in Hunter college, I planned to travel Victoria and Vancouver in Canada and Seattle in Washington during the spring break. Because my two friends from university in Korea lived in Seattle and one cousin was near Vancouver, I chose those places. As soon as the first quarter was over, I headed for Victoria by airplane via Toronto and Vancouver. I had a really great time seeing beautiful scenery and landmarks. To see well-arranged houses and gardens was an opportunity to feel how enthusiastic Canadians are about gardening. I also ate fresh seafood, bought some souvenirs to remember the landmarks I visited, took some gorgeous pictures in Canada. It couldn’t be better. But the problems behan in Seattle. When I arrived there, my friend named JaeYun was waiting for me. We were so close but haven’t seen each other for a long time. We hung out in downtown, enjoyed delicious seafood, and drank in the inn near University of Washington. The second day, I realized my debit card was gone. I guessed I left my debit card in the ATM machine I used and somebody stole it right before I went to Microsoft headquarters. The point was I didn’t have enough cash or other debit, credit cards to stay for two more days. So I couldn’t help borrowing some cash from my friend. On the third day, I was supposed to visit “Space Needle”, which looks like needle and people can see a whole view of Seattle from the top of it. I suggested to JaeYun going together but he said “I’m sorry but I have been there before” I didn’t want to make him uncomfortable. So I just said, “Okay, fine. But would you borrow fourteen dollars for the entrance fee? Now, I have just four dollars for the monorail fee.” He immediately gave me ten dollars, I paid four dollars for a round trip ticket to take a monorail to go to the Space Needle. When I got there, I was upset and confused because my guide book obviously told me it was $14, but “$16” was put down as an entrance fee on the billboard. So I said, “Oh damn it, what should I do? Do I have to go back to hotel borrow more money and then come back again?” But it was 10:20. It’s supposed to be closed at 11p.m. In addition, I had no opportunity to come here again because of tomorrow’s flight to New York. Finally, I decided to do something that I have never done before. It was begging. I was so ashamed and embarrassed but there was no way to enter. At that time, there were some people at the taxi stop who were going out from Space Needle. I saw someone who looked like Korean and approached. They were speaking Korean. I mustered up my courage and I talk to them about what happened with me and asked to give me just 2 dollars. But they said they didn’t have any change as if they seemed to look down on me. To make matters worse, people who were near me started looking at me weird like homeless even though I didn’t look like that; I wore casual jeans, polo T-shirt. So I couldn’t beg anymore. However, as a saying said that god helps those who help themselves, an idea that I have 10 Canadian dollars came into my mind. I thought cashier might exchange it for U.S dollar or accept it. I asked the cashier and he said that he would exchange it. After all, I went up there, the night view of Seattle from Space Needle was as splendid as the night view of New York City from Empire State Building. Even if the process to go up and the begging were so hard and shameful, now it became an unforgettable memory to me.
Two different types of natureMost people have trouble thinking about “Which product is better than another one?” or “Where is good a city for a trip?” or “What kind of foods you want to eat?” When we wanted something to do, we were always thinking carefully before action, and we remembered good memories such as the trip, friends and school life, etc. Also I have a good memory when I was an elementary school student; I had a kind of earth science class once a week. In the class, we sometimes discussed something with classmates; for example, “which do you like the Sea or the Mountain?” Every student chose one, and we sat separately in the class. I think I chose the sea. Then we started discussion about one topic. I have already passed ten years, but I remembered well the discussion “Sea or Mountain” still now.On one side, the Sea. The Sea is very popular in the class, and some of students chose this side. First, the good points are seafood is very delicious, good for health and it has very nutritious to humans. Second, there are many marine sports such as water skiing, yachting race and jet skiing. Also the ocean joins to the other countries, so we are possible to get to there to use the Sea. In addition, we can see different types of sea such as clam Sea, vast expanse of waters and blue expanse of water. I went to the seaside for the summer vacation with my friends. We spent our holidays by the East Sea. We ate a lot of seafood, played swim and campfire, we also have enjoyed taking over our school days. I enjoyed at that time. The memory always haunts me. However, it is very difficult to get water, land materials in the sea and there are also have disaster such as typhoon, oil pollution and seismic wave. These facts are big problems and weak points of Sea.The other side is the Mountain. The Mountain is also popular in the class, some students including me insisted I like Mountain with some reasons. First, there are river and lake. Second, we can hunt animals. Then there are a lot of trees. In the river and lake, various kinds of fish or some animals exist; also we can drink the natural water. In addition, we can see a lot of trees in the mountain that heals us when we visit there with natural negative ions. Then various kinds of animals live in the mountain. The existence is very beautiful and wonderful that gives from nature, and their life helps us human with food. The mountain gives us some good things for us. By the way, there are defective things in the mountain for example, seafood and salt. People need some minerals from the Ocean. Then the mountain brings us a big disaster that is awful fact and weak point. There are the same and different points between the Mountain and the Sea. Each of them has some good things. Each side has a wonderful living thing from nature. The Mountain has a nature that is very necessary and essential for human, but the Sea is very difficult to get water. However, the Sea also has some good things that the mountain does not. Each side has each beautiful and wonderful thing, and they give us some supplies. Then people are fascinated and cannot live without that. The Mountain and Sea has merits and demerits. On the other hand, we need to live together with their disaster also. Finally, I suppose we could not find any reasons which one is better between Mountain and Sea at that time, but we expanded a great debate as a 10 or 11 year old. Then some students showed temper and anger. Now I think they did a good job at that time with my proud. Moreover, the result is nobody knows, and also I do not know which the best one still is now. I suppose some of them will say the same thing as before if I ask about that my. Then, I will say I like the Mountain with the same reasons as before. This memory is one of unforgettable memories in my life.
