So it might be unaccusative. (b)My heart sank, I could change it My heart carefully sank. This case is also problematic. So it’s unaccusative as well. In (c)The students were reading, there are two reasons why it could be unergative. One, it is okay to add the adverb carefully as The students were carefully reading. The other, students are consciously responsible for reading. This sentence does not readily accept progressive marking. So it is state.(e)The music stopped is achievement. The music had already stopped then it could not be interruptible and the music can not consciously stop by itself as has responsibility. It seems like state but it is achievement because it could not be interruptible.(f)He got the joke the second time is achievement. The point is got, it happened punctually. It also has a goal of got. So it is achievement.(g)Khalid played the violin is activity. Khalid played the violin to what?, or for who? It doesn’t have a goal too. The other word, it is atelic and it has one of dynamism. So it might be activity.(a) is accomplishment as it has a goal ‘knowing your lines’. It can be caused again whenever because it is not finished. So it is different of meaning between finished and stopped. (b) is activity as it seems to be no goal. In this case, it has similar meaning between finished and stopped as it means ‘cease’(a)Sprinkle this into peaches; “material” argument.This is flour and spices as direct object here. The activity phase is over when this has been completely used up even if some peaches are left without flour and spices.(b)dust it lightly with flour; locative argumentIt is the bottom of pan as direct object. It has been completely dusted, the goal has been accomplished, even if there is some flour left over.

People were dying early는 담배 때문에 일찍 죽는 사람들을 나타내는데, 진행으로 쓴 이유는 여전히 많은 사람들이 담배를 피기 때문에 죽어가기 때문이다. 문장 화자가 말한 것을 인용한 것이기 때문에 화자가 말했을 때는 People are dying early라고 했지만 의미는 ‘People have been dying early’라고 할 수 있겠다.
