I watched the movie called ‘방가?방가!’. It is about the unemployed Korean guy, who looks like Bhutani, facing the problems as a foreign worker. It is a comedy movie and I laughed a lot but I couldn’t just laugh because it shows our unreasonable and unfair discrimination against foreign workers. While I was watching this movie, I didn’t notice that the title of this movie has the so important message to Koreans. Why are there a question mark and an exclamation mark? Is that a mistake? I guess the question mark shows that we are not welcoming people to foreigners, who are not familiar with asking ‘Hello, how are you?’ to strangers and the exclamation mark shows that it is time that we should be welcoming people to foreigners, who are familiar with asking ‘ Hello, how are you? to other people. Some people say Korea is a developed country ,but when it comes to multicultural society, I would say Korea is not. We sometimes emphasize that Korea is a single race country, which may separate us from others. Being separated from others is not good for us to live in Globalization era. According to the survey conducted ,in 2009, by Korea Immigration Service, there are more than one million foreigners living in Korea. I think it is time that we should accept that Korea is not a single one any more.Fortunately, we have begun to accept that we have to take a step to become a ‘Multicultural Country’. We’ve started to have open minds to biracial people and foreigners. For instance, we welcomed Daniel Henney and some biracial sports stars, even we are crazy about them and there are some steps to solve multi-cultural families’ problems too. However, there are lots of foreign workers being discriminated. It seems to me we often apply a ‘Double Standard’ to foreign workers. I know there are some movements to solve problems of foreigners such as ‘Working under bad conditions’, ‘Discrimination’ and so on. But thoses are not that sincere steps. Even worse our government is just showing that ‘We are kind of trying to solve the problems.’ Our government has to try to do its best to solve the problems more actively, widely and sincerely. In fact, foreign workers benefit the Korean economy as they work in ‘3D work places’ , which affects the competiveness of export products cost. Without them, we would not be called as a ‘Developed country’, which can be controversial. Many foreign workers work under unfair and insecure working conditions. What is worse, some Korean employers exploit and even abuse them. That’s ridiculous because just about 30 years ago Korean workers were discriminated on other countries, still it is going on. So at that time they called out against discrimination but have a look at us now. We are doing the same thing to foreign workers who should be treated fairly as we had called out not only because of economic grounds but also because of humanitarian grounds. We have to treat others the way that we want to be treated. That is the way that we should take to be alive in Global World. To be alive in global era, we should take ‘Tolerance’ and remember that racial diversities can make Korea stronger economically and culturally.
