Inactive Korean Students in ClassIn my British and American essay’s class, the professor had always told students her wish that they were more active in her classes. This is because when she asked questions to them, only few of them answered that, even after somewhat long silence. Meanwhile, one of my friends, Mi-young studying abroad talked a lot about a trouble in adapting to her most classes whose atmosphere was greatly active and far different from Korean ones she had taken. She totally felt a sense of oppression in frequently expressing her opinion in her classes. In this way, many Korean students feel difficult about that like her. Why do they feel like this? There are three causes for them to express their opinion less than western students in classes: little opportunity to learn how to express their opinion, different cultural perspective on showing strong view and their temperamentally introversion.First of all, there is little opportunity for Korean students to learn how to express their opinion. In their middle and high school classes, most of them had scarcely learned systemically skills of telling their thought in public. Moreover, in terms of the way of teaching, there are few activities to be required in most classes where they could participate. In other words, most class’ time was spent on a teacher’s explanation about a topic which is scheduled to be dealt with in the class, letting the students just sit their chair, listen the teacher’s lecture and take note. Thus, during the precious time when they could exercise skills of showing their own view, they could not do anything in such classes. This way of teaching disturbs them to improve skills.Secondly, in terms of cultural view, expressing opinion strongly is often regarded as rude or impolite in Korea. In Korean culture affected by Confucianism since long before, not strongly showing one’s own opinion was considered to be modest and polite. In addition, agreement with the majority has had a great value in the culture. In the discussion class, for example, even though a student wants to tell a different suggestion for a moment, he or she soon gives up the desire in the situation where many of them are agreeing with one idea. Consequently, most students do not feel much necessary to suggest their own opinion plainly in their class.Finally, in general, Korean students tend to be shyer temperamentally than western ones. In terms of temperamental personality, Asian people have a tendency to be more introvert. It could be supported by statistical evidences. A study conducted by some psychologists show us the fact that the scores presenting the degree of extroversion of Asian people are quite lower than western people. As a result, many Korean students mind talking in the public and rather enjoy writing their thought on the paper or talking in front of small people.In conclusion, a small amount of opportunities to practice their speaking skills in public, cultural disagreement with strong insistence, and their temperamental introversion cause Korean students to less participate in class. Accordingly, teachers who teach them had better encourage them to improve their weakness with considering these three things.

욕망의 대상 beauty서론인간은 아름다운 것을 사랑한다. 인간은 아름답지 않은 것 보다 아름다운 것을 보고 싶어 하고, 아름다운 것을 갖고 싶고, 아름답게 되고 싶다. 그렇다. ‘뷰티’는 필연적으로 욕망을 수반한다. 인간은 많은 것에서 아름다움을 느낀다. 우리는 신체적으로 아름다운 여성을 볼 때뿐만 아니라, 시각장애인의 피아노 연주를 들으면서도 아름다움을 느끼며, 긴 세월로 주름이 자글자글한 노인의 얼굴에서 아름다움을 느낄 수도 있다. 그러나 수많은 ‘뷰티’들 중에 그 욕망을 갈구하는 대상으로 하여금 어떤 ‘뷰티’보다도 강렬한 정서를 느끼게 하며 그것을 얻기 위해서 짧게는 몇 년, 길게는 평생을 추구하게 만드는 ‘뷰티’가 있다. 이러한 ‘뷰티’는 그 개인의 무의식적이고 근본적인 욕망을 반영한다. 그래서 우리는 이러한 욕망에 따라 각기 다른 ‘뷰티’를 추구하고, 그것을 가지기 위해 다른 삶을 살아간다. 그렇다면 한 인간의 근본적인 욕망과도 연결되는 이 ‘뷰티’는 어디에서 어떻게 생겨나는 것일까?예로부터 욕망의 발생에 관한 많은 의견들이 있었다. 프랑스의 사상가 루소는 18세기 ‘사회계약설’을 주장하면서 인간의 욕망에 대해서 언급하였는데, 그는 인간은 선천적으로 욕망을 추구하는 존재이기 때문에 이러한 인간의 욕망과 자유를 제한하지 않으면 사회가 파괴되므로 이를 막기 위해서 ‘사회계약’을 맺어야 한다고 생각했다. 여기에서는 인간은 본래 욕망을 갖고 태어나는 존재이다. 약 200년 후 정신분석학자 라크 자캉은 욕망은 결핍에서 비롯된다고 생각하였다. 그러므로 인간은 욕망을 가지고 태어나기 보다는 결핍을 경험함으로써 욕망을 갖게 되는 존재이다. 많은 법과 사회규범이 존재하여 일정한 한계 내에서 살아가야 하는 현대 사회에서는 라캉의 말이 더 그럴듯하게 들린다. 금지와 법이 오히려 욕망을 낳을 수도 있다는 것이다.(권택영,감각의 제국,2001,p123) 실제로 손쉽게 가질 수 있는 것들 보다는 제한이 따르고 가질 수 없는 것 일수록 더 욕망을 자극 하는 법이다. 이렇게 가게 된다. 그렇다고 해서 반드시 이 ‘뷰티’가 화려한 것을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 그 개인의 손상과 무능함과 연결되는 심한 정도의 결핍은 환경과 개인의 기질, 가치관 등 다양한 요인이 결합되어 생기는 개인적인 것이므로 사람마다 각기 다양하다. 그러므로 산에서 자신을 수양하면서 무욕의 삶을 사는 스님은 그 개인 고유의 결핍으로 인해서 무욕의 욕망(?)이라는 것을 ‘뷰티’ 로 여기고 살아가는 사람이다.영화 ‘아메리칸 뷰티’는 많은 인물들의 복잡한 관계를 그리고 있다. 가장인 레스터, 아내인 캐롤린, 딸인 제인으로 구성되는 번햄 가족은 화목하지 못한 가족이다. 서로에 대한 애정도 없고 신뢰도 없다. 이런 가정에서, 레스터는 제니의 친구인 안젤라를 원하고, 캐롤린은 버디와 불륜관계를 가지고, 제니와 릭키는 서로를 좋아하지만 둘 다 가정에 정을 붙이지 못한다. 안젤라와 제니는 친구이긴 하지만, 제니는 안젤라에게 항상 열등의식을 느끼고, 안젤라는 그녀가 돋보이기 위해 제니를 데리고 다닌다. 릭키의 아버지인 핏츠 대령은 그의 아들 릭키와 굉장히 표면적이고 불안한 관계를 맺고 있으며, 이런 그들의 관계는 결국 릭키가 집을 나가게 되고, 핏츠 대령은 레스터에게 자신의 성적선호를 커밍아웃하면서 구애하지만 거절당하고, 결국에는 그를 총으로 쏘아 죽이게 된다. 영화 내 모든 인물들이 맺고 있는 관계들은 매우 다양하고 복잡한 양상을 띠고 있지만, 그 내면에는 모두 각자의 근본적인 욕망이 숨겨져 있다. 그리고 우리는 영화 전반을 통해서 각 인물들에게 ‘뷰티’로 작용하는 것의 실체를 엿볼 수 있다. 이 ‘뷰티’의 존재는 그들이 보여주는 일련의 행동들을 설명하는 근간을 이룰 수 있을 것이다.본론지금부터 이 영화에서 가장 많은 부분을 다루는 3명의 인물인 레스터와 캐롤린, 릭키의 ‘뷰티’를 분석해 보겠다.1. 레스터레스터는 가장으로서 힘도 지위도 상실했다. 그는 경제적으로도 무능력하며 이는 아내 캐롤린에게서 인정받지 못함으로 귀결되고, 무능력한 남편으로서 그는 아내와 수 년간 성관계도 갖지이런 상태인 그에게 그 자신의 존재에 대한 긍정적인 자아상을 보충해주는 곳이 다른 곳에 존재하는가 하면 안타깝게도 어디에도 없는 상태라고 할 수 있다. 가정에 매우 소홀히 보이는 그가 직장에서 자신의 일에 너무 열중하기 때문이라면 다행이겠건만 그는 직장에서도 전혀 인정받지 못한다. 저널리스트로 14년을 일했지만 만년 그 자리이고 월급도 쥐꼬리만하다. 그 자신은 열심히 일했다고 생각이 드는데 돌아오는 것은 결국 해고의 구실을 만들려고 하는 회사일 뿐이다. 그의 상태는 현재 심각한 자아상의 손상으로 거의 죽어있는 거나 다름없는 상태인 것이다. 그는 그가 일을 그만 둔 것에 대해서 식탁에서 꽥꽥 대는 아내와, 그냥 자리를 떠나버리려는 제인에게 이렇게 말한다. “마치 내가 없는 것처럼 대하는 것에 지치고 진절머리 난다. 내가 단지 원하는 것은 동등한 대우이다. (I am sick and tired of being treated like I do not exist. All I want is the same courtesy.)” 그는 이런 자신의 존재감이 어디에도 존재하지 않는 존재감의 결핍 때문에 고통 받았던 것이다. 그리고 단지 샤워 중에 자위를 함으로써 그의 일상에 있어서 가장 높은 지점(high point of my day)을 경험하면서 그의 존재감의 결핍감을 아주 조금이라도 해소한다. 하지만 그 이후에는 낭떠러지 일 뿐이다. 이런 그가 그 결핍의 해소의 돌파구를 성적으로 아주 매력적인 안젤라에게서 찾은 것은 결코 우연이 아니다. 그는 안젤라를 본 순간 그녀에게 매혹당하고 그녀에게 성적인 환상을 갖게 된다. 죽어있는 줄만 알았던 자신이 살아있는 사람으로서, 정상적인 남자로서 존재한 다는 것을 알게 된 레스터는 그 순간을 “마치 20년 동안 혼수상태에 빠져 있다가 깨어난 것처럼 느꼈다”라고 표현했다. 20년이라 함은 레스터가 결혼을 하고 난 후의 시간을 말하는 것이다. 그리고 그는 그의 살아난 존재감을 지속시키기 위해서, 결핍의 상태에서 벗어나기 위해서 과거로의 퇴람이었다. 그 순간으로 돌아간다면 그는 자신의 결핍된 존재감을 되찾을 수 있다. 현실에서 도저히 불가능하게 보인다면 그는 단지 과거로 돌아감으로써 다시 얻을 수 있는 것이다. (감각의 제국,p167)그래서 그는 일하던 직장도 그만두고 과거에 그랬던 것처럼 햄버거 가게에 일자리를 얻는다. 그리고 현재 가정의 경제적 여유를 이용해서 꿈의 자동차를 사고, 마리화나를 피우며, 청소년 마냥 안젤라의 한마디에 그녀와의 잠자리를 꿈꾸며 몸만들기에 돌입한다. 이런 그에게 딸의 자기친구를 그만 쳐다보았으면 좋겠다는 충고도, 아내의 불륜현장의 목격도 그에게는 중요하지 않다. 그는 20대의 레스터 이며, 그에게는 지켜야 할 가정도 의무도 없다. 아무 생각 없이 쾌락에만 몸을 맞기면서 자유를 누리던 20대의 그만 존재 할 뿐이다.그의 존재에 있어서 심각한 손상을 가져왔던 결핍은 자신의 존재감의 결핍이고 이를 충족하기 위한 욕망은 그가 그 욕망을 깨닫는 순간부터 그에게 있어 ‘뷰티’로 여겨져 그의 많은 어처구니없는 행동들을 하게 해주는 원동력이 되는 것이다. 레스터에게 있어서 아름다움의 대상은 안젤라일 수 있겠지만 그 존재는 사실 안젤라가 아니어도 되는 것이다. (심영섭,영화 내영혼의 순례,2001,p304) 그에게 필요한 것은 안젤라 자체가 아니라 그를 혼수상태에서 깨워줄 존재 자체, 계기 자체가 필요했을 뿐이다. 어쨌든 안젤라는 그에게 목표점으로 작용했고, 그는 결국 거의 안젤라와 관계를 맺기 전까지 가게 된다. 그러나 그녀에게서 처음이라는 말을 듣게 된다. 그에게 있어서 안젤라는 알건 다 아는 조숙한 10대 여자아이였지만 사실 알고 보니 허풍만 떨 줄 아는 제인과 같은 순수한 소녀였던 것이다. 그녀는 이미 타락할 대로 타락해 버린 자신과는 너무 다른 존재인 것이다.(감각의 제국, p171) 이것을 깨달은 그는 최근 자신의 뷰티로 삼았던 것이 얼마나 어리석은 방식으로 추구되었는지를 알게 된다. 그는 순수한 10대 소녀를 범함으로써 무력한 자신에서 벗어나고 존재감을 찾고자 했던 것결할 수 있다고 믿은 것이다. 그의 이러한 잘못된 방법의 선택은 마지막의 도덕적인 판단을 하면서 그 시정의 시작을 알리게 된다.2. 캐롤린아내 캐롤린은 무능한 남편이 싫고 너무 한심하다. 경제적으로 자신에게 도움이 안 되고 자신의 일에 도움을 주지도 못한다. 그녀는 집에서 항상 남편을 무시하기 일쑤지만 그녀 자신의 일도 사실 잘 풀리지 않는다. 가까스로 그럴듯한 중산층이 되었지만, 그녀는 그것에 만족하지 못하겠고 더 성공하고 싶은데, 성공하는 것이, 돈을 많이 버는 것이 너무 어렵다. 그녀는 철없이 구는 딸의 뺨을 때리면서 “네가 가진 모든 것을 둘러봐, 내가 너 만할 때는 듀플렉스에서 살았었어. 우리는 심지어 우리소유의 집도 없었어.” 라고 말한다. 그렇다. 그녀는 원래 가난 했지만 그녀의 노력으로 인해서 지금의 자리에 오른 것이다. 아마도 그녀는 어렸을 적, 그리고 결혼 후에도 심한 경제적 결핍감 즉 소유의 결핍을 느껴왔었다고 예측된다. 이런 결핍감은 그녀에게 과도하게 돈에 집착하는 욕망을 만들어 내고, 그녀에게는 돈과 성공, 소유가 ‘뷰티’로 작용하게 된 것이다. 비록 안에서는 썩어 들어가더라도, 겉으로는 반드시 이상적인 중산층의 모습을 보여주어야 한다. 그래서 그녀는 매일 아침 정원에서 장미를 꺾으면서 이웃에게 친근하게 대하고, 그 꽃을 대화도 없는 거실의 식탁 위와 온 집안 곳곳에 꽃아 둔다. 그리고 수년 동안 잠자리도 한번 가지지 않은 남편을 데리고 중개인들의 모임에 참석한다. 이런 그녀에게 같은 중개인으로서 성공하고 부를 가진 버디는 그녀가 되고 싶어 하는 ‘뷰티’를 대변하는 이상적인 존재이다. 그녀는 단순히 버디를 이성으로서 좋아하는 것이 아니다. 이혼을 당하고 와서는 “나를 미쳤다고 해도 좋지만, 성공하기 위해서는 반드시 성공의 이미지를 항상 그려야 한다는 것이 나의 철학이오.” 라고 말하는 버디를 캐롤린은 존경의 눈빛으로 쳐다본다. 그리고 그녀는 버디와 불륜을 저지른다.캐롤린은 버디처럼 성공하여 부을 얻고 싶지만, 자신의 일은 잘 되지 않고,

What is the Genuine Love?Love is everywhere. People do care about love all the time. Tons of movies, soap operas and books about different types of love are poured in everyday. Some people recognize love as a latest hope in the modern society. Behind of many miraculous events happened through history, there has been ‘love’. Likewise, the power of love is greatly strong. However, to experience such love during our entire life is not easy thing. Many people never experience that kind of love before death. That is because they have had wrong definition of love. In spite of the difficulty, many people had tried to find it long ago and we can get several ideas from the outcomes of their endeavor. From these, we came to define the genuine love: The matter of love is deciding to sacrifice ourselves for the lover and the genuine love involves authentic encounter.At first, the matter of love is deciding to sacrifice ourselves and endure pains for the love, not finding a right person who looks lovable and deserves to get our love or not being loved. Erich Fromme of essay “The Art of Loving” says that to the most modern people, loving someone who looks the most lovable might be extremely important. In order to do that, they should also look lovable, because the more lovable they are, the greater possibilities they have in choosing lovable person. They should look lovable in terms of sexual appeal as well as popularity. Especially, to men they have to make an effort to raise their success and to women, to get more beauty. Another essay “Our need for Love, our Desire for status” of Alain de Botton stresses more on economical success. He says that many people think that to get love and attention from people, they need ‘material successes’. This idea can be also apply to Fromme’s essay, since through money men can be social successful and women can be more beautiful by buying accessories and clothes or even getting a plastic surgery. Even more, he says that being loved from others has close relation to self-esteem and a judgement of self. However, gaining attention and being chosen from others drop short of being called love. That is because, even if one man and woman choose each other who can meet their condition, between them the genuine love does not occur without willingness to sacrifice themselves, put up with inconvenience made by the partner, accepting the lover’s drawbacks and get over difficulties for only the lover. If not, it is just to enjoy and consume each other’s beauty for their pleasure. When their beauty is considered as boring things and run out, their relationship became to be ended.Seconly, the genuine love should involve authentic encounter with the lover. When we fall in love with someone, sometimes we try to conceal our weakness and ugliness out of fear of the lover’s leaving from us. In addition, we idealize the lover and do not want to see the lover’s weakness. In the de Beauvoir’s essay “Romantic Love”, she insists that this kind of idealization always happened to women. However, in modern society, it can happen to men and women. Some people recognize the partner as an idol like a flawless God. However, without exposing the aspects of each other, the genuine love cannot be fulfilled. We should encounter the real face of each other. Of course, it could be very painful and difficult. In addition, in the process of knowing the partner’s real face which we can call ‘a tendency toward consciousness’ in the essay “Eros and Psyche” of Erich Neumann, it can cause the feeling of disappointment and distrust for the love. Eros leaves Psyche, after knowing the fact that she intend to see his face with a lamp and kill him if he is monster. He is furious with her distrust behavior. However, to know his identity is necessary for their love. She breaks her situation by herself where they can just enjoy ‘the paradise of uroboric unconsciousness’. Of course, it is not pleasant thing to her. She might feel disappointment if she encounter a monster or small and visible boy who is far from the image which she held previously about him. However, by her courage, she becomes to love Eros truly and ‘she discovers that the separation between beast and husband is not valid’. Also, she comes to move consciousness and get intelligence and self-development. In the process, suffering, pain and separation which they undergo are necessary for these their development. Finally, their love comes to be the genuine love.In conclusion, the genuine love can be characterized as requiring sacrifices oneself for the lover and authentic encounter with each other. To love someone truly is very hard, but it is definitely worthier than any other matters of the world.

To Set a Lunch Time for Student’s HealthMany university students find difficulties with having an enough lunch time in their daily college lives, because their some classes run on at lunch time and are over late such as at three or four. Thus, they have only fifteen or twenty minutes between classes and during the time they can just eat some snacks. Of course, these fatty snacks are not nutritious. Eventually, it will be stressful to them and not good for their health. Therefore, university should set a lunch time in the classes’ schedule when there are no classes. During the lunch period, all students can eat their relaxed lunch.There are several benefits to establish this system. Firstly, if the students eat a square meal for every lunch, they could be healthier. This is because it keeps them from overeating in dinner and from substituting their lunch with poor nutritious and high calories snack. Secondly, it would help to make the class’ atmosphere good and help the students’ focus on the class. That is because due to the hunger, they often feel difficulties to concentrate on the class. Furthermore, from lacking of time even to eat snacks, they sometimes carry them into the classes and eat it during the time. Of course, it became an interruption to keep concentrating on the class for both the students and professors. Finally, in view of cafeteria which exist in the university, running of the cafeteria become more effective. By fixing lunch time, assistants and managers who work in the cafeteria do not have to be ready much of food all the time when the cafeteria opens.However, there could be several objections to operate this system. Some might raise a hare about the system which is that there are not enough spaces in the cafeteria for all students. However, the students can eat their lunch in the cafeteria as well as at restaurants being out of and near the university. There are a plenty of and different restaurants. The price of the foods which they serve is not high and but reasonable. The foods are rather very diverse and nutritious.Another people might say that if all students have their free time at the same time, the school may fall into a big confusion. The campus will be very crowded with a great number of students. It might result in several safety and environmental problems. However, if the students have their basic manner including obeying the school rules, the severe problems will not happen. Even if the campus may look chaotic at first, as time goes by it will became calm down.A final objection may concern that it will be difficult for the school’s officers who make out of classes’ schedule to fix lunch time in the schedule because of the time for lunch which should be set in the middle of the whole class’ time. However, unlike they think, the system will rather make a more regular time schedule of class. Thus, the officers can make out of the schedule more easily.In conclusion, the problem which university students have in a trouble in not eating lunch regularly can be diminished by operating a system which set the lunch time in the class’ schedule. It will be good at the professor whose class’ atmosphere will be better as well as at the students who can be healthier and not be disturbed to keep focus on the class, due to hunger and some snacks. In addition, the cafeteria in the university can be run more effectively.
